2023 Season | Series #38 | Guardians @ Rays | Aug. 11-13, 2023

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Only 2 more innings to give up 7 runs. It’s difficult, but I’m pretty confident in their ability to do it!

Not always, but generally speaking, when you see extreme fluctuations in bullpen year-to-year, it's from a combination of players leaving (free agency, traded, non-tendered, whatever) and players getting hurt.

It's typically not the exact same group of guys like it is with the Guardians this season.

The Cardinals for instance were the No. 3 ranked bullpen last year and are the No. 28 this year. That's as big of drop as the Guardians have experienced.

But unlike the Guardians, the Cardinals have had multiple relievers go on the injured list, including their all-star closer Helsley (1.25 ERA last year) and Woodford (2.23 ERA last year). They also traded away high inning guys from last year's team in Stratton (2.78 ERA last year) and Hicks. They also churned through a few low leverage guys like Fernandez (2.93 ERA last year) and Oviedo (3.20 ERA last year) who pitched well in mop up duty.

7 of the top 8 guys in innings pitched out of the Guardians bullpen last year came back this year (only Shaw is gone and he was statistically the worst of the 8 by a mile) and all of them who are used when the Guardians typically have a lead have regressed, some significantly so.

Then open your eyes because Fry has displayed his capabilities and Lavastida is very athletic.

So it’s karma for letting Shaw go?

Gimenez starts the scoring with a homer.
