Cleveland Guardians Offseason Discussion 2021-22

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Before people get excited about our improved hitting statistics, realize that it has only been 12 games. And, it has been encouraging but to attribute it to a hitting coach that was mainly locked out from talking to our guys except maybe about 30 days now, is unreasonable to attribute to that (when as I recall he said he has just been trying to get a relationship and gain trust first with them). And, if you look back at stats, it is sometimes the under the radar guys that get the prize of top hitters in ST, why?

1) They are sometimes going into games in the 2nd half of the games when the opposing pitcher goes from MLB to A+ level

2) No one cares about hitting report cards in ST games, yet pitchers and catchers remember how to pitch to the regular MLB star guys from prior years (and don't want to look too bad - maybe be a bit competitive vs working on their stuff for that day)

Some of our best hitters last spring
Yu Chang .282/1.009 (avg ops)
Bobby Bradley .303/.950
DJ .368/1.166
Roberto Perez .296/.997
Owen Miller .390/.932
Alex Call .385/.852
Ernie Clement .585/1.090

Leave it at that .... But, the next 6 or so games will be more meaningful than the first 12 as pitchers are doing their last go around and want to end on a high note vs just putting in their pitch count for the day. Hopefully we can get a few more hits than last night.

I know he claims he is just getting to know them, because he can't say he wasn't talking with players during the lockout, but do we really know that? For all we know, he was sending daily encouraging texts all through the labor dispute, the occasional hilarious meme, or inspirational movie quote. What is clear is the Gs are now reaping the benefits. This offense is going to wreck some shit come the regular season!!

Now to get silly: it is actually pretty encouraging to see Owen Miller tearing it up again, maybe he is going to prove all his doubters here wrong and become a bigleaguer.

Bimbo has said that GMs couldn't and didn't talk to their players or agents about deals without repercussions. Tatis and others who were injured, didn't even contact their training staffs for legit reasons (but that could be for other reasons like riding motorcycles - but others should have) but yeah ... our new hitting coach was talking to our players to get them ready. He did work with Zimmer and Mercado if I recall in the few days leading up to the lockout (did wonders) but OK he tweaked the other guys enough in a few days (or months) that will change their careers.

This "no new news" article from Hoynes is what can be called a setup for a hit piece.. Nothing new is offered in any way about the current status of the negotiations. No one involved in the negotiations are quoted or referenced for validation or factual input.. The potential for an extension is offered in a half hearted way.. & the potential risks involved with not having an agreement are enumerated, several times..

Let the death spiral begin.. seven days to go.. or maybe not..

Since everyone in the public knows about this, they FO is legitimately trying to extend JRam... let's see how this plays out.

I wanna agree. but if we added Correa.... (that was never going to happen - maybe, see Story) would we act like it wasn't that much of a needle pusher...

Odds are the Twins aren't done adding and end up with Monaea and/or Montas... Plus Conforto is still out there lurking...
I like Correa, but let’s not forget how bad the Twins were last year despite having Donaldson and Cruz for most of the year.

If we added Correa, but lost Jose, it wouldn’t be a needle pusher.

Didn't get worse??

feel free to expand on that... this is where you should be a homer actually...

We have a short memory.. Rosario (Eddie not Amed) and Naylor in the corners with Luplow platooning the shit out of everybody looked damn good on paper...

You say everything going wrong..... That is homer-ism man.

I really like you posting Derek and sorry if you feel I am attacking you, but you post some of the most homer-istic shit on this board. I hope that means you're an optimist, am i just a stupid cynic... I want you to be right......

I know some of us "new guys" crammed on in when our bubble burst, and upset your world.... It is just a game and I LOVE opinions.... Don't speak for others, don't lump us together and we can all have a fun season...
No short memory, Eddie/Naylor/Luplow were not good for us at all last year. Doesn’t matter what they looked like on paper.

They were bad and we won 80 games. Everything DID go wrong.

As far as my “homeristic” takes, I’ll take them elsewhere.

Derek - sry I was a little wasted last night. I do like your posts quite a bit. Don't take them elsewhere, just ignore me.

I feel like Bobby Bradley is going to be an immense failure and I really hope he proves me wrong. I despise his approach at the plate but his raw power is just so intriguing that you have to give him a chance.
Do not besmirch the name of the name of Bobby BradGOAT any further.

Best part of the non-existent offseason for me at least was that we didn't bring in some trash, jag level, washed up Hanley Ramirez type to take ABs away from Bradley. Put him out there 130 games and let's see what happens. Sure it might be 30 HRs and a .215 average but would you not be entertained?

I would be.

This is just flat ridiculous logic.

If they get shut down by a pitcher in spring training..

They stink.

If they knock a pitcher around..

It is a high likelihood that the team did not do anything skill based or anything that could be replicated somewhat in a similar circumstance against a similar opponent the reality is that likely when the guardians swung their bats the ball hit just the right piece of lumber by luck despite it not being likely to do that.

Give me a break.
Unless you believe the average player in that lineup has 100+ HR power then yes it's mostly exactly what you said. Except it should go without saying that I don't expect them to be nearly as bad as they were yesterday either.

I'm admittedly an obnoxious troll on here for the most part, so if I can depart from the status quo into sincerity, would anyone be able to explain the team vision if they don't extend Jose?

I can live with the dormant offseason, to an extent, if the idea is to invest in the future HOFer as a veteran bridge to the Rocchio and Valera era.

Refusing to invest in him and then trading him for more prospects, especially with an already cluttered 40-man, would be devastating to us die-hards looking for a reason to believe.

Hit piece by JRam's side or the Guardians?

Well, there’s a tad more nuance to it than that. They aren’t refusing to invest in him….they are in talks with him. Now, your point is pertinent if they don’t come to agreement. But what if his # is 40m a year?

btw….I’m generally in your boat with what we currently have

I know it's not my money, but Jose is going to be worth $40 million annually for the foreseeable future.

Whatever it takes, please make it happen.
