The "What are you playing now?" Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Largely took a break from Elden Ring this week, as I was out of town, but still managed to clear the Academy of Raya Lucaria.

I'm running a spell sword (started with the prisoner class), so mainly focusing on leveling Int/Vigor, while secondarily leveling Mind/Dex. It was a little tough to start with, but it's been a blast. Normally I run as a mage, but wanted to try something a little different.
Ha, I started as a Mage (Astrologer class) but once I got into the Academy, began shifting to a spell sword by necessity (trying to fight the sorcerer casters with casting was very difficult). Moving forward I plan on using both spell swords and casting depending on what the situation calls for. The versatility seems to be paying dividends so far.

Basically, following this build as a general guideline:

It pays to leave good or funny messages in this game. Every time someone appraises your message, you get healed. It's randomly saved my ass twice now.

Finished up Stormveil Castle tonight. For the most part, it wasn't too tough. There are a couple of knight enemies that hit pretty damn hard and are fast as hell, but the bulk of the enemies are weaker types and only dangerous when they get the drop on you or you let yourself get outnumbered.

The toughest part was near the end when you have to fight your way through over a dozen enemies to get to the second-to-last grace site before the Godrick fight. By the time I'd gotten to the last enemy, a big fucker who was surprisingly quick on his feet, I was out of mana and didn't have any charges left in my health flask, so trying to face off against him in a melee battle was almost sure to end in my death.

I hid for a bit until his aggro went away and crafted some fire pots, and then proceeded to bait him in, hit him with a couple of pots, crafted more, and repeated the process until he was dead. I ran into one more regular enemy who got the drop on me and got me down to a small chunk of health, but I survived. Right around the corner was that second-to-last grace site. That was a harrowing fight, especially with that last guy when one more hit would have had me doing the whole segment over, and probably rage-quitting for an hour or two.

Instead, I made it to Godrick. I accidentally forgot to summon the chick to help fight him because I just was on autopilot, but it didn't end up mattering. After Margit, Godrick seemed like a bit of a pushover. It might be because I've invested a few more points into my health, but I can survive a lot of shots that would have been one hit kills before, and that's made big fights a lot easier. Tank one hit, run away, heal up, and keep chipping away at the health bar.

The part where he grafts the dragon head onto his hand was awesome, and made for a fun second half of the fight where I was constantly dodging fire attacks. I'd just killed the dragon in the lake near where the game starts earlier today, so that made it a little easier.

After the fight, I eventually tracked down the place to activate the rune that Godrick dropped, but goddamn it was a fight to get there. I nope'd the fuck out of fighting that lion enemy, but the fight just to get to him was crazy. I just ran past the lion and found another site of grace to heal up at.

I figured by then I might be out of the woods, but nope. Three giant sentinel robot things popped up to fuck up my day. I figured out that the giant archer was hitting the other two, so then it was just a matter of keeping my distance (those jerks have some insane range on their attacks) and lining up the guy's shot so he hit his friends and getting in attacks when I got a window. Once the melee guys were both down, the archer was easy mode. That fight was tough, though, and a lot of fun.

Onward to the lakes. Tomorrow.

Loving this game. The sheer amount of enemy designs is incredible, and I've only seen a fraction of what the game has to offer so far.

What platforms are you guys using for Elden Ring? And if you're doing PC, what are your main specs? Thanks.

Considering buying a new laptop next month, and trying to figure out if it makes sense to as an ER platform or no.

Xbox Series X

Might want to do some research on the PC version, on release day I read that it had a handful of performance issues

Yeah, my son had me get it the PC version for him, then he found out his PC wasn't good enough, and also heard about problems with the PC version. But depending on patches, etc., it might end up being okay. I have some time before I have to make a decision on the laptop specs.

I'm playing on PS4, as I don't have a next-gen console and my PC isn't good enough to run this shit. Game looks really good and runs well enough. Occasional frame drops but I don't think I've been killed due to one yet.

Spent about two hours exploring Liurnia of the Lakes earlier. Mostly I was just looking for sites of grace to activate to make my life easier in the future, along with collecting the map fragments to reveal the region's details on my map and checking out a few of the ruins in the area.

I also killed a dragon who was apparently guarding the key I needed to get into the Academy, so bonus! The dragon was a bit tougher than the one near the starting point, or at least he had a lot more health, but with those regen beetles around to replenish my flasks, it was just a battle of attrition, dodging attacks and chipping away at him and keeping my health up so he couldn't one-shot me. The Rock Sling spell was pretty effective at taking chunks off of him, but it was easy to miss because he would often take flight right after I cast the spell, leaving the rocks to fall without connecting on their mark.

Wrapped up when I made it to the Academy. Feels crazy how little of the game I've seen despite playing it a ton already.

I was talking with a friend about this today, honestly each region feels like it's its own game. It's just incredible.

What really blows my mind is the diversity in enemy design. I was just playing Gears 5 and Halo Infinite and there are like eight to ten different enemies in those entire games. You run into about four times that in Limgrave alone in Elden Ring and there are like eight to ten more areas in the game.

FromSoft games have the best enemy/boss design in the industry, and I won't be convinced otherwise.

They do have a bit of an advantage because all of their games take place in nightmare worlds with no real logic to them where creatures can take on absolutely hellacious forms.

I can tell I’m getting a little better at Elden Ring because I no longer panic whenever I get ambushed and start spamming roll. Now about half the time I actually remember I have a shield. :chuckle:

I was reading a bit about how Horizon: Forbidden West basically found itself completely overshadowed by Elden Ring and the article noted that the original Horizon launched three days before Breath of the Wild. Jesus.

These fools need to time their releases better.
