Cleveland Guardians Offseason Discussion 2021-22

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Hard to discuss possibilities when they all remain. I do think the least likely is Jones at 3B. If Jose is traded then I'd guess they view Arias as the heir apparent. I've long thought that Jones would be a damn fine 1B, but I've been convinced that RF is also a real possibility and that would make the best use of his strong arm.

I wouldn't limit Jones' promotion to the 2nd half of the season. I also wouldn't expect him to contribute by then. If he's hitting then get him up here. If he's unimpressive in Columbus then leave him there. Can't know until we know.........ya know.
I figure we'll just end up with some combination of Gimenez/Arias/Rocchio/Freeman/Tena? up the middle, with 3B a little more open unless we're able to extend Jose. But it actually seems kind of unlikely to me that all of these will stay with the team and be good.

If from the many MI options you can find anything close to Lindor and Ramirez then all is great even if most of them turn out more like Michael Martinez.

Hard to say how good they will be, but I feel confident that the 5 you listed will end up decent at least. I'd include Miller in there as well.

Of that list I think Arias is the most likely to disappoint, but he also has the upside to be the biggest offensive threat. He's a bigger kid and could outgrow SS. Fantastic glove and arm though.

As it stands right now with me, I hope Gimenez has a breakout season for a couple of reasons. It either makes one of those highly rated prospects available or one of those prospects pushes him out the door. Either way it's good when value is created.

So it looks like the DH will be universal whenever the lockout ends. That doesn't seem to help Cleveland in their search for big corner OF bats. Does it change the strategy or not?

Just took a look at the remaining free agent catchers.. Not looking good at all, Luke Maile anyone?
Not making a play for Yan Gomes is very disappointing. Gaurdins couldn't afford 13 million over 2 years?

The complete inactivity so far is mind boggling especially given the publicity nightmare they will be dealing with with the name change. Not to mention the high likelyhood of a delayed start to this season. Arbitration will increase the payroll somewhat but right now, the payroll sits at a paltry 31 million. There's no reason for that.

Amen, dude.

I've seen many Cleveland baseball bloggers shriek about the "fiscal irresponsibility" of giving $13 million to an above-average hitting catcher who is fantastic with a pitching staff. The alternative is an Austin Hedges/Sandy Leon pairing, which produced a 40 WRC+ and 42 WRC+ respectively.

If the organization is planning on just adding a fringe FA OF to the roster (Joc Pederson type), then what is the point of keeping JRam, especially if they won't extend him? It would make more sense then to trade him for a haul of blue-chip prospects whose timelines match up with Rocchio, Valera and Freeman.

Do we know they DIDN'T make a play for Yan?
I certainly have zero inside information on anything related to the team...or anything in life overall for that matter...but wouldn't Yan have chosen to come back to Cleveland if they offered him a similar deal to the Cubs? He seems to have loved his time in Cleveland, so I imagine there was real interest on his end to return.

The forced, rehearsed "outrage" about a lack of activity in free agency is boring and unoriginal.
A likely mid-February return for baseball is seeming really far away...

Your tradition of shilling and browbeating fans who don't want their team mired in austerity is boring and unoriginal.

If they did, to and he chose a rebuilding team in Chi, cc what does that say?
A rebuilding team that just tossed a ton of money at Marcus Stroman. I wonder how serious they are about a 'rebuild' and are just trying to retool.... Combine that with our likely lack of desire to pay a catcher pair $13m a year.....and there we go.

The team continuously competes, and had they stayed healthy, would have last year as well.

Spend more money and compete aren’t mutually exclusive.
Every team has devastating injuries. The 2021 World Series champions lost their best player, yet still went on a run in part because ownership bankrolled AA's aggressive deadline acquisitions--Soler, Rosario, Duvall and Joc.

Spending $ doesn't equate to success, but rolling out a $50 million payroll really narrows a team's margin for error.
