Cleveland Guardians Offseason Discussion 2021-22

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Straw is hitting .348, Franmil is hitting .333, Chang is hitting .409, Clement is hitting .526, Hedges is hitting .300.

Not sure what your point is, they've struggled tonight but in general, the Guards have been one of the absolute hottest offensive teams this spring.

Chang hitting .400+ means as much as Jose hitting sub-.200.
Now let's see how they do against real pitchers.

I think the only time ST stats matter is if they are inline with the history of that player. Meaning Bradley Zimmer couldn't hit a barn standing inside of it the last couple of years and so far this spring that remains to be true. He may have gotten worse. Pitchers aren't ramped up. They aren't using their full arsenals. It's tougher to spin the ball in the desert and so on. That's my take anyway.

Spring Training stats don’t matter literally at all.

The only player who’s ST results I’ve been interested in is Naylor because he’s coming back from an injury.

Team lit up Brandon Woodruff the other day who’s a legit Cy Young guy. I’m sure they’ve been shut down at least once by some guy we’ve never heard of.

That’s baseball.

I really don’t think it tells us anything at all. It’s certainly more fun to see us do well in spring training, but past experience tells me that the results are meaningless.

I’m just not that impressed with any of the guys that were added. As for the young guys taking off, couldn’t you say the same about our own up and comers?
Uhhhhh no, not at this time and how you don't think those players I named vastly improve their teams is dumbfounding to me. I love your optimism, but I don't share it. We don't have a Torkelson, Vaughn, Burger, Greene, or a Kirillof close to ready either. Unfortunately, ours are a little further off Derek.

We’re pretty much all in agreement on this.

It was just odd that you provided tonight’s game as evidence of something.
I never said it was "evidence" of anything. So you can go keep finding it odd as you imagine how terrible it is that I did something that I didn't.

I described a fear I have which you have as well, and tonight is how that fear would look played out.

Shelled is strong language. They hit HRs when they weren't busy striking out.

Listen, I get the frustration of a bad offensive night like tonight but I'm not going to act like they didn't just score 6 runs off an elite pitcher yesterday either.

I agree, they mean nothing at all except for those who continue to perform as they have. It's not an indicator of coming failure or outstanding performance. If you've always hit like shit and you hit like shit in ST, that probably helps confirm that you're a shitty hitter. It's more of the same.

You literally did though…
Guardians face good pitchers with the Dodgers. What happens? 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 10 K.

IMO this is going to be the real reality check for a lot of their hitters which don't exactly have great approaches. Sure they might look good in Spring Training but what will happen in the bigs?
Whatever, I’ll just go back to ignoring this part of the board outside of Bimbo’s posts.

My bad.

It's not about the frustration of a bad offensive night. It's about the frustration of a bad offensive team, which got a fluky outcome in 6 runs against a pitcher who still was mostly dominant against them. Maybe it will take watching the team actually play during the regular season to make the hopium wear off.

The evidence is all of 2021 and even further back for a lot of these players.

Today is just a continuation of a trend.

I can't imagine hate-watching my own team but to each his own. Have a good night!

I’m not all that interested in this conversation. Neither of us is changing our mind regardless of how condescending we are to one another.

I stand by my original point. We won 80 games last year with everything going wrong and didn’t get worse at any position. Even if the central is slightly improved, projecting 74 wins isn’t something I understand.

You ever watch Super Troopers II? You remind me of Thorny when he was taking female hormones. I wasn't being condescending at all, I didn't call you a homer, KS isn't trolling. I respect your opinion and wanted to know your reasoning.

Edited to clarify that this surprises me Derek. I don't recall any rift between us at all and I'm curious as to why you're being so easily offended and quick to accuse. I've always appreciated your input and opinion and I certainly respect it. If I'm asking you to clarify something it isn't being condescending, it's having genuine interest in your thoughts behind the matter.
