The key to this game was the 21-2 run by the Grizzlies in just under four-and-a-half minutes of the second quarter. The score went from 38-35 Cavs to 56-40 Grizzlies. The Grizzlies had a 12-0 run in two minutes to kick it off. The Cavs kept making runs but could never catch up after that.
That was when we needed some veterans to settle things down and stop the bleeding, or somebody to hit a couple of shots to break the momentum. Garland missed three 3-point shots during that stretch, all within one minute. At the same time, De'Anthony Melton made three 3-point shots, all within one minute. Marky missed a 3-pointer, committed a turnover, and had two shots blocked.
The group on the floor was Mobley, Markkanen, Garland, Sexton, and Osman. Okoro came in for Cedi at 47-38 and Rubio for Sexton at 49-40. That might be a combination that JBB doesn't use again. Garland, Sexton, Markkanen, and Cedi on the floor together means not much defense. If those four are scoring, fine. But Sexton and Cedi never took a shot while Garland missed three 3's in three consecutive possessions and Marky missed three shots. I thought JBB waited too long to get Rubio back in.
Up until that 21-2 run the score was Cavs 38, Grizzlies 35. From the end of that run until halftime it was Cavs 21, Grizzlies 17. The second half score was Cavs 60, Grizzlies 59. That four-and-a-half minutes was the ballgame.
