2020 Assistant Coach News

Do Not Sell My Personal Information

So Stump and Walker seem safe, along with the ST staff.

Also something to note: The Browns do employee a passing game coordinator with O'Shea, I would assume that means Stump with be running game coordinator? Or perhaps Callahan?

Something to keep an eye on.

So wild question that nobody here probably has a certain answer:

Should we be concerned that Chad O'Shea is taking a clear demotion by going from playcaller and OC back to receivers coach? With the OC position wide open, this seems like a legit topic to at least work through as a fan base.

That was my very first thought when I saw that news, but I assume this has been discussed with Browns and O'Shea?

He's got an agent.

If there were an open OC position out there which he would have been a candidate for was out there, I'm sure he would have went for it.

The market would suggest, based on his quick accepting of this role, leads me to believe there was only tepid interest.

Eh, we've seen guys who were great position coaches that were simply not good coordinators. Just like coordinators into head coaches.

For example, Ken Zampese is an awful OC, but he's a great QB coach. It seems that may be the same thing with O'Shea, although it should be noted that his firing was a shock to many.

Same thing with Scangs. Legitimately good QB coach, average coordinator who is now going to have to take a step back.

O'Shea was very likely not going to get another OC job this cycle. So if he wanted to continue to work, going back to his roots (WR coach) seemed to be the obvious play.

* Kevin Stefanski interviewed former Broncos offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello for a spot on the offensive staff Tuesday, but the exact nature of the position is unknown. Scangarello could be under consideration for the quarterback’s coach job, or possibly offensive coordinator if Stefanski decides to hire one.

* Stefanski is holding off on hiring some of his defensive assistants until 49ers defensive backs coach and defensive passing game coordinator Joe Woods is officially hired as defensive coordinator after the Super Bowl Feb. 2 in Miami.

I have been very interested in what happens with Jay Gruden after getting busted midway through a mid-life crisis. I don't know as much about Jacksonville as I could but my grandparents lived in Tampa... I could see that culture looking the other way when somebody tries to get a little buzzed and try for some tail.

One minor issue for us would be the Bill Walsh coaching tree - which Stefanski, potentially Kubiak, Kyle Shanahan, Matt LaFleur and others are trying to use to fill in openings, just invited another dance partner. Gruden worked with Kyle and Callahan, and is a ZBO proponent. That smells like competition this month.

What makes the possibility of McDaniel so exciting is the potential to adapt power runs like this into Stefanski’s scheme that was largely predicated on zone.

Temper expectations for this offense until they’re able to address the offensive line talent, but pairing these two young offensive minds with Bill Callahan makes me feel positive about the direction.
