We can't get outrebounded like that (36-54). We have three 7 footers and Love. Sexton is an underrated rebounder when he tries. We only had seven offensive rebounds. Memphis had 13. Guys are going to miss shots. You need more second chance opportunities than what we got. For as well as Allen played, he only had one offensive rebound.

Sexland played fine together last night. They started the game together and finished it. The problem was the 2nd quarter when it got away from them. Sexton and Garland were not on the court together at that time either.
Sexton and Garland were both in for the first 14 points of Grizzly's 21-2 run, that was the turning point of the game.

2:11 replay, 10:55 Clock 2nd, Markkenen blocks shot, Garland and Sexton are in, Cavs up 36-35
2:20 replay, 10:46 Clock 2nd, Garland assist to Mobley, Sexland in, Cavs 38-35
2:27 replay, 9:38 Clock 2nd, Melton's first 3, Sexland in, Cavs down 38-41
2:39 replay, 9:17 Clock 2nd, Melton's 2nd 3 over shot over Sexton, Sexland in, Cavs 38-44
2:45 replay, 8:45 Clock 2nd, Melton's 3rd 3 shot over Sexton again, Sexland in, Cavs 38-47
2:58 replay, 8:08 Clock 2nd, Adams beats Markkanen and dunks, Sexland still in, Cavs 38-49

Against mobile teams (which is pretty much everyone in this era), Wade & Windler have to play some when they return. Both are significantly more agile than both Love and Mark and are adequate shooters, passers and rebounders. We can't keep giving up 130 points. The thing that bothered me was it was an "easy" 132 - It's not like they were stupid hot or we had a bunch of live ball turnovers. They just came down, ran their offense, and got open shots all night.

Can't help but wonder if JBB kept the hot line up in, whether they could have come back. I can't understand at all why he took Allen out at the end there when he was playing so well.

when your perimeter defense ushers the ball handler to the front of the rim, your big men are out of position for the rebound. Adding to that is that 1 Steve Adams is like a Mobley and a half in terms of space eaten up in the lane.
I think if you are going to play the 3 7' guys together, you need Okoro out there to give some semblance of perimeter defense.
We will see how it goes but there isn't really a night off in the near future for the defense.. all these teams have G's who can get into the lane on even good defenders. So you need to have a few guys who can half slow them down/force them into the help and rotate correctly and quickly to allow for you to contest/rebound and get into transition.
Can't give up 70 points in a half.. or 60+ for that matter.

Honestly, giving up 60-70 pts in a half is just the norm for the NBA now. It's really not an extraordinary feat that it used to be.

Cavs have new players but until they get some guards who actually play defense and a legit SF , they're going to continue to have huge problems.

I'm specifically talking about offensive rebounds for a reason here. You should have more than seven second chance opportunities if you're starting three 7 footers and have Love off the bench. Allen having to do too much defensively explains why the Cavs are giving up too many offensive rebounds. It doesn't explain why they're getting so few themselves.

From what I saw, they were hardly crashing the glass

Mobley had zero offensive rebounds, Allen had one, and Luari had two. That'll get you killed against a running team. Maybe Mobley can get back in transition, but the other two really can't.

The perimeter defense ushers the ball handler to the big men. The big men just weren't there for much of the game yesterday. Since they weren't cutting off the ball handler, there weren't many rebounds to be had on made layups.

Despite being 0-2 so early in the year, I think the Cavs are in a good place. They haven't been horrifically blown out and even kept it competitive late into games against two very hungry teams that are in the 8-10 seed range (where I expect us to be in about two years). Its a long season but the early signs overall seem promising. If we can figure out how to get an actual wing or two without costing too much of the other core guys, the Cavs could be a play in team as soon as next year.
