Week #5 - Baker Bounce Back @ Bolts

Do Not Sell My Personal Information

Justin Herbert26/433989.3402-17122.0

Two of Hebert's TDs were absolute gifts that any backup QB in the league could make the completion. Hebert also missed his share of throws.

But Baker isn't even replacement level, and Hebert is somehow great?

I think your judgement is skewed.

It's not about the stats. Watch the game.

Herbert converted SEVEN 3rd/4th and 5+ plays with his arm today. Baker and the Browns converted 1 and it was on DPI.

The Chargers got behind the chains a lot and it didn't matter because Herbert was capable of making plays in the passing game for them regardless of what the down and distance was. The Browns were basically dead if they didn't get ahead of the chains.

That is what separated him from Baker today even though their stats were very similar.

What's being asked is to do what it takes to win the game. Nothing more, and nothing less.

They scored 42 points, he had zero turn overs, and the team effortlessly moved the ball on every drive… except one.

What do we want? A win? Fine. But to expect CONSISTENTLY that we’re going to throw 350+ game in and game out is just reckless.

The Browns were 1-8 on 3rd and 5+ today. The only conversion was on a DPI. That is the main element the offense is lacking. Being able to convert in passing situations. They just haven't been good enough at that all year.

The Browns are truly great when they have the down and distance advantage. Stefanski can take advantage of all of his offenses tricks and quirks to convert first downs. But when they don't have the advantage, they have been horrible the entire year.

Landry.

Let me see their 4th quarter splits

At that point in the game it was clear. If you give the ball back..you lose. SD was giving the game to the Browns by putting 10 in the box and Stefanski was too stupid to figure that out.

Exactly. When it was time to take the fight to them, KS went into a shell, the way he always does any time we have any kind of a lead. KS does not believe in attacking and aggressiveness.

I guess you forgot about... *checks notes*... literally last week when the Browns passed the ball 4 times with under 5 minutes to go and a one-score lead.

I get being frustrated with the lapses on defense but I think they maybe shouldn't get all the blame considering we had a massacre of injuries on the field?

They killed a few of the Chargers drives throughout the game, really needed the offense to put up points in a timely manner to maintain that lead but it just didn't happen.

the offense put up 42 on the road with 0 turnovers and lost by 5 lmao

Here are the plays:

3rd and 14: 9 yard run play to Kareem Hunt
3rd and 10: DPI
3rd and 7: 5 yard pass to Njoku which set up a 4th and 2 which Odell dropped. This was very much a throw that was made knowing it was chipping away at yardage for the 4th down attempt
3rd and 18: 11 yard pass to Hunt.
3rd and 20: incompletion to alligator arms
3rd and 9: 3 yard run from Hunt
3rd and 10: hail mary incompletion

It's easy to just present the numbers, but specifically which of these conversions was Mayfield shitting the bed? This wasn't a bunch of 3rd and 6's here guy

Herbert had receivers getting separation on all of those conversions. Give Mayfield those exact circumstances and he has shown repeatedly that he can make all those throws as well as anyone.

When Mayfield needed to go downfield to win the game, we were keeping receivers in to help block in max protection because of our back-up tackles. The defense was laying back in coverage, receivers were blanketed. I suppose you'd have given him a pass if he threw into double coverage and gotten the ball picked?

Last weeks game was 14-7...no offense. This week it was all offense. To seal the win you throw the ball. Guarantee you Bellichek is throwing in that same situation.

Even if Stefanski doesn’t trust Baker, it makes no sense to go conservative. Nobody in the world watching that game thought the Browns were getting a stop if they punted, so if you turn it over, so what? If anything, it gives you more time to work your final drive.

I take it we’re including the fourth down conversations, considering the Chargers converted 6 total third downs.

What separates Herbert from Baker was punching the ball in three times after unique circumstances- the Hill illegal contact, the “DPI” and 4th and 2 from their own side of the field (before then going for it on 4th and 8).

Baker had a single drive have difficulty. And we completely abandoned any and all hope, and our coach just came out and admitted it post game because of the risk with two back up OTs.

He’s getting an extension because the team is too good to press the restart button. We don’t even HAVE these conversations if we don’t blow two score leads.
