Small Forward Safari (2022-23 edition)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Yeah, so I get it that Hoodly isn't a Grant Williams fan, but credible sources put his value at around 14-15 million per year.

I think the Celts aren't likely to deal with the Cavs, but he's being low-balled hard in this thread compared to his published market.

I think G. Williams is a nice 2nd unit forward, who in that type of role has value. I can see though why some projections might consider his age + being out from behind of Brown/Tatum as being a breakout candidate. I just disagree. IMO things like his 4 year sample size + lack of height + lack of athletic ability limit him to being an undersized 4 with a ceiling that for the most part has already been reached. Guess we'll see in 3-4 years if he is still putting up 8/5-ish type of numbers or something more impactful.

But otherwise my comments are primarily about the player only, and not on what Boston should or should not doing retaining their own or what he might fetch on the open market.

There's a lot of nice wings to hit the FA market this off-season..

If the Cavs miss out on some top targets, Max Strus and Yuta Watanabe would be guys to target..

I'm also curious to see how things shake out in Chicago as Patrick Williams has the player profile of what the Cavs need..

This is one of the reasons I'm not as eager to make a deal as many. Forcing Phoenix to match an offer to Cam Johnson sounds fun. And Yuta on a (relatively) cheap deal could be a good consolation prize. Harrison Barnes is an option, too...

I don't know about size. Williams has some PJ Tucker in him via how he's built, but he also has some Draymond Green switchability via his length too.

In fact, out of curiosity, I looked up their numbers:

Draymond Green = 6'6", 230 pounds, 7'1" wingspan, 8'9" standing reach, 28" standing vertical

Grant Williams = 6'6" [6'7" with shoes apparently], 236 pounds, 6'11" wingspan, 8'8.5" standing reach, 26" standing vertical

Nice comp with Tucker and would agree, although think Tucker (in his prime) might have had a bit more dawg in him on the defensive end.

Am also seeing conflicting info to yours regarding wingspan. The eye-test (to me at least which could be wrong) says Williams has alligator arms and seems to align with different scouting reports have gone back and read of him as a NBA prospect, with a knock being his lack of length.

But overall I agree Williams is a nice player who in the right role (e.g. his current one) is solid. Numbers wise I just don't think see much upside to what he currently provides.

Ben Simmons fall has been amazing and not in a good way

Can’t believe I’m saying this but idk if i would swap Okoro for Ben even if the money worked out

Yea I’m pretty sure the Clippers can snag a bit more for PG than just some expiring contracts…

CAVS expiring contracts are special and can get players no other expiring contracts can get

This is also true of our shitty bench players

It's dead. Cavs are going to be stuck with a theoretical wing defender/shooter who only sees the court when the moon is in the 8th house.

Post who you wanted at the deadline and where they would have slotted in

After seeing how Okoro has been playing and how crucial it seems Wade is, I am just not sure we had another need. Kennard and Bamba were the ones that I think the Cavs coudl have used, but both would have been bench guys

I would have liked a Joe Harris for Caris LeVert deal. Joe is a much better fit with our team and gives us a similar expiring deal next season.

Joe Harris from 2021 would have been an incredible add. Joe Harris this season hasn't been as impactful. Feels like that was on the table for the Cavs, no doubt.

This is why I didn't want the Cavaliers to make a move...until *everyone* else started making deals. Boston, Milwaukee, Philly, Brooklyn, New York, Indiana, Atlanta all made moves. Players I liked (Bey, Nwora, Kennard, Bamba, Johnson) all went for less than I thought.

I agree with Kennard + Backup Big (either RoCo or Bamba, leaning Bamba). Next year's cap is going to kill the Cavs' upgrade hopes (even though they just need to build the bench mostly).
Maybe the future is Travers/Diop/I-Mobley after all

West seemed to get much better than the East IMO. If we were in the west I would have been kinda upset. Thybulle for the Lesser McDaniels was a move I wanted I guess. I do think that was a good one
