Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Did you watch his first half of play? Baker didn’t even look like a good back up qb. He tore it up in the second half, but this is proof why we should have moved on. His play is uneven. You never know what you’re going to get.

Yes I did watch him in the first half and I thought the playcalling was completely wrong for the type of QB Baker is and the weapons Carolina has. The quick hitting passes when he doesn't have a bunch of slippery playmakers and with a team that knows his preferred passing lanes wasn't going make him look good.

Baker is better when he can move around and try to pass further down the field. If he is making quick passes close to the linemen with predictable passing lanes, he is going to have passes batted down. Bootlegs and play action is where Baker looks his best. Carolina was doing none of that in the first half.

Baker best passes always seem to be for 15 yards. It's where his accuracy is the best and it's enough time for him to see the field/move around to get an easy throwing lane.

Play calling may have been an issue, but at some point the guy on the field has to make plays. He’s just not that dude.

This was a strange column. I think Baker's mom wrote it.

The subtitle of this essay is a real hoot:

Mayfield had little to do with the Browns trading him or the hype around Sunday’s game. Maybe it’s time we all move on.

Yes, very little except for that part about requesting a trade and promoting the "Off the chain" t-shirt.
Or predicting that he would, and I quote, fuck us up?

No, it's those stupid Browns fans who are wrong and have no chill: They blame Baker for their own failures and that's why the Browns have always sucked.

Baker had a handful of good plays yesterday, almost everyone one was a blown assignment by our defense. congrats to him for seeing it. Outside of that the guy played like crap, absolute crap. Batted passes, fumbled the snap 4 time, took several sacks, just horrible QB play.

Thought Baker played a pretty Baker type game.

Had numerous passes batted down, made some bad reads, made a few good plays to keep his team in the hunt and almost won.

He just kind did what he did often for us.

Glad we got this game out of the way.

Baker needs to sell T-shirts that say "Almost a winner!"

You know what’s weird? I feel like Baker succeeding or failing has less to do with Baker and more how creative his offensive coaching staff puts him in positions to succeed. If Baker is your QB, you can’t make him a drop back pocket QB, otherwise you’ll get what happened in the 1st half.

You need to be able to scheme roll-outs and bootlegs and a steady diet of play action. He needs room to make big throws, that’s where he’s best. That’s also why he’s so inconsistent.

He’s a flawed player with notable limitations, but he has enough talent where a creative OC can try to work around them.

I still think you can win with Baker Mayfield at QB, it just isn’t easy.

I was watching this game with friends who are fans of other teams (and were probably hoping Baker would stick it to the Browns).

All of them were openly laughing at how bad Mayfield was. The batted balls, missed throws, INT, etc. He had 3 good plays in the entire game, and they all came on horrific botches by the Browns defense.

If we had even average QB play from Brissett yesterday it would have been a 28 point win.

Baker was atrocious.

Mayfield blamed his struggles last season on his left shoulder, which has since been surgically repaired. Yet the Mayfield on display Sunday looked similar to the Browns’ version last season. The Browns did to Mayfield exactly what so many defenses did to them last season — spread the edges wide to take away the bootlegs and keep him in the pocket as much as possible. The result was at least five passes batted or tipped, four sacks, four fumbles (although the Browns did not force two) and an interception to go with a touchdown pass.
