2020-2021 Cavs Season General Discussion

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Nobody on the bench couldnt score...Whenever,Sexton tries to give them the ball they either miss their shot or they give the ball right back to him because he was the only reliable scorer.

Dellvadova isn't the answer because he can't shoot to save his life. Teams were leaving him and Nance open because they knew they will most most of their shots.

This team needs a veteran point guard that can shoot and score. You can't have a point guard that can't shoot but distribute the ball well and vice versa.

As,for Thomas,I think he can become the backup point guard but needs experience....imo

I forgot about Wade,I wish JB play him and Stevens more often...I want to see more of Kabengele though.
the problems I saw was mostly lack of leadership injury plagued season etc there is more optimism needed but yeah if role players dont make shots it makes it hard. Worst is Cedi having overuse even when cold trying to shoot his way into the starting job being disgruntled they picked Okoro

Won’t be coming here but big news in the basketball landscape regardless

that's a very objective and realistic take. other folks may disagree with it, but i think those highlighted items are what it takes to move forward with the current pieces the team has. it is a plan made without even considering who they're picking, and i think that mindset is very good and very grounded, unlike the top 1 draft pick messiah everyone is hoping for.

Cleveland doesn’t want to put the weight of being “the guy” on Sexton’s shoulders; the franchise believes that would be an unfair ask. Everybody in the building sees the work he puts in, and the desire he has to win, to the point that Sexton hasn’t watched any of the playoffs thus far.

From that Spencer Davies article

Good to read that the kid is already in the gym.

I would actually rather Collin Sexton watch ALL of the playoffs than be so "locked in" that he's not watching at all. The playoffs are a free masterclass in the highest quality winning basketball and in-game strategic coaching. Watching and learning what that is all about can help Collin contribute to that being achieved and sustained here. In an ideal world, watch the playoffs with either coaches who are former players and can give great insight in what's happening on the screen or get with the veterans from the team who have won and see the game through their eyes so you can see the floor better.

This whole "he's so locked in he doesn't care about the rest of the world" narrative is part of his limitations on the court.

Probably just a PR nugget given to Davies for his article from that Cavs source. If so, I wish the conventional organizational wisdom pushing that narrative was more invested in pushing the narrative of him growing through how he sees and interprets the game than shooting over brooms and empty chairs in the gym alone.

If the goal is Sexton becoming a better facilitator, it starts with how he sees the game.

Completely agree. That's clearly a potential downside to Sexton being so obsessed with working on his game like this. By the very nature of him working so much harder than everyone else, he's necessarily working alone, with no teammates. But basketball is a team game. So it may be that so much working alone is part of what gives him tunnel vision. He practices by himself, so he sometimes looks like he's playing by himself.

Cavs might be better off requiring him to watch the playoffs as part of his offseason program.

Didn't read the posted article, but from what we've read previously, Sexton watches a lot of film with coaches and teammates. Last offseason I believe it was reported that he watched every game of the 2019-20 season with coach Lyndsay, and there was a report in season that he made Okoro stay awake on the plane home from an away game to rewatch it with him in flight. I don't worry about him not watching game film that he needs to watch in order to improve. But, again, I didn't read the article.

I took the same thing from that article. He can learn more watching the playoffs than film of his own team. Watching guys who score at will in the reg season get shut down is important. Seeing how little tricks don't always work in the playoffs is important.

Have to say though, Durant is worse than Trae at drawing BS calls. Nobody his size gets so favorable a whistle sheesh

Trade rumors:
Sexton, Nance Jr., Lottery pick for Jaylen Brown.
Or
Same package for Brandon Ingram.
I say hell no.
I keep that pick. Unless I'm overwhelmed.

Depending on where the pick is, I'd seriously consider that Jaylen Brown deal. I think we're giving up too much and would want something back, but Garland, Okoro, Brown and Allen are a really good core to build around...

I remembered the same thing after I posted that. He does watch film with coaches, so that wasn't a fair criticism on my part. I still wonder if all those hours alone in the gym contribute to his tunnel vision, though.

Okoro and Brown on the same team makes no sense.

Brandon Ingram is intreaguing to me. 6'8 with long arms athletic pf who shoots 39 from 3, 46% overall, 23 points, 5 assists, 5 rebs, ect

Ingram has possible super star written on him. If our pick is #5, not sure that happens. Sexton is good, but never a super star, his defense is bad, and is just not a facilitator that Ingram is now from the SF, that puts Okoro at his better position of sg, and Nance is great but can never stay healthy.

Draft picks are over rated, if we can get Ingram for real? I am in.

I rather have Ingraham

I doubt we can get Brown or Ingram. Those are the type of players that teams will stock up on and build around. Scoring wings give teams alot of advantages. I just don't think teams want to downsize in today's NBA.

I still think we can figure out a way to get the most out of Garland and Sexton if we can get a scoring wing in the draft. We might need another two way wing in the 2022 draft but as the talent level of this team goes up, I think Sexton and Garland roles will become more defined. Getting a taller backup PG might also help, I think we can target one in the 2nd round in this draft.
