2019 Draft, Pick #30 - Kevin Porter Jr., USC

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
1) Yes, it's true that certain parts of the brain (i.e., the pre-frontal cortex - in charge of executive functioning skills such as decision-making) are very much under-developed until a person's mid-20's or so. This has been known for a long time.

2) Yes, it's also true that in recent decades, we've learned that the brain has more neuroplasticity than previously thought. Neuroplasticity essentially means that our brain can still have physiological changes as a result of our interactions with our environment. When we learn something new, we create new connections between our neurons. When we experience a traumatic event, we establish new connections. It's also an example of why it's possible to make intentional positive changes in our mental health, whether via therapy or meditation or other ways.

However, #2 does not negate or take away the importance of #1.

Also, this is not me making a statement on whether we should / shouldn't "hold someone accountable" for their actions at certain ages. That's not a blanket judgment call I care to make.

I'm so saddened by the Kevin Porter Jr. situation. I thought he could legitimately be the future of this franchise. To take things further, I thought he could've ended up being one of the biggest draft steals, ever, right up there with Jokic. I think his development is being stunted by this whole ordeal. I hope I'm wrong.

Yea this sucks especially without the team updating the fans on what’s going on with the kid. Really was excited to see him play this season

I'm hearing that he's going to start practicing with the team but that doesn't mean he'll be active come game day.
It’s something, not even sure if he’s met Okoro yet.. probably has

That's a step in the right direction in terms of his development.

My hope is that Okoro would serve as the Chubb effect to Hunt for Porter....

No problem with how the Cavs is handling it... The last thing the kid needs is more press, he needed to lay low and stay quiet for a while... Hope he figure things out without making too many mistakes.... He kinda reminds me of a young Ron Artest, seems to be a good guy but have demons specially with anger management....

I don't get this though. Where is the proof that Porter has a mental disability? Is there footage of him going off on someone? All I've read is that he got stopped by a cop & they found a gun in his car. How does that make him a headcase?

This is good news...

This is,why I dont understand people wanting the Cavs to release him or want the organization to rush him back. It makes no sense to me.

1. You don't release talent like that unless you exhausted every resource you have.

2. The organization made it clear that KPJ won't play until they feel he's good mentally. Which, most people should understand.

I rather, the organization sit KPJ and help him than cut him with no type of help.

With that said,I'm glad he'll be practicing with the team. The team need offense badly. I don't see him playing til February. I hope I'm wrong about that....

Just checking in on this thread to see if we've moved away from Danny Ainge's "Brain Typing" "science" or not.

According to Joe Vardon of The Athletic, the Cavs are assisting Porter reassemble his life before rushing him back to the court.

“Porter Jr. was arrested in November and charged with improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle, failure to control the vehicle and misdemeanor possession of marijuana,” Vardon wrote. “All of those charges were dismissed. He’s 20, and after last season was thought to be the most promising of Cleveland’s young players. The Cavs are helping him get his life together before putting him on the court.”

With his signature level of insight and analysis, Joe Vardon once again proves to be about as useful as a cloth dildo.
