2019 Series #28 | Indians @ Royals | July 2nd, 3rd, and 4th

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
You assume like an idiot, and your entire post is antiquated garbage that's been proven as such.

The play lowers your run expectancy. Period.

Try doing just the minimal amount of research or have a basic understanding of the game before coming in here with a shit take.

If you want to defend the bunt call, I think your only option is to say that Tito wants them to execute it in the regular season just in case it's ever needed in the playoffs. I can't think of another argument.

I wouldn't call bunting antiquated. I actually think it's underused..... It's a very interesting debate because the analytics community are going back and forth on the issue these days.

FWIW, Bill James actually said this a few years ago, "I've had second thoughts, and I've done some additional research. I am no longer convinced that the sacrifice bunt is a poor percentage play."

So the idea Bill James has is that teams don't bunt their middle-of-the-order hitters and that's a very important detail. With teams no longer bunting all that much anymore, the opportunity cost has never been lower for a lesser hitter to lay one down. The success rate of a bunt is slightly over .300 so the chance of a hit is quite high. A failed bunt SHOULD mean you advance the runner anyways.

Basically, Bill James thinks the advantage of the bunt resides less in the inherent situation and more in the identity of the hitter.... akin to the intentional walk.

So in this case tonight, 1st and 2nd, no out, Naquin (L) facing a LHP and the opportunity to have 2nd and 3rd w/ one out for your best hitter (Lindor).... I think that's as good of a time to call the sacrifice bunt.

Perez being this good is something I never would've anticipated this season. Thought catcher would be an absolute black hole. Now? I'm pissed Robo isn't on the all-star team.

Nice win tonight. Glad Clev looked strong.

Just for reference, if Perez keeps up this torrid pace he's on, he'll finish the season with: 29 HR, 65 RBI, 51 BB in roughly 116 games played.

Not to mention "The way Clev is throwing right now" when he's no longer in the game

You are way too harsh on the bunt at times to be honest not going to lie. It is way more important than you think.

I've never said it was unimportant.

That's not a situation that requires it.

Tito has called for a sacrifice bunt by our #2 hitter in the first inning before. It's completely indefensible.

Mercado sometimes puts down a bunt like that because he can also beat it out, so he has the green light to pretty much bunt at any time. This team also seems to relax more at the plate when they score a run early in the game, look at their record when they score first. Lindor gets a hit, Mercado gets him into scoring position and Santana gets him in, isnt that sound baseball?

You pretty much say a person cannot bunt in the 1st nor should then number 9 hitter bunt in what the 7th and put two runners in scoring position for our best hitter with only one down. So pretty much you are saying no bunting allowed period since you complain about it every time even when in theory, it doesn't affect the win/loss percentage enough to matter.

Though I do agree with your comment about Merrifield (don't remember which thread that was in), I wanted him last year (I pushed for him hard last season), but I doubt his price though would be anything the Indians are willing to pay for in the end. He would cost as much as Bell if not more in a trade when it comes to prospects and whatnot.

Edit: I finally got around to watching last nights game, the timing for the bunt was fine, the problem is Naquin is not a good bunter, so is the call right to bunt in that situation? Yes! But should you call a bunt for a guy who is bad at it? No! (Naquin has 3 sac hits, in 690 ABs)

That is part of the issue calling the bunts this season/last few seasons is the fact a good portion of the guys do not know how to bunt properly. I can bunt better than most of the guys in the pros and I havent played baseball since I was 14. Lindor, Mercado, Freeman and Perez seem like they can bunt, but after that, no one else can bunt it feels like and Lindor shouldn't normally bunt unless its for a base hit. Mercado I don't mind bunting since he can beat out the defense on a bunt, but outside of that, should we bunt with this crew? Probably not very much.

As mentioned the Eoyals are obviously royal shit but still good to see Clev mow a lineup to shake the webs.

Hopefully Plesac has recovered from the Oriole trauma.

Well a good test for a young starting pitcher is how you come out after a bad outing. I think he should be alright since he has guys to talk to who can help correct his issues from the last game.

It's amazing that we win a game and there's not a single post in the game thread.

The Royals are a really bad team.

Maybe you and the other guys (I can tag everyone again if needed) need to look at yourselves if what you’re actually looking for is more activity in here. Are you looking for more activity or do you enjoy making comments like the one above? Because the next comment after this you called a guy an idiot.

And just a day ago a bunch of you guys had to have posts deleted by the owner of the board for bullying. BULLYING. Repeatedly. On a message board about the Cleveland Indians. On the internet.

Seriously. Do a gut check here.

Think about whether you want people to post or whether you want to insult people and then complain that people have stopped posting.

You guys can lash out at me again for pointing out the truth or you can say “hey, yeah maybe we should stop calling people names and being mean to people on the internet and we’ll have a better board.”

Good luck.

Right. I didn’t even see the O outing and somehow I haven’t even been able to see Plesac start yet; I’ve missed all of them thus far so I’m really wanting to catch today’s game.

Or fuck around. I mean fucking around is fun right?

I see no harm in posting bullshit from time to time to break things up. But directly attacking people to hurt them isn’t cool.

Just be fucking cool.

If you’re reading what I’m posting in here right now and it upsets you and makes you want to attack me or somebody else in these threads, this board or elsewhere... the problem is with you and your approach to people.

You’re welcome.

And thanks @MGMT

Good stuff. Gimme some shit gifs.

Plesac is a fastball pitcher, with a few off speed pitches that usually have solid command. He didn't have any command last game and as I pointed out in the past, he is still finding that last pitch to make him be able to stay in the pros as a starter, but everything is there, mentally and physically to be a pro starter, just need more fine tuning like any young guy. He is a 2 pitch pitcher to each side at the moment (change up to one side, slider to the other side), so he needs one more off speed pitch he can pitch to both sides (seems like will end up his curveball, which is at 79-80 mph, while his fastball is 95)

Innocuous sarcasm and ball-breaking of posters (without malicious or condescending intent) is absolutely vital to the development of a community’s fraternization.

We are a community; whether or not others recognize that is a different discussion.

is there an off switch on the “I’m better than everyone else” button?

I’m not better than everyone else. I’m much worse at some things, better at others and just a dude.

It’s weird that you’re interpreting what I’m saying that way.

The off switch is don’t treat guys like shit. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
