2019 Draft, Pick #30 - Kevin Porter Jr., USC

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
You called us armchair experts, immediately anointed yourself as an expert, then made a point that had already been made. I compared you to a noob, because modelling that type of post seems beneath you as a mod. Your patronizing Merry Christmas says otherwise.

Blocking you so you don't have to worry about my overreactions.
I never anointed myself an expert nor have I ever attempted to moderate outside of the politics forum. If people took my post as moderating, that’s on me, fair enough. I just don’t think that’s the case.

Peace.

My take on the Porter situation: We all make mistakes. The only thing I really care about is the fact that he's talented & he loves playing for this team. He's untouchable in my eyes.

You might be waiting for a bit.
Yikes...

I was thinking it was like a soft, unofficial 4 game suspension.

Are they still gauging where his head and emotions are at and how he is reacting to being held out of games?

I honestly don't know. I just know that the last time I checked in on him I was told that he's not ready yet.

A guy not being ready mentally scares me much more than physically. The mental component is the great unknown and it makes you wonder if the guy will ever be ‘right’ in the head? It’s almost impossible to count on a guy like that.

While I think he’ll more than likely suit up for the Cavs again. I also wouldn’t be totally surprised if he never played another minute for us.

I would be shocked if he never played for the Cavs again.
There are no criminal charges. Once the Cavs end their soft suspension he’ll be back. Hopefully he grew from a 2 cent to 5 cent head.

Nobody was saying this about Kevin Love. I can't help but but see the disconnect between his accolades and then people ready to abandon KPJ. I mean Kevin Love comes out and wins awards talking about anxiety and the whole NBA is behind him. Kevin Loves dad was an NBA player and his uncle is freaking Mike Love from the Beach Boys. Few people are so privileged.

KPJ on the other hand had his dad murdered when he was 4, grew up poor, and got caught up in gang stuff. He was doing really well last year, and then had some rough times during unprecedented times where nobody I know is really themselves and we are all just trying to make it through this thing. Is anyone as happy as can be right now? Do you think anybody is having their PTSD triggered right now? Sam The Bullshit Whisperer said he is the most genuinely nice guy on the team. I just think it is easy to support Love's mental health when he is milquetoast and has already gotten a handle on it. Its riskier to support KPJ.

I mean is this mental health deal just lip service or what? KPJ is super talented and I would take him over half the roster. Is he threatening Cavs employees or starting fights during practice? He seems to like his teammates and vice versa and I was shocked at how unselfish he was on the court. I honestly thought he would be a black hole with his game as so many with iso skills are.

Whatever that was with the security guards, I hope it was an isolated incident. Still, I am not holding anybody's mental stability under a microscope this year, especially a guy who has been through what he did.

This team has a lot of great guys on it, a good leader in JB, and some really good young prospects. I pretty firmly believe KPJ is one of the best ones, and just cutting him loose while paying crying crocodile tears over the stigma of mental illness is not something I want my favorite team to do.

We have Damyean Dotson on the team right now who had credible rape allegations levied against him, but we can't handle KPJ struggling mentally during a pandemic and acting out?

It might be more serious than I know? Maybe his safety or the safety of others is at stake. I don't know. I just think talk of cutting him is premature. He was by all accounts well behaved last year, so I think he deserves some credit for that and should be given a chance to work on himself and make good.

wait, Dotson had what now
My understanding is that Dotsun was cleared.. it definitely hurt his career opportunity, and he has definitely been me clean since..

This is not an either or situation.. Everybody struggles. Everybody.. KPJ has shit to deal with, but maturity is dealing with your own shit without bringing it into other people's lives..

My own take is that KPJ is likely to come around, but I don't disagree with the teams approach. The mental part of the game is fragile, and you don't throw a grenade in the room when you have everybody working together.. Seeing the other guys focused on the goal will underline for KPJ what his choices look like. Better he learn that now, than when he reaches the James Hardin part of his career..

He’ll probably suit up again, I said as much.

However, this is clearly a serious situation, and nothing should surprise you at this point.

Love came out and says he struggles with depression. That is a legit, DSM mental illness. He also performed well on a basketball court for many years. So the mental illness was never used as an excuse/explanation for basketball-related problems. It was really something that, at least as far as fans could tell, was primarily an off-court problem. And again - actual mental illness.

Every defect of character or shitty attitude isn't a mental illness, and KPJ -- unlike Love -- hasn't come out and said he has a mental illness. Nor is this a Delonte situation where that fact has otherwise come out. That's just speculation when it comes to KPJ.

Being immature, lacking impulse control or self discipline, or just being a punk - which could be the case for all we know - doesn't count. Now maybe KPJ actually does have a mental ilness, but unless and until that is actually confirmed, he just looks like someone with a shitty attitude and/or judgement.

In any case, even if he does have an actual mental illness, his job is to be a basketball player. Having a mental illness may mean you deserve sympathy, but it doesn't mean you should keep a job that you can't perform.

I have to agree with this sentiment. People who have severe mental health issues tend to make consistently bad decisions. That's true. But not everyone who makes consistently bad decisions has mental health issues. I have experience with both, and I can't shake the thought that KPJ just needs to grow up some.

I mean, I know he's young... but I'm here to tell you (in my not-so-humble opinion) that mental health issues aren't responsible for shoulder-checking referees and driving around with weed in your mom's car.

Recognizing that distinction in this situation is the difference between knowledge and discernment.
