2020-21 Offseason Discussion

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Tony La Russa joining the CWSox as their manager is NOT good news for the Indians.. not good at all..
Things can change, and maybe he has evolved, but this is not a guy I'd want...

Yikes. If the Indians don't want to pay the $1M buyout to Hand, I don't think there's any chance they would take back an MLB salary above pre-arb in a Lindor deal. I figured that was the case all along but this pretty much confirms it.

If they know they are under no circumstances going to exercise his option to attempt to trade him, why would the Indians not put him on waivers to try to save themselves $1m?

Unless I am missing something? Seems like the smart move.

I agree it's a smart move. It's also a move that is 100% financially motivated.

I think under normal circumstances, they'd just pay the $1M and let him hit the market.

Just think if they're looking to save $1M, things are probably worse financially than we think-- that was the point I was trying to make.

lots of teams wouldve just declined the option and let Hand choose his team - waiving him could take that option away - just a "what kind of org are you" type of play --- seems to me to be a small time move

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Indians can still work out a trade with a team that claims Hand off of waivers.

I believe you are thinking REVOCABLE waivers which would be during August of a normal baseball season..

That is not the case here. Hand was placed on the normal waiver list. If a team (or multiple teams) claims him, Hand is gone to the team with highest waiver claim priority & the Tribe gets nothing (other than salary relief & not having to pay the contract buyout)..

He’s 76. They had to go to the assisted living facility to make the pitch.

He's been hiding in front offices of teams the last few years lol Diamondbacks, Red Soxs and Angels since 14 lol

Why would the team work out a trade if they can get him for nothing? And if they could have dealt him for anything, even a bag of baseballs, they would have done so already.
As the article noted, the Tribe is doing this in an attempt to save the 1 million it would cost to decline the option. They are clearly hurting for cash.

Question: can the Dolans turn any part of the park into residential and rent it out? Rent all across the city is going up during Covid, maybe a revenue source could be renting out the suites as studio apts.

Btw the Cardinals declined Kolten Wong's 12 million dollar option.

It is going to be an interesting off season...
Safe to assume there will be no revenue sharing this season? Or did that end at some point and I didn't notice it? Can't imagine the big market teams have much to share after losing 162 games worth of gate receipts.
