Could the Cleveland Indians Come Up with the Pieces to Trade for Los Angeles Dodgers OF Joc Pederson

The Cleveland Indians report to spring training this week in Goodyear, Arizona, and there are still plenty of improvements this team can make to their roster before opening day March 26.

One position on the team that still needs adjusting is that of the two corner outfield spots. One of those spots looks like it’s been claimed as the team has come to terms on a deal with veteran outfielder Domingo Santana.

It’s not the big splash signing that Indians fans have been clamoring for, as most of the fan base has been calling for the team to bring back Yasiel Puig.

While Santana is likely going to claim one of the two open corner outfield spots, there’s a new name that has popped up that Indians fans would love to get on the roster that would give it some pop in 2020.

Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Joc Pederson.

Pederson last season played 84 games in left field and 39 games in right field, and even played in center field twice for the team.

It was thought that Pederson would be off the table as a deal was set up between the Dodgers and Los Angeles Angels, but Monday morning that deal reportedly fell apart.

Pederson is going to be a free agent after the 2019 season, so compensation will be complicated as a team isn’t going to give the house for the 27-year-old who hit .249 with 36 homers last season.

The reported deal between the Dodgers and Angels would have had the Dodgers sending Pederson and righty Ross Stripling to the Angels for prospect infielder Luis Rengifo.

The deal was also contingent that the Dodgers got their mega deal done with the Boston Red Sox for Mookie Betts, a deal that finally got done on Sunday.

So could the Indians enter the fray and try an score a deal to land Pederson? It certainly would fit a position of need on the team as he can play either left or right.

Also it doesn’t sound like the Dodgers want a ton in return for Pederson, the player that the Angels were offering for Pederson (Rengifo) did get some time at the Major League level last season, hitting .238 with seven homers in 108 games.
The Indians do have prospects in the farm system that they could afford to give up for someone like Pederson, but again he’s just a one-year rental so they won’t give up likely anyone in their top five on the prospect list.

The Dodgers have stated that with the deal they got for Betts that they don’t necessarily have to deal Pederson, but they have a crowded outfield, so it would be smart for them to continue to look to make a deal.

Pederson is set to make an affordable $7.75 million this season before he enters free agency, so wherever he goes he’ll want to make a great impression and put up big numbers to be able to cash in next winter.

vs. RHP

LF - Reyes
CF - Mercado
RF - Pederson
DH - D. Santana

vs. LHP

LF - Reyes
CF - Mercado
RF - Luplow
DH - D. Santana

Santana and Reyes can pretty much split DH opportunities since they both suck in the field. That's three of your outfielders who are potentially 30+ HR guys to pair with Santana, Lindor, and Ramirez.

Cleveland Indians asking price for Lindor too high for Mets

Trade talks between the Cleveland Indians and New York Mets got pretty serious surrounding Francisco Lindor. Here’s why the deal fell apart.

The New York Mets had aggressive trade talks with the Cleveland Indians, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.

The deal was centered around Mets prospect, shortstop Amed Rosario, who has four years of team control remaining. The Indians were also looking to add two more top prospects, according to Rosenthal.

The asking price was too high for the Mets, considering the shortstop is due to earn around $40-$45 million over the next two seasons through arbitration.

Rosario is a promising young talent, but Lindor would’ve been a huge upgrade for New York. The 24-year-old Rosario posted a 1.8 WAR last season, batting .287 with a .755 OPS. He hit 15 homers and drove in 72 RBIs.

The Mets top prospect is a shortstop named Ronny Mauricio, who just finished his first season playing in the Low-A South Atlantic League. By the time Rosario is ready to hit the free-agent market, Mauricio should be waiting in the wings.

Had New York sold to Steve Cohen, spending probably wouldn’t have been an issue. But, since the deal fell through, who knows what the future holds for New York’s expenses. They’re a big market team, but they don’t spend nearly as much as the Yankees.

It’s all perspective. The Mets are on pace to open the season with a $183.3 million payroll. It’s the highest payroll in club history by $25 million (Indians fans would love their owns to pony up a payroll around $150 million!) It looks like the Wilpons didn’t want to tack anything onto their already record breaking number for 2020.

Another connection of note with the Mets that kind of flew under the radar–The Indians reportedly asked for Jeff McNeil in a trade for Lindor, but that proposal was a “non-starter” for the Mets, according to NewsDay’s Tim Healy.

You can understand why the Indians would want McNeil. He plays both corner outfield spots, as well as second and third base. He was an All-Star last season and ended his second year in the big leagues batting .318 (.916 OPS) with 23 bombs and 75 RBIs.

Oh yeah, he’s 27, won’t be arbitration eligible until 2022 and can’t be a free agent until 2025.

Now, just 12 days before the Indians open the Cactus League against the Reds, Lindor is still on the team as the Tribe seems to think it can hang with the Twins and White Sox in the AL Central.

I read the headline and thought “wow this seems like AIDS” but I thought ‘no I can’t comment that because I didn’t read the article and some asshole is going to say “try clicking the article next time before rushing out hot takes”’

so then I read the article and it actually sounds like super AIDS

Precursor to expansion? Is that happening anytime soon?

The only suggestion I like is that the top seed gets to pick their team. That's an interesting idea that incentives going for the top seed.

Otherwise? Hell no.

“In 2019, attendance was down for a seventh straight year.”

might want to get all their crows in a line before they go back to the hen house

Revenue is up every year I'm assuming. Until every team has retractable roofs attendance will decline

That has potential for some amazing storylines too if you think about it
