2019 Browns Head Coach Candidates

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Mike Vrabel, and Josh McDaniels have some really good connections to here locally so I imagine you could probably sell them on this job.

The issue is this whole Belichick coaching tree thing.

I think Michigan is Harbaugh's dream job so that's going to be near impossible to pry him away.

Todd Haley? Meh. I guess. I like the idea of getting a Steeler though.

Cowher, Gruden, and Saban are god-tier "It's not going to happen" level gets. Of course I'd love the idea of any of those coming here, but it's doubtful.

I feel we need to get a top level coach here to help out this young FO. I know its going to be hard to convince one to come here, but we have never had a top tier coach in Cleveland, always new guys to the NFL/extremely limited head coaching experience.

Continuity for the sake of continuity isn't worth doing either.

It has to be working, otherwise what's the point?

That is true as well, but when the defense is actually improving and we cut something that is going in the right direction and likely to cut more guys and replace the guys we just signed, some line has to be drawn in the sand somewhere and for better or for worse, gotta just keep something going.

It is very possible this FO is stuck with Jackson for at least one more season whether they like it or not.

Sources say he was seen shopping at SouthPark Mall in Strongsville this weekend.

Was he buying a pumpkin?

PUMPKINS ARE ORANGE LIKE THE BROWNS' HELMETS!

This is the absolute worst possible scenario....

Having a head coach who is so clearly inept and over his head but can't be fired because of past impulsive decisions.

The lone positive is that it looks like the past sins of the past 2 to 3 years seem to be more so on Hue's attitude towards the QB's we passed on more so than the organization itself.

Haslam wasn't the guy who pulled the trigger on the trade downs. He may have hired the men to do so but those are not the moves of a Jerry Jones/Daniel Snyder control freak.

e: If he was impulsive as claimed? We'd have Wentz taking snaps right now I imagine.

We did though.

We hired Holmgren and the implication was that he was going to take the coaching gig, then never did.

I mean if you can lure Cowher, Gruden, out of retirement or somehow swipe a coach already in the league? By all means. But that's a really difficult proposition.

Gruden is about the only I could sort of see us getting to bite based on this being his childhood team but even that seems like a really difficult proposition.

Gruden isn't a good coach though at the end of the day. He won games with a previous guys team, but maybe we need that luck right now he had lol

The expectation for whomever takes this job is that they're going to be asked to pull a 2001 Butch Davis out of their ass.

Unlike what the Sashi Brown fan club tells you, it does not take 5 years to put a respectable team on the field. We may even look like a non expansion team as early as next year, if a competent GM is given these top 5 picks in the first two rounds to play with.

No, I meant past impulsive decisions in terms of firing head coaches and front office personnel on whim: Chudzinski/Banner/Lombardi after one season, Pettine/Farmer after two Johnny fueled circus seasons.

Everyone talked about how lucky we were to land Hue Jackson because of Haslam's perception around the NFL for his quick hook for head coaches and front office executives-- something Haslam himself has acknowledged. And now, I think it's safe to say Hue Jackson is not the answer here.

So what's worse then a quick hook? Sticking by the wrong guy for too long. I feel like the Browns are in no man's land now..... they have a head coach who stinks but can't be fired due to the owner/organization's perception around the NFL.

Normally, I would agree with you.

But Im not sure anyone could argue that destroying this regime is a bad idea. They have passed on QB Faces of the Franchise, they have allowed home grown talent to leave, while posting a 1-20 record.

I think this may be the rare occasion where pulling the plug after year two may be justified.

If we're being realistic? I think McDaniels would take the gig. He's got a big ass ego, and this is his hometown team.

BUT...We're not going to land the Hue Jackson of this cycle. Which I imagine would be some sort of Matt Patricia/Jim Bob Cooter or some other rando name I can't think of.

Now...I don't think that's hypothetically a bad hire, but as a franchise at the point we are right now...we either have to be one of two things to land "top names" consistently.

1.) Be located in some sort of "coastal" market (on either coast, and no Lake Erie doesn't count)
2.) Have a consistent winning, "historic" franchise. (which hasn't been the case since 1995)

Jon Gruden, Peter King, Mike Florio have all been critical of this organization as it stands now.

Reading between the lines? The league is not exactly looking down at us for ditching these guys. They've pretty much said as much.

The majority of the NFL wanted to see this regime fail. Browns may get credit for abandoning this crazy scheme after only 2 years. At least, thats how the National Media will perceive it.

Agreed. Going into next season (assuming we make no trades for discussion purposes) this FO will have had six 1st rounders (maybe two #1's) and five 2nd rounders. Add in the ridiculous amount of cap space the Browns will have and any good GM and Coach will put together a team that is respectable next year.

IF Hue is here next year, the Browns must hire an OC and I think it'd greatly benefit them to get someone in an advisory role for the 53 man roster.

As awful as this team currently looks and as painful as it has been to watch, if the right people are in place then it'll be OK. Whether or not the right people are in place remains to be seen, but I'm at least willing to give the FO a chance.

Hue, I just don't know. I wasn't expecting this team to be good, but I'm seeing some questionable play-calling and horrible in game management, both of which are 100% Hue's responsibility.

At this point I'd be more worried about the constant blowouts destroying the psyche of the young players and the few good veterans on the team.
