It's almost as bad as trading an All-Star shortstop and FOR starting pitcher for 4 guys who will play in the minors in 2021.

Their Fans will just have to understand how badly the Accountants want to play too.

Amed Rosario isn't spending a second in the minors this season, and Gimenez will only be in the minors for a bit to allow the organization to manipulate his service time.

In the CC trade the PTBNL parameter was established at the time of the trade. We could take Brantley or a 3B named Taylor Green.

A few trivia notes from that time...

Brantley was playing at Huntsville in the Southern League when we acquired him.

One of his teammates was Mat Gamel, whose brother we just signed.

That Huntsville team had some major talent. In addition to Brantley, it had Lorenzo Cain, Alcides Escobar, Martin Maldonado, and Jeremy Jeffress.

Incorrect.....

The tribe had the choice of the PTBNL if the Brewers made the playoffs. If not, the Brewers could make the choice... There were 4 players in the to be named later category. Not sure of the overall details though, but your initial statement is wrong.

Edit -

Finally on July 7, the teams came to an agreement: Sabathia for LaPorta, lefty Zach Jackson, righty Rob Bryson, and a player to be named later. That last piece took some creative negotiating, as Cleveland couldn't decide between two prospects it liked: third baseman Taylor Green or outfielder Michael Brantley. So Melvin and Shapiro compromised: If the Brewers made the playoffs, the Indians could have whichever they preferred most by season's end. If Milwaukee missed out, Melvin would choose. In the end, it was Brantley who was shipped out (and who, as it turned out, became the only star for Cleveland; LaPorta played four mediocre seasons in the majors before washing out of baseball in 2013).4

Double edit.

I remember this vividly - the SI snippet I posted is the "dumbed down" version of what happened/what was reported.

I love those details, Criznit.

There was a lot of sentiment for taking Green, which I never understood.

Brantley was a 7th rounder and the son of a MLBer. Green was a 25th rounder.

But Green blew up when he hit A ball, hit a bunch of homers and XBHs, and put up impressive SLG. Folks were enamored with all that power. Of course all Brantley did was hit the ball hit the ball hit the ball.

As people seems to be interested in getting some baseball news (& clarification on some historical trades), I want to make the following observation:

During the non-baseball portion of last spring, Buster Olney had a couple of interviews with his BBTN podcast. Those interviews shed some light on the CLE deals of CC Sabathia & Casey Blake (netting of Carlos Santana) during summer of '08 season. Sabathia was nearly dealt to the Dodgers but LAD balked at adding salary..

Here are the names of Buster's guest on the show & dates of the BBTN podcasts:
Chris Antonetti - 5/11/20
Ned Colletti - 4/24/20
Doug Melvin - 4/23/20

All 3 shows are interesting listens & if your interested in learning some of the background on the CLE trades of 2008, please give them a listen...

Did we ever hear who Dodgers would have included? I remember wanting Kershaw and Billingsley but that was a pipe dream. Dodgers didn’t have much who developed other than Kershaw and Santana (for Blake). Yet, Kershaw had just come up thus should have been one of the 5 or 6 prospects w Santana. He would have been a steal.

Dodgers and Athletics making a deal that sees Justin Turner's most like. role being covered by Sheldon Neuse.. It is costing the Dodgers a bullpen piece, so, it's not a throw in/away..

Could spell the end of Justin Turner's tenure as an LAD..

Thoughts?

Is Neuse really thought of as a potential starter for the Dodgers? I am not familiar with him, but his numbers do not scream starter for the World Champs.

Neuse doesn't look like a real option on the surface, but he does fit a pattern of Dodger seemingly minor acquisitions.

He was a previously well thought of youngster (2nd rounder) who was an above average producer in the upper levels of the minors.

He seems like a stretch to me, esp as a prospective replacement to me, but the Dodgers don't make a lot of mistakes. The cost doesn't seem real high, so the risk is negligible.

The MLBTr article by Steve Adams intimates that Neuse is a fallback option in the event of Justin Turner moving on:

"....Neuse has seen some time at second base, but his best position is probably third base, which left him blocked by Matt Chapman in Oakland. His presence gives the Dodgers something of a fallback option in the event that Justin Turner ultimately decides to sign elsewhere, but it’s unlikely that Neuse’s acquisition in any way closes the door on a reunion with Turner. Neuse has a pair of minor league options remaining, making him the type of depth the Dodgers tend to stockpile: a formerly high draft pick who’s a bit old to be a prospect now but has some defensive versatility and a solid upper-minors track record at the plate.."

The lack of movement with less than a week before reporting begins for Spring Training says the parties to the deal are not progressing.. We'll see...

Ali Sanchez has been acquired by the Cards, presumably to back up Molina, so that their catcher of the future, age 26, can get regular at bats in AAA, instead of rotting on the bench in St Louis.

Sound familiar?

Brewer fans are really hoping to land Justin Turner (if not JRam) to play 3B if the cost (years & money) is right..

I don't see there being a deal of JRam at this point since a) CLE is not looking to move JRam now & b) MKE not able to make the needed Fort Knox/ godfather type offer for CLE to be interested in dealing JRam now.
