Small Forward Safari (2022-23 edition)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
West seemed to get much better than the East IMO. If we were in the west I would have been kinda upset. Thybulle for the Lesser McDaniels was a move I wanted I guess. I do think that was a good one

That every team around us tweaked and tinkered was why I had FOMO...I wouldn't have been disappointed if everyone swung for homeruns because I know the Cavaliers didnt have the assets to play that game. The singles and doubles are the deals Koby had the resources for, and he seemed to just be ok sitting out. I'm not mad, just wish we swung.

I agree with Kennard + Backup Big (either RoCo or Bamba, leaning Bamba). Next year's cap is going to kill the Cavs' upgrade hopes (even though they just need to build the bench mostly).
Maybe the future is Travers/Diop/I-Mobley after all

Why are you saying next years cap is going to kills the Cavaliers upgrade hopes? I, mistakenly, thought theyd have the MLE at best to spend, but was corrected/reminded that they could have as much as $24M available if they play it right. Not a MAX level deal, but certainly enough to get a really good player (Cam Johnson? Harrison Barnes?) or several pretty good guys to round out the bench.

Salary cap is $134M..

Core four, Rubio, Okoro and Wade is approximately $117M.. Guaranteeing Cedi and Stevens contract would put them around $126M…

So either way you look at it, Cavs won’t have close to max room and are more likely in the non-tax payer MLE market..

$134M-$117M=$17M...trade Wade into space and you have $23M...

Never claimed there was MAX space available, but its more than the $11.3M MLE they'd have if they were over the cap.

Joe Harris from 2021 would have been an incredible add. Joe Harris this season hasn't been as impactful. Feels like that was on the table for the Cavs, no doubt.
As he hits 6 threes in the 2nd quarter tonight. :chuckle:
It also depends on how you feel about LeVert. I’m not a fan. I think his defense is overrated and will be exposed in the playoffs, and he doesn’t have the shooting to make up for that.

I wonder if Mike Gansey being the GM played apart in staying pat? It's not really Koby's job to manage the team roster anymore like a GM does. Gansey likely comes up with the trades and presents them to Koby.

We really don't know what dynamic Koby and Gansey has with duties now. They might have gotten better titles but no change in job duties. Koby is still doing the press conferences. He was on the phone right up to the end of the trade deadline according to reporters.

I do wonder how much attachment someone in the Cavs front office has to LeVert and how that influenced trades. I've assumed Gansey is the one who really likes LeVert but it could be someone else. There is someone who really wanted to get him last year and seems to really want to keep him around this year.

I wrote this elsewhere but will write it here too...

We learned two things so far this season:

1. LeVert shouldn't be on the floor with the Big Four.

2. When either Darius or Donovan are out, LeVert slides into that starting spot very well.

LeVert is far from perfect, but he does provide an important insurance to the regular season. Injuries can and have happened to our back court.

Hey, I wanted an upgrade too... I just don't believe the pessimist takes today are completely accurate. This was a batshit crazy deadline and we sat it out. That is a temporary disappointment in my opinion.

Post who you wanted at the deadline and where they would have slotted in

After seeing how Okoro has been playing and how crucial it seems Wade is, I am just not sure we had another need. Kennard and Bamba were the ones that I think the Cavs coudl have used, but both would have been bench guys

To me, Kennard was the surprising one price wise. He would have been such a nice fit on this roster and it would have probably cycled Caris out as well (and avoided that contract stand off). I feel like I am perpetually envious of all the players the Grizz pick off in the draft and trade market. They are so opportunistic.

Beyond Kennard, not much really moved the needle for me. Most of the other more realistic targets stayed put....and Okoro playing well made it a bit easier to just stand pat for now.

Terrence Ross just got bought out.

He's not much of a defender, but 38% from 3PT on 4 attempts per game.

Word is the Mavs and Boston are going hard to sign him. Yet some people don’t think he can help us!

Green was dealt to the Houston Rockets at the deadline, and will likely be bought out with Houston not contending this season. Green has only played in three games this season, as he was recovering from a torn ACL and LCL that he suffered last season. But Green’s skillset makes him a desirable buyout candidate, and it sounds like the Boston Celtics have emerged as the frontrunner to land him should he be bought out by the Rockets. “Danny Green is the interesting player in Houston. I’m told he’d like to waived, just like John Wall is being waived, and not have to do a buyout. Teams like Boston, Cleveland, and Los Angeles have great interest in him.” – Adrian Wojnarowski, ESPN

I'd take Ross, but the Cavs aren't close enough to being a genuine contender like Boston is. Not sure why Ross wouldn't choose the Celtics. Maybe offer a multi-year deal?

You're either in an 8-man playoff rotation, or not. Absent injury, Ross wouldn't be in that rotation in Boston.
