Cleveland Guardians Offseason Discussion 2021-22

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I’m not all that interested in this conversation. Neither of us is changing our mind regardless of how condescending we are to one another.

I stand by my original point. We won 80 games last year with everything going wrong and didn’t get worse at any position. Even if the central is slightly improved, projecting 74 wins isn’t something I understand.
The only way it can make sense is if they are valuing the other teams in our division improving so much that it essentially takes wins away from us.

I can't imagine hate-watching my own team but to each his own. Have a good night!
Is it hate watching when you're being realistic, or can you only watch your favorite team if you think they are going to win it all? Asking for a friend.

I know I'm going to watch them every chance I get and I don't think they're close to being a .500 team right now.

Yes, thank you. I thought that was evident. I also find it puzzling how someone can think that all of CHI, DET, and MIN are not going to be better. I just wanted to know the reasoning behind it and "I’m just not that impressed with any of the guys that were added" raises some questions to the average MLB onlooker.

Edited to state the obvious that we haven't exactly improved our lineup. Some of these young kids could perform quite well, but none of them have real high upsides. Take Kwan for instance. I expect him to hit the ball well and play very good defense in LF, but he's no big run producer. His play will improve us in a small increment should he continue his success. That's a good thing for sure, but not on the same level as Correa or Baez or Sanchez etc. We ran into this dilemma in 19 too. Many folks said that Minnesota didn't have the SP to take the division from us. I expressed my concern with their offense because it was absolutely stacked. Thing is ours wasn't as bad as it is now so I think the margin has widened until some of our young sluggers find their way.

Are you trolling right now?

They got him for 6 runs and 7 hits in 3.2 IP. That’s getting shelled.
Maybe I should've been clearer.

The verb "shelled" to me implies the team actively did something skill-based to achieve the outcome which could be replicated in some sense with a similar state of mind against a similar opposition.

But I guess that's just how the word plays out in my head. And I think the likelihood is high that most of what happened was luck (i.e. when they did hit the ball, it hit the right part of their bat, even though it isn't likely to). He struck out about 30% of Guardians hitters yesterday, he struck out about 30% of MLB hitters during the regular season... This does not feel like it was easy mode for them.

I guess it's not fun to look at games as probabilistic luck fests though.

I'm not sure where the hate is, but okay.

I actually look forward to see many careers really progress next year on a team of mostly young kids. But I don't have to hold a delusion in order to enjoy that. Actually setting expectations too high will probably just lead to disappointment...

The evidence is all of 2021 and even further back for a lot of these players.

Today is just a continuation of a trend.

Weren't we one of the better teams in the second half of the second when it came to hitting...

Ok, I just don’t think the moves they made account for much improvement.

Just because I disagree doesn’t make it a homer take.
I wanna agree. but if we added Correa.... (that was never going to happen - maybe, see Story) would we act like it wasn't that much of a needle pusher...

Odds are the Twins aren't done adding and end up with Monaea and/or Montas... Plus Conforto is still out there lurking...

Didn't get worse??

feel free to expand on that... this is where you should be a homer actually...

We have a short memory.. Rosario (Eddie not Amed) and Naylor in the corners with Luplow platooning the shit out of everybody looked damn good on paper...

You say everything going wrong..... That is homer-ism man.

I really like you posting Derek and sorry if you feel I am attacking you, but you post some of the most homer-istic shit on this board. I hope that means you're an optimist, am i just a stupid cynic... I want you to be right......

I know some of us "new guys" crammed on in when our bubble burst, and upset your world.... It is just a game and I LOVE opinions.... Don't speak for others, don't lump us together and we can all have a fun season...

Going by your stat, first half of the season they had a 89 wRC+ and second half 97 wRC+

First half .229/.298/.398
Second half .248/.309/.415

BABIP- 1st .270, 2nd -.296

wOBA- 1st .301, 2nd .312

oWAR 1st -39.9, 2nd -4.1

WAR 1st, 6.2, 2nd 9.6

From what I see, is the fact we got better in the second half of the season and we likely are only going to improve from there in 22... I mean we were what 16-19th in about every stat, while first half we were 19th-22nd...Don't get me wrong it's not a major improvement, but we honestly did get better in the second half...

I believe we will be better in 22, which I believe we can get into the top 15 if not higher in baseball stats wise as a team on offense.

I wish I shared your optimism. I think we'll be toward the bottom of the league offensively.......again.

On a positive note, it looks like our pitching is healthy(knock on wood) and deeper than it's been since I can remember. These are all homegrown guys too. Now we just need the position players to catch up. Only way to do that is to give them experience, and that's exactly what they're going to do. The problem right now is that guys like Jones, Valera, and Noel aren't quite ready. If it were me I would shitcan Zimmer and give his roster spot to OGon and throw him to the wolves. Sink or swim baby! If he swims then we have ourselves the type of bat that can impact the outcome of a game with one swing. If he sinks then he gets DFA'd and is out of the way. What exactly are we out other than Zimmer?

This is just flat ridiculous logic.

If they get shut down by a pitcher in spring training..

They stink.

If they knock a pitcher around..

It is a high likelihood that the team did not do anything skill based or anything that could be replicated somewhat in a similar circumstance against a similar opponent the reality is that likely when the guardians swung their bats the ball hit just the right piece of lumber by luck despite it not being likely to do that.

Give me a break.

Thing is, I don't think "we didn't get worse" is an outlandish statement. Actually, that's an understandable statement, but conversely we didn't get better either while the other 4 teams did. We have exactly 2 hitters(for now) that garner pitchers' respect. If any team throws to them in a close game then they should get kicked squarely in the sack because it would be stupid. If I'm managing the team playing us, my advice to the pitchers would be "do not let JRam or Reyes beat us". This doesn't make me a hater or a cynic. More like a realist that would love nothing more than to be wrong.

I will say that drafting a bazillion MIFers as a strategy sucks balls IMO. Now they're like ants and we still don't have any corner bats ready to step up. The entire theory that they could be used all over the diamond doesn't look ideal to me. We should be solid as hell up the middle though and that's a good thing. Lots can happen between now and our next contender though so there's that.
