Week #5 - Baker Bounce Back @ Bolts

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Personally find it hilarious that we've lost a game in which we've put up 42 points and no one is talking about the defense...
I gotchu.

The defense fucking sucked.

He had plenty of time to throw today.

We are having all these off shoot arguments that don’t seem particularly relevant to me.

He’s in a great situation and not even performing at a replacement level.

At some point, it has to be his fault. Maybe we’ll all get there at some point.

Baker Mayfield23/323059.5201-4122.5

Justin Herbert26/433989.3402-17122.0

Two of Hebert's TDs were absolute gifts that any backup QB in the league could make the completion. Hebert also missed his share of throws.

But Baker isn't even replacement level, and Hebert is somehow great?

I think your judgement is skewed.

That was the game right there. We win that game if not for that fucking bullshit call.

That said, our 2 minute offense was the saddest thing I've ever seen. And Stefanski running a draw on 3rd and 10 the possession before was fucking weak.

Just a brutal loss, especially when considering the injuries.
The draw play was ridiculously bad. But the first down run was equally as bad. They had 10 in the box...you need first downs to seal the game. Throw the ball. They couldn't stop Mayfield the whole damn game.

Racking up stats in advantageous situations, when the Browns are in positive down/distance and off play action is very important to any NFL offense and I don't want to take that away from Mayfield. He's done a good job in those scenarios for the most part, perhaps not as great as we'd want, but good enough.

But the fact is Mayfield has just not been a good QB this season when he isn't in an optimal position and that is the one element offensively the Browns really are lacking.

And that is also the very clear separator between Mayfield and the much better QB's in the league.

Herbert wasn't perfect today, he missed some easy throws, but there was never a down and distance where I felt like there was no chance of him converting. I have very little confidence in Baker converting any third and medium to long.

I’ll be honest, this is how I feel as well but I also feel like I’m taking crazy pills in some of these back and forth discussions.

It isn’t that Baker is bad, it is that he very much is a role player at QB. He gets his numbers, 9/10 times, through gameplan and personnel advantage.

But he very much is not a QB that seems capable of doing anything else other than throwing off of boot, PA or some scheme mechanism that gives him a quick, easy throw. Everything else looks painfully bad.

I’m not expecting him to be Mahomes but it is frustrating that he can’t make a handful of throws in opportune moments or against the chains. It puts so much pressure on the offense to always play with a lead.

  • Stefanski blew it
  • Defense was banged up
  • Banged up defense was trash
  • Refs were more trash
  • Baker is not making winning plays right now. He is essentially a role player.
They can all be true!

Liked, except that Baker's a role player. 305 yards passing, 122 QBR. Given the circumstances I'll take that. He didn't come through at the end and was not helped by the playcalling, which you mentioned.

I didn't like the draw call, but Stefanski literally dialed up a pass play on 2nd and 10 and Baker threw an inaccurate pass to Higgins in a perfectly blocked pocket.

Higgins wasn't remarkably open, but Baker didn't even give him a chance on the play.
So that's the exact moment when the head coach is supposed to give up?

What did Baker do wrong "the whole fucking game"? For most of the fucking game, the offense was humming along perfectly.

Unfortunately, Conklin went out right before our defense chose to collapse. So we had two horrible offensive tackles at the precise time we had to throw, and the Chargers knew we had to throw. And we had no time outs. They could absolutely tee off on the pass rush while still keeping 7 guys back.

The Browns were 1-8 on 3rd and 5+ today. The only conversion was on a DPI. That is the main element the offense is lacking. Being able to convert in clear passing situations where the defense won't bite on play action. They just haven't been good enough at that all year.

The Browns are truly great when they have the down and distance advantage. Stefanski can take advantage of all of his offense's tricks and quirks to convert first downs. But when they don't have the advantage, they have been horrible the entire year.

Fuck him and fuck you. If that cocksucker catches an easy 4th down earlier in the game we likely aren’t even having this conversation because the Browns win.
The drop by Beckham was absolutely brutal. This team is markedly better if they just cut his overpaid ass. I'm really sick of watching him over the past 3 seasons.

- No Clowney, Newsome
- Ward leaves early.
- 3rd string LT, rookie RT for half the game
- 15 points on two plays with nobody within 15 yards of the receiver
- dogshit officiating
- 26 4th quarter points given up
- no Chubb at all on the 42-41 possession

sheesh
Did Greedy come back in? I really hope so, but after that tackle on Allen it looked like he might be out for a whiiiiiiile. The way he was gripping his fingers it didn't look good

The defense would have looked a lot better if we played a conventional coach. They forced numerous 4th downs, Staley just didn’t care. Two complete break downs that got punished with monster TDs and an unbelievable screw job by the refs that should have been a turnover on downs.

There are some signs of good things on defense, but ultimately you have to get off the damn field whether that’s 3rd or 4th down. And maybe, just maybe, defend a fucking screen. Any time we are heating up the QB, they can just drop a screen which is a guaranteed 37 yard gain, minimum.

It just seems like the narrative with this unit is always going to be “if everybody was healthy…”. We can’t go two series without a DB getting hurt.

Not to mentioned we are missing Landry which I think was baker's safety blanket for these kind of situation/drive.

I've watched the Cavs lose in heartbreaking fashion so many times for the last decade but man, watching browns football is much tougher. This one will circle on my head for the next few days.

Landry opens up some of the quick slants and RPO stuff that we just can't seem to run with anyone else. With Landry's great hands and good route running, Baker doesn't have to think twice about throwing a quick pass.

I dont know what the Browns do, Mayfield is going to want 35-40 million a year.
I think he's decent but not worth that money.
The drop by Beckham was absolutely brutal. This team is markedly better if they just cut his overpaid ass. I'm really sick of watching him over the past 3 seasons.
Definitely won't be back next year.

right but it's everyone except the Defense fault

Exactly. When it was time to take the fight to them, KS went into a shell, the way he always does any time we have any kind of a lead. KS does not believe in attacking and aggressiveness.

I get being frustrated with the lapses on defense but I think they maybe shouldn't get all the blame considering we had a massacre of injuries on the field?

They killed a few of the Chargers drives throughout the game, really needed the offense to put up points in a timely manner to maintain that lead but it just didn't happen.
