Early 22 GM Thread! (Trade Ideas here)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I know a lot of folks like Ernie, I do too. But our 40 man is going to have how many MIFs on it?? On paper Chang beats him out IMO. Not to mention Arias or even Palacios ( 2B only) oh and Jones as a 3rd baseman.. Then there is Tyler Freeman and Bryan Rocchio.... He has a lot of folks who have or will beat him out IMO.

Edit. I spaced on Owen Miller, that's how many players we have.

So long Ernie, so long DJ.
Ok. That option would work. IF the 60 man was available to use I had no issue with your original plan.

I see CHiCubs utility guy David Bote is out 6 months due to shoulder surgery. Perhaps Ernie can be added to the Tena/ Gaddis package to complete the Happ deal & open up a 40 man spot for future usage...

I can see Lorenzen signing after pitchers and catchers report and guys can be added to the 60. Could save DJ in that case.

Cleveland doesn’t need a reliever all that bad, but I do think they need another experienced guy back there like Shaw this previous season. Going to be even more youth pitching wise from top to bottom in 22.

I want to keep Clement... I wouldn't be surprised if Francona thinks the same way...

Too much clutter to keep Ernie.

Miller is essentially the same player. Freeman, Rocchio, Arias, Palacios, all guys with multiple position capabilities will all be on the 40 man.

Lot of redundancy, and you can’t keep everyone.

Alright, I have some free time this morning before meetings. Here is what I would do, nothing rumor related all opinion:

DFA HRam, Young, Moss, Nelson, protect Valera, Freeman, Rocchio, Lavastida, Palacios, Morris, Cantillo, Pilkington

Trade for Ian Happ prior to Rule 5 cutoff (think a package of Tena and mid-level pitcher like Gattis could get it done, or close to done) - 6.5 million is his projected arb salary

DFA or trade Zimmer if that move happens

Sign Mark Canha 2/22

Sign Yan Gomes 1/6.5

DFA Garza and trade/DFA Clement after those moves (hat tip to Mad for catching this)

Sign Michael Lorenzen after pitchers and catchers report 1/3 with a team option for 23

Move Vargas and Naylor to the 60 day to free up a space for Lorenzen.

Lineup:

Straw CF
Canha RF
Ramirez 3B
Reyes DH
Happ LF
Bradley 1B
Rosario 2B
Gomes C
Gimenez SS

Mercado, Hedges, Chang, Miller bench

Rotation:

Bieber
Civale
Plesac
Quantrill
McKenzie

Bullpen:

Clase
Karinchak
Sandlin
Stephan
Hentges
Mejia
Lorenzen
Gose

I look to trade Logan Allen before setting rosters if Hentges or Mejia aren't granted an extra option due to the non-existent minors season in 2020.

Nothing crazy, but I think that team is considerably better than 21s team. Could potentially be a very deep lineup as well if you see progression from Bradley, Rosario, Gimenez, Chang, and Miller.
I was actually putting together something similar last night and here's what I have:

DFA/Trade for peanuts: Pitchers: Logan Allen, JC Mejia, Scott Moss, Kyle Nelson, Alex Young
Hitters: Ernie Clement, Bradley Zimmer, Harold Ramirez

R5 Protected: Brayan Rocchio, George Valera, Tyler Freeman, Richie Palacios, Steven Kwan, Bryan Lavastida, Joey Cantillo, Cody Morris, Konnor Pilkington,

Trade: Gabriel Arias, Daniel Johnson, Tanner Burns and Jose Tena for Jesse Winker and Luis Cessa

Sign: Andrew McCutchen at $7 million for one year with Club Option for 2023
Yan Gomes at $6 million for one year with Player Option for 2023
Lineup
  • Myles Straw (CF)
  • Jesse Winker (LF)
  • Jose Ramirez (3B)
  • Franmil Reyes (DH)
  • Andrew McCutchen (RF)
  • Amed Rosario (SS)
  • Bobby Bradley (1B)
  • Yan Gomes (C)
  • Andres Gimenez (2B)
  • Starting Rotation
    • Shane Bieber
    • Aaron Civale
    • Zach Plesac
    • Cal Quantrill
    • Triston McKenzie
  • Bullpen:
    • Emmanuel Clase
    • James Karinchak
    • Nick Sandlin
    • Anthony Gose
    • Luis Cessa
    • Trevor Stephan
    • Sam Hentges
    • Spring Training invite who makes the team
  • Remaining 40 Man Roster:
    • Pitchers:
      • Eli Morgan, Carlos Vargas, Joey Cantillo, Cody Morris, Konnor Pilkington, Justin Garza
  • Hitters:
    • Josh Naylor, Nolan Jones, Richie Palacios, Steven Kwan, Tyler Freeman, George Valera, Brayan Rocchio, Bryan Lavastida
(A reliever from outside the organization is added to the 40 man roster if/when Josh Naylor is placed back on the 60 Day IL.)

@Kevalier

Good breakdown, but expect them to throw Vargas (along with the aforementioned Naylor) back on the 60 day as soon as they possibly can

A modication to a Tampa Bay fan's trade for Jose Ramirez has been discussed a bit.. after modifications w/ some other teams involved, the result would be:

The Guardians sacrifice Zack Plesac and Jose Ramirez
The Guardians receive: Austin Meadows (ML OF'er), Vidal Brujan (ML OF'er/MIF'er), Shea Langeliers (MiLB C; 2022) Kyle Wright (ML SP/RP), Bobby Miller (MiLB SP; 2022) and Andy Pages (MiLB OF'er; 2023)

Discussion: Meadows and Brujan make up a brand new, more than capable corner OF tandem, something the Guardians lack. Shea Langeliers is only behind Adley Rutschman and perhaps Joey Bart w/r to being a complete catching prospect and is slated to be ready sometime in 2022. Kyle Wright pitched very well out of the Braves bullpen in the playoffs (two game, almost six inning 1.6 ERA with a strike out per inning. He has a lot more to offer than he's shown, so, he could be a helluva change of scenery kind of pitcher. Bobby Miller is a flat out stud RHSP. He may not be ready on April 1st (service time manipulation) but, he's going to be the equal or better of any pitching prospect the Guardians currently have in their system.. including Daniel Espino. Andy Pages is a future prospect OF'er that has some ability. He won't be ready for a major league opportunity until 2023.. at the earliest..

So, the Guardians are able to compete now and into the future.. and they'd save a few scheckels while they're at it..

Thoughts?..

Can we fit all of them on the 40 man? Lol

So who are we cutting to get all those players?
Making space for talent is a joy.. keeping space for guys who can't make the HARDEST JUMP UP IN PERFORMANCE IN ALL OF SPORTS is easy.. Logan Allen, Alex Young, Harold Ramirez and Daniel Johnson... There are six to eight others, if needed.. Those are my bottom four..

There could also be a throw in or two in the Plesac deal.. but, the same four should be cut, anyway.. perhaps there IS a Rule V guy from another club that might be worth taking, but, like most Rule V guys.. probably not worth the time and effort save for exigent circumstances that the Guardians would be willing to over look.. however doubtful that is..

If the FO does as Bimbo suggests....which IMO is close to spot on, although the names of an acquisition or two may be changed...our 40 man would probably consist of....

Freeman
Rocchio
Valera
Lavastida
Palacios
Noel

Morgan
Vargas
Cantilla
Morris
Pilkington

Jones
Arias
Naylor

In addition to his active roster.

That works, and the 2022 Guardians would be much improved, without decimating the prospect list.

If Happ could be acquired for Tena, Gaddis, +, he would move higher on my shopping list.

I think the payroll would end up around $5 mil higher than budgeted in this thread, but close enough to be in reach. And we hit every off season target.

Two corner OFs bats, without sacrificing much defense.
Back up plan/RH platoon bat for 1B.
More offense from our catchers, without sacrificing much defense.
Veteran reliever.
Protect nearly every prospect.
Retain our rotational depth.

The only negative is that it leaves us with no bullpen depth. We'd have only eight relievers on the 40 man....only 18 total pitchers, and Vargas can't be considered for 2022.

I'm not sure the FO will consider beginning a season with only 17 available pitchers on the 40 man.
