2020 Cavs Summer Camp

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Just a shame Drummond couldn't make it. Hard to determine how effective some of this would be with him or TT in the middle.
Oh well. It's better than nothing. Plus coaching staff can see the progress some of these guys have made.
Most importantly, they can determine the moves that still need to be made.

Fedor has another podcast up about the Finals with some Cavs camp info on the end. For those who don't have the time to listen:

"I can't tell you how much this organization believes in Dylan Windler. He is a key piece of this core moving forward."

"The perception [of the Cavs' need for a wing in the draft] is a lot different on the outside than it is on the inside because of Dylan and because Kevin Porter Jr and Larry Nance in spots can play some 3."

Fedor stated the Cavs are "really happy where they're set up moving forward...to the point where they feel his draft isn't about positional fit". They will take the BPA.

As for which player looks the most different than last year everybody says it's Garland. Cavs officials are saying he looks like the guy they saw in high school and at Vanderbilt before the injury. Due to the injury the Cavs did not see the real Darius Garland. "There is a belief that this is a guy who's going to make a big impact for them in Year 2 compared to what he did in Year 1. It's almost like this will be his rookie season."

Fedor said the unknowns involve the team's "identity" - what works for them, what combinations they will use. He mentioned that Love talked last year about the Cavs having less talent than their opponents and having to make up for it by playing harder. Fedor pointed out that when Bickerstaff coached in Memphis nobody wanted to play them because they played hard for 48 minutes and were very tough defensively. Bickerstaff is considered a "giant asset" for the organization.

Fedor pointed out one thing that will help offset the six month layoff is continuity. They have the same coach and 12 or 13 players will be the same.

I'll throw in a quote.

[Bickerstaff] got them to start caring about winning games and care about each other. That’s not easy when you take over in a situation like that. (The Cavs had lost 13-of-15 before Beilein resigned). - Mike Fratello

Thanks for the recap. It did seem like JB had an impact on defense right away. He must have been motivating them differently that way. He changed the scheme too. I think he had Drummond and Tristan drop more. We saw more ball denial. I don't know defense well enough to really say though. I had heard at the time that they were like 17th in defense after JB took over, which being around the same in offense lead to a 5-6 record with him. Makes sense it was lower middle of the pack. If they build on that, they can be that annoying middle of the road team that can beat anyone on a given night if their shots go in.

That's really encouraging to hear about Garland too. I was very high on him in the draft. But then he missed most of the college season, then he missed the summer league. The Cavs still threw him in as the PG to start the season. To say he struggled is an understatement. I was very disappointed with his shooting. If he has worked to develop his game, we could have a whole new player.

Fedor checks in with a column on Garland. I'm really excited to see the "new Darius Garland". JBB says he's even playing "dogged defense". He didn't say good defense, he just said it was "dogged". OK, that's better than no defense, right?
