2017 Browns Off Season Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Brady - 40
Brees - 39
Rivers - 36
Big Ben - 36 (3 time rapist)

It is becoming more and more common. Plenty of other recent examples of other guys who played at a high level in to their late 30's (including late bloomers).

Smith won't turn 34 until May.....are you saying he doesn't have 3 seasons left? Where he would turn 37 at the end of that 3rd year?

I'm not even arguing the Browns should have absolutely acquired him....but on a front loaded contract with a 4th year that is easy to eject from? Absolutely.

You pay a premium in free agency or on an acquire / extend. The franchise tag for QB's is going to be north of $21 million per year in guaranteed money. If you think he has 3 good years left 60-70 mil guaranteed with a cliff at 4 seems like the market rate for a veteran QB who has been as good as Smith has been.

*fixed

Now that Smith is gone, I'd put whatever qb Minnesota lets go as my top target. I think Cousins will be too expensive for what you get, an Andy Dalton level qb. We should be glad he doesn't want to come here. I'd prefer Bradford or Keenan, even though I was a Bridgewater guy in 2014. Bridgewater is fine as a quarterback, but not experienced enough to lead the qb room with Kizer and this year's draftee. Tyrod wouldn't be a bad choice, but no way on McCarron. Maybe Dorsey willl surprise us, but I'm figuring Bradford, Kizer, and Darnold as the big three next season.

If the Browns can't win a tame bidding war for Sam Bradford, who is a FA, then I don't know what the fuck they can do.

Bradford is no one's idea of even a mid-term fix. I guess the losers in the Cousins sweepstakes may go after him but I would think teams like Denver and JAX would want someone who could play 4-5 years for them even though Bradford is good enough to immediately elevate them (when he plays).

Of all the 3 potential free agent QBs in Minnesota, I may prefer Bradford the least.

But he’s also the most likely one to be let go.

The Bridgewater contract is going to be intriguing. They may be able to retain him on a short deal—then let him play himself into a massive deal.

In said case, I could also see them trying to retain Keenum.

I don’t think it’s a secret that they love Bridgewater but retaining him only and letting both Keenum and Bradford walk is a serious gamble considering how good their defense is. They’re a contender—can’t waste that window.

This was never reported anywhere, FYI.

Also, comparing Cousins to Dalton is LOL bad.

This is true.

Cousins has AT LEAST been marginally better than Dalton.

Last 3:

Cousins 67%, 4.8/2.1 TD/INT%, 7.8 YPA
Dalton 63%, 4.7/1.9 TD/INT%, 7.5 YPA

Though Cousins completion percentage dipped to 64 percent this year, without Sean McVey.

Are these career stats?

No, "Last 3" I thought was a good indication of that. Kirk has only played 3 full years as a starter, so I used the most relevant sample.

For career stats:

Dalton - 62%, 4.7/2.6, 7.2 YPA, 88 QBR
Cousins - 65%, 4.7/2.6, 7.7 YPA, 93 QBR

Also of note, Dalton played his career with Hue Jackson and Ken Zampese.

Cousins with Jay Gruden and Sean McVey.

Let's factor that in too, because it's ABSOLUTELY relevant.

It's also worth noting that Andy Dalton has played with AJ Green every season, and Cousins best WR to date has been Pierre Garcon...

Also Dalton's comp % regressed considerably last year to 59% and his YPA 6.7 (EW).

I'm no Andy Dalton fan, I'm just curious to see if a trade market for his services becomes a real topic in the NFL if McCarron doesn't shed his RFA status.

Pierre Garcon, DeSean Jackson, Jordan Reed/Vernon Davis, Jamison Crowder, Josh Doctson and Terrelle Pryor.

Chris Thompson ain't bad out of the backfield either.

But I don't disagree with you, Dalton has been marginally worse than Kirk Cousins.

Important to remember that when wishing to give him the largest QB contract in NFL history.

Had a hard time reading after this:

Round 1, pick 1: Josh Rosen, QB, UCLA

My personal top QB in this year’s class is Baker Mayfield...

but overall not a bad mock.

Do we actually think Sony Michel will last to round 3?

It would only be largest till next season, it is an over pay, but not by as many would think. He is a borderline top 10 QB...borderline. Also, you can semi front load it, or level it, so its a big cap hit when we have the room. There is some making sense to giving Kirk 6 years, 180 million, i know sound ludicrous, but there is some validity.

The thing is, i dont think its even an issue, no way does Kirk come here. He will get 25 million elsewhere and have a chance at the playoffs day 1.
