Cleveland Guardians Offseason Discussion 2021-22

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Based off a quick look, it seems like Happ is the better rated defensive player, while they're somewhat comparable offensively. Offensively you have some difference with Happ with more OBP, Renfroe with more power. I think more importantly, Renfroe is coming off a much better year so we might expect to see that continue. Both are free agents in 2024.

Yeah, I'm not sure what to think about this one but I hope we at least did our due diligence.
Trust me when I say that Renfroe is a much better defensive OFer. Like I said, had we acquired Happ, Renfroe, and a C then I would be pleased.

If we do not add a ML OFer (which would be madness) Palacios makes the opening day roster IMO.
Yeah I think if we add none, at the very minimum one of Kwan and Palacios make it, with possibility of both of them. I agree that it'd be madness though.

Good point about Kwan not seeming to have split issues. That does bring up a few hypothetical situations, though obviously it is difficult to put anything on his shoulders now.

Some things could very well get decided in Spring Training, as much of a meme as it may seem like.

Based on what do you say this?

Renfroe's OF profile seems to be - okay range, strong arm, and error prone. In totality about a slightly below average MLB RF.

Happ's OF seems to amount to a slightly above average MLB LF, and below average CF and RF, but can also play other positions. The fact that he can play 2B though, seems like something that would be appealing to other teams and increase his asking price. We do not need someone who can "also play 2B". Richie Palacios can also play 2B. So can all our wealth of infielders.

I guess it really depends on where we want them to play. I'd rather Happ to play LF and Renfroe to play RF. Renfroe fits our needs (mashes lefties and can play OF) while Happ provides things (switch hitter, who can play 2B) which I would not want to pay a premium for.

Don't forget that Jones spent all of last season in Columbus. If he's is hitting out of the gate then there's your RFer going forward. Gotta think that they don't want to block him either until they know more.

As far as Palacios, his versatility could come in handy for him. I'd look to trade Amed if a good offer is made. Gimenez can slide over to SS where he belongs and Palacios and Miller can battle it out for 2B. That or Miller can be our utility player if he continues to hit like he did at the end of the season.

Agree with the bolded sentence, but if I had to choose I'm taking Renfroe.

With the Cubs signing Stroman, I am beginning to think Contreras and possibly/likely Happ are off the table now anyway.

Unfortunately I agree with you. Seemed like an inevitable match for a minute though.

In this scenario, I think Chang would get 1st crack at 2B and have to battle it out with Miller before they moved Richie back.

You could be right, but I think they move on from Chang as soon as one of those I mentioned claims it. There is the outside chance he does, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

RE: Jones, maybe in the future but what is the chance that we really want to put him in the OF before at least midseason 2022?

His positional future is also very dependent on the possibility of extending Jose. If we think we can, he will continue to get reps in RF and maybe 1B. In limbo, probably stays at RF and 3B. If we trade Jose (probably earliest would be midseason 2022) perhaps the OF experiment ends.

If you look at Chang and Ahmed's splits they should really be platooned at 2B with Chang still performing utility duties versus lefties.

Just took a look at the remaining free agent catchers.. Not looking good at all, Luke Maile anyone?

Hard to discuss possibilities when they all remain. I do think the least likely is Jones at 3B. If Jose is traded then I'd guess they view Arias as the heir apparent. I've long thought that Jones would be a damn fine 1B, but I've been convinced that RF is also a real possibility and that would make the best use of his strong arm.

I wouldn't limit Jones' promotion to the 2nd half of the season. I also wouldn't expect him to contribute by then. If he's hitting then get him up here. If he's unimpressive in Columbus then leave him there. Can't know until we know.........ya know.

This is how Roberto Perez got paid...
Someone asked if I would really feel better with Hedges/Perez vs Hedges/Leon. At this point, YES! Even though, Perez and Hedges have injury history, odds are one or both would be healthy to take majority of games with Leon being backup when needed.

If Hedges gets a concussion at beginning of season, we now only have Leon and who? Ramos? Collins/Rivera? Would they rush Naylor who couldnt hit last year (his calling card) or Lavastida who only caught 120 gms in minors so far?

Still time for something like Suzuki or a trade but as others say, its hard to find that trading partner ... where you have what the other needs.

So, yes, I would have kept Perez and his bloated contract at $7 mill ... due to tight market at premium position. And, it aint my money anyways.
