2020-2021 Cavs Season General Discussion

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
If we tank this year, a year where we have a good enough team to challenge for a playoff spot, I wouldn't be surprised if Allen just signs a QO next year and leaves as soon as possible.

If they hit a home run with a mid first round pick or another trade in the near future, great. But the time for tanking is over.

Carrying Drummond for a few months isn’t a bad thing. His expiring helps us with the cap.

The trade is really bad news for all the people who were certain SexLand would never work. Now we’ve got a young core with scorers and some top-notch defenders. Plus we have really good culture that will get better. An aggressive, skilled defense may be able to compete with some of these 3 point shooting reliant teams.

As for the Nets - that franchise has been a shitshow ever since they joined the NBA and had to sell the Doc to pay their entrance fee. They always seem to eff everything up. On paper they should be dominant but the game isn’t played on paper although they may end up smoking it wrapped around something. Assuming Kyrie actually decides to show up for work it will be interesting to see who has to take far less shots.

Wouldn't it be crazy if they trade Kyrie for Westbrook to form the OKC big 3, lol

Hey! Buck Williams was a great player, and the Nets DID make The Finals once!

If we got healthy and Kevin Love came back and balled out for this team, would we be a playoff team?

Or is Healthy Kevin Love playing one-on-one with Motivated Stromile Swift in a parallel universe, @Randolphkeys?

I'm hopeful healthy and motivated Kevin Love hasn't relocated to Planet Bullshit yet.

I'm hopeful he really does just have a bad calf, which happens. Our boy Wyatt Teller of the Browns has been fighting the same injury for two months, but we give him a free pass because he bashes heads in when his calf allows.

But I do believe two things:

1. The Cavs can make the playoffs if they get healthy soon.

2. Sane, motivated Kyrie moved to Planet Bullshit years ago.

What a snazzy deal! If Allen is a better version of TT, can't get much better bang for buck!

Barring injuries (since what would basketball be without them?), we have some decent depth (and the comeback of the classic rabman_gold, the table! *patent pending*):

Position1st String2nd String-Last String
CenterAndre Drummond (he's still Allen's senior on the team)Jarrett Allen - JaVale McGee
Power ForwardKevin Love (he's still the max contract on the team)Larry Nance Jr. - Dean Wade
Small ForwardIssac Okoro (because he's not Osman)Cedi Osman - Taurean Prince - Dylan Windler
Shooting GuardCollin Sexton (because he's our best scorer)Kevin Porter Jr. - Damyean Dotson
Point GuardDarius Garland (he's our best playmaker at this position)Matthew Dellavedova

We aren't equipped to have a big playoff run, but could get a chance for the play-in tournament. And our roster could change again based on expiring-contract-turned-bargain deals. 10-12 guys who actually have contributed in the past.

If we end up with the 8th-10 worst record, it won't harm us as it did previously because the lottery odds favor teams lower on the list now. And I see some interesting prospects (but I'm no draft expert, so no guessing on my part), we might have a good pick for both need and talent.

In other terms:
  • This deal reminds me of the direction we went in from previous deals.
  • 2015 (J.R. and Shump for Waiters), 2011 (B. Davis and pick for Mo and Moon), 2008 (Hughes & co. for Ben & co.) come to mind most recently
  • Going even further back, 1997 (Kemp for Brandon and T. Hill, a failed experiment)
  • And my favorite one (I wasn't old enough to really give my feelings, but...): 1988 (Nance Sr. for K. Johnson & co.)
  • The difference between the 80s-early 90s Cavs and the 2 LeBron-Era Cavs is stark:
  • Those older teams had smart, heady and hard-workers. 3 all-stars, but no big shot to stand up to Jordan. The LeBron teams had the right ace up their sleeves (when we got lucky to draft him), but not really the same quality teammates (Love and Irving were decent stars, but had their own warts, like health or questionable personalities).
  • If we could combine the quality depth, quality personalities to contribute, and get that one true difference maker (be it through draft or trade), we get the right mix for contending.
  • Allen gives us our rich-man's TT, Garland gives us a poor-man's Mark Price (or Terrell Brandon?), Sexton would be like our smaller version of Ron Harper (kinda grasping at straws, but yeah...), Nance Jr. isn't as much his father but rather a smaller version of Hot Rod Williams, Okoro maybe a better version of Shumpert (maybe even a Bobby Phills/RIP), Porter Jr. would give us a J.R. Smith-type, Osman like Craig Ehlo, etc.
Yeah, I went off a tangent, but it's fun to try to put what we're trying to accomplish compared to previous experiences. What we just did for the past several weeks is putting together a real team (players, coaches and all). No, we didn't trade for a true star like Larry Nance Sr. But can Altman continue to put us in a better position in the next 1-3 years? Hopefully. We'll wait and see.

Good to see the tables are back Rabman!

I hope they hold on to JaVale until the deadline (whenever that is). He is a really nice fit for this team and gives us a 4th big when Kev flakes out. Then move him to a contender for a pick.

Got to love Koby's decisions this year. Just need to find that x factor playmaker...
