2021 NBA Draft Safari

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I think some of this is circumstance though. Cade was born in America, so his route is different than Luka's. So I'm not sure why that is held against him, in regard to evaluating them as prospects? It is impossible to say how Cade or any #1 American player would favor over seas at 18 but I suspect it is far better than most think.

What I was alluding to was this:

One sites' opinion......but they grade so similarly.......6/12 categories they grade out as equals, 5/12 within 1 number grade. I think most would be surprised to see that Cade gets the nod in defense, leadership and potential.

I'm really curious to watch how Cade plays with some college experience. I think he's more of a guy who will gain steam through consistent play over time, vs. being a prospect that is going to wow someone athletically, or on a minute by minute basis as they watch games. Most were unimpressed in a game where he went for 21/10/3, made 2 threes and went to the line 7 times. Imagine what his A+ game looks like if everyone felt that was a B- or so.

I know you like him, I'm more just talking through how perception can swing so quickly from game to game. What made Cade the #1 player was how consistently he performed in HS and USA events. That floor really stands out over time and I would imagine it takes hold and that separation really starts to happen after 10 games or so.

Are these ratings realistic, though?

For example, assuming Cade is on the right hand side, he has the edge in "leadership." But Doncic led a pro team to multiple championships by age 19. I don't know how a prospect could possibly show more leadership ability than Doncic did. Similarly with potential...I don't know how a prospect could possibly show more potential than Doncic did. He planted his flag on all the highest mountains in the sport outside of the NBA.

I also want to focus on passing. Cade is a good passer, probably good enough to play point forward. But Doncic's gotta be in the top 2 or 3 best prospects of the last decade in terms of pure passing ability. Anyone who gives them the same grade there just hasn't done their homework.

Don’t want to get too in the weeds with this, but would you trade Sexton for the #8 pick in this draft, today?

Cade is a pretty special passer for his size.

And more.....

Yeah, but that's kind of my point. Cade is a special passer for his size. If you compare him to other lottery wings, his passing immediately stands out as an elite skill. But if you compare him to other lottery PGs, his passing isn't going to stand out. With Doncic, in contrast, his passing stands out even among lottery PGs. Out of all prospects in the last decade, the only guys you could realistically put on the same level as him would be the Ball brothers and Trae Young. I definitely haven't seen enough from Cade to say that he's on that level as a passer.

Speaking of Lukas, Luka Garza has 36 points, 7 boards, and 3 blocks...at halftime :chuckle:

He is gonna put up video game numbers this year.

Are they playing Northern Iowa Juvenile Correctional University ?

They're playing Southern, a minor conference team that went 17-15 last year. So easy pickings for him. Still, gotta be close to the record for points in a half for a D1 game.

I don't think the Cade/Luka comparison is necessarily completely useless, so long as there is a common understanding that it doesn't entail Cade being as impactful as Luka ultimately was coming into the league or that they are necessarily 1 to 1 copies of each other.

Cade is a bit more athletic, Luka is more polished offensively. I think Cade projects to be a better defender and a somewhat less revelatory offensive weapon. He's still a wonderful passer and ballhandler even if it isn't at the level of Luka, and I trust his jump shot to become more consistent with time. Luka didn't necessarily look like a sniper coming into the league either, but he had enough flashes to indicate that he'd force you to respect him out on the perimeter.

I think you draft Cade with the expectation that he will take on a role similar to that Luka, even though you don't necessarily expect him perform at the same level as him.

Cade is a bit more athletic? vertically only I assume.
Luka's acceleration/deceleration and change of speed is on a different level to me.

I don't know why people consider Luka unathletic.
