Game Thread | Game #38 | Bulls @ Cavs | Jan. 2, 2023

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
the officiating around Zach Lavine when he's driving the hoop is as bad as the Bulls fans are complaining about. Surprised that Donovan even got the whistle he did because the Cavs guards usually have to do extreme amounts of BS to get it
Lavine can only drive straight lost his cut, he’s easy to defend now

From Fedor:

During the between-quarter stoppage, Mitchell and Bickerstaff had a brief chat. The two have built a foundation of trust since Mitchell’s arrival from Utah in the September blockbuster trade that has launched Cleveland back into contention. Even though Mitchell usually sits early in the fourth before returning after a couple-minute breather, Monday was an exception.

“Just don’t take me out,” Mitchell said when asked about his message to Bickerstaff. “I said, ‘Look, I’m good. I will find my ways.’ When you ask to stay in the game and coach allows you, you have to be able to go out there and do your job. Otherwise, I ask to do it again and it’s not going to happen. If I ask to do it, I have to be ready for it.”

Fantastic game by Mitchell, obviously. That doesn't meant there aren't other games where he takes too many bad shots early in the game, and too early in the shot clock.

Doesn't make him not a great player, because he is. It's just an area that would help the team as a whole improve.

You have to give a player like him freedom to take what might seem like bad shots for other players. Whatever he feels he has to do to get on track. And his overall efficiency has been amazing this year, so what’s bad for others is not necessarily bad for him. He’s one of the best step back 3 shooters in the game today

What a huge mistake by JBB. He should have ignored what his star player said and listened to letsgocavs, who wanted him to play his other 14 players more, even though only 8 of them were healthy and 2 of those guys suck.

Sorry, I just disagree on that because the issue shouldn't be just about getting him going. It should be about trying to get the other guys on the team going as well, and getting the bunch of them to play the right way. I have watched too many games where there is a player (Mitchell isn't alone in this) who starts taking bad, contested shots early in the shot clock, and early in the game. And after a bit of that, the inevitable reaction of the other guys - deliberate or not - is to stop moving the way they should offensively.

If we go into the playoff where our only reliable bit of offense is "give the ball to Mitchell and let him make something happen", we won't get very far. Because believe it or not, he's not going to go for 71 points on 65% shooting every game.

It didn't work for Allen Iverson and the Knicks, and it won't work for Mitchell and the Cavs.

I'm assuming you mean Allen Houston. But 100% this. Mitchell is that guy but he could be even better with a cleaner shot selection and an offensive game plan

I guess I feel like you’re asking him to step back for an offensive game plan that doesn’t exist and I’m not sure our coaching staff can create

I agree it’s critical to create an offense where our key guys can operate at their highest levels *together*. It’s been notable this year that when Mitchell has been most on Garland has often tended not to be and vice versa (e.g in recent games before Garland got injured). Have to fix that

I agree. I was hoping for a better offensive game plan but it would require a change on the bench. At least we have some guys who can thrive without a system now

Skywalker didn’t even have the 3-point-line!

THAT dude is the GOAT.
Nor did Wilt. And he has 5 of the top scores over 70. And he could hit a 3. Wilt is my GOAT.

Was looking up the Kobe 81-point game. It’s wrong to say that the Lakers controlled that game from the outset. The Lakers actually trailed for almost all of the first 3 quarters (see below). They won by 18, but they outscored the Raptors 31-19, in the fourth. Kobe had 28 of those 31. The game was close, early in the fourth, but Kobe blew it open, by hitting shot after shot. I’m not even a Kobe stan, but that was a remarkable game. Still only 2 assists, tho… ;-)

I couldn't watch the game, & the way I found out about Mitchell's scoring outburst was quite funny.

I checked my ESPN fantasy team while the Cavs game was in the second quarter. Mitchell was having a below average night with low fantasy points. I was like welp, I hope Mitchell turns it up in the second half.

I didn't check my team again until the game was about to end in OT. The first thing I saw was a player with triple digit fantasy points. I quickly glanced to see who it was & saw Mitchell with 69 points. My jaw literally dropped to the floor.

The highlights didn't disappoint at all. It was a reenactment of Kobe's 81 points. The game was close & he hit big shot after big shot. Unreal.

From Chicago Sun-Times.

Coach Billy Donovan rarely criticizes anything outside of his own locker room, but he had trouble with that play.

“It’s a clear violation, unequivocally [Mitchell was] crossing the line on the basket before the ball ever touches the rim,’’ Donovan said. “He beat Patrick, but kind of the reason he beat Patrick was because he went in there too early. Listen, in that situation, we have to find a way to come up with the ball.’’

Williams knew that and even had a hard time getting through the postgame interview without showing some of that emotion.

“I did hear other guys saying he kind of left early; regardless, I feel like we’ve got to come up with that rebound,’’ Williams said. “Obviously, the officiating didn’t go our way all night, so I shouldn’t have expected it to go our way late in the game, especially down the stretch.

Can confirm Iverson and the Knicks never worked.
