2021 Around MLB: Return of the Dead Ball Era

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Everything in baseball evolves.

Pitching is no exception.

The Rays have managed to be very successful with Cash's unorthodox use of his pitching staff. He's also been very fortunate.

He uses between 30 and 35 pitchers in a season, which plays havoc with his 40 man. Imagine if ten teams were using that many pitchers every year. 325 pitchers per season for only one third of the teams.

It would be interesting to see. Some pitchers might play for five or six clubs in a season.

Maybe they could schedule themselves.

Hello? No, I'm booked next week. But I have openings for Wed and Thurs the week after, but I have to pitch in LA over the weekend.

OK...Wed and Thurs two weeks from now. But I can only give you two innings. I promised the Angels that I'd give them five over that weekend.

If you are looking for a longer booking, my calendar is pretty much open in August. I offer a discount for anything over a week.

Or maybe an enterprising young agent could open a temp agency for pitchers. Instead of Mancan, he could call it Armcan.

It's crazy how a team like the Dodgers continuously chokes in the playoffs despite seemingly overwhelming talent. It's like they are the new Nationals. Or maybe there is something about Max Scherzer teams continually choking. Dunno.

Baseball is just the most unpredictable sport. Even with overwhelming talent, they lost a third of their regular season games. Over a 7 game series, anything can truly happen to anyone.

I dont really like the term 'choke' when we are talking about playoff baseball. One player gets hot (Eddie Rosario), and a series changes. It happens almost every year...often in multiple series at the same time.

But the regular season is a different story. The 1964 Phillies choked. Up by 6.5 games with ten to go...and lose all ten.

Thats choking.

To win the regular season you had to be the best team over 154 or 162 games. Today, you have to be good enough to qualify for the post season.

But in a playoff series, its the hot team...not the best...that usually wins. And the hot team only needs one or two players to change the dynamics of a series.

The Dodgers were favored over the Braves, because they have the best players. But if you knew that Eddie Rosario would collect 14 hits in the series, Atlanta would have been favored.

Such things happen in baseball...and it has more to do with Eddie than the Dodgers.

Try - has to do with the Dodger pitchers not knowing how to adjust, and do it quickly enough.

Eddie is a guess hitter. Toughest type to get out when they get hot. But you just have adjust and keep them off balance

Thats part of the difference between 162 games and a short series. Adjustment times disappear.

Not always true on the time to adjust

Just this year, Kike was hot as snot until the Astros decided to start running the ball up and in on him. And you saw every Astro pitcher from that point forward do the same. High and hard. Pounded him up and in and the results (for him) changed quickly

Got to mess with an AZL ball the other night. The bullpen guys were telling me about the "salt solution" being used for tack. Didn't get to throw it off a mound or anything to see what it felt like in action - but MLB is clearly getting closer to having a "sticky ball" for use

But Kike is not Eddie.

Eddie is a guess hitter who can hit any and everything when he is hot.

Pitching to him isn't like pitching to Vlad, sr.... but when he's hot, its close.
