2020 Off-Season Rumors/News

Do Not Sell My Personal Information

The Dodgers were able to trim their roster to 40 and hang onto Pederson and Stripling. Hopefully, the Tribe can still find a way to deal for Pederson considering how crowded that Dodger outfield is at the moment.

vs. RHP

LF - Reyes
CF - Mercado
RF - Pederson
DH - D. Santana

vs. LHP

LF - Reyes
CF - Mercado
RF - Luplow
DH - D. Santana

Santana and Reyes can pretty much split DH opportunities since they both suck in the field. That's three of your outfielders who are potentially 30+ HR guys to pair with Santana, Lindor, and Ramirez.

That would give us actually 40-50 HRs from right field as well since Luplow hit 14 against LHs in 85 games between minor league stint and an injury. I mean Pederson makes a ton of sense at the end of the day from all the numbers. Add in a healthy Domingo Santana with that crew, our power and offense should be there with DeShields being a late game runner/defensive replacement for Reyes/Domingo every game.

Problem is i don’t think the Indians are getting Pederson since i feel the dodgers will ask more than what the Indians wanna give and Naquin in ahead of schedule in returning. I understand Pederson on paper is better, but I have a hunch the brass have a ton of faith in Naquin and aren’t going to go out of their way to get Pederson before the season starts. In a sense I hope I am wrong, but I don’t think Pederson will end up in a Cleveland uniform before camp starts at all

Pederson being on the block is more about money then the roster spot. The dodgers don't want to be past the Luxury tax line. But now the only way for them to get under is to deal Pollock (Not gonna happen cause he has negative value) or Pederson + Kiké Hernandez + Baez or Stripling. So they may just pay the tax and say fuck it. Although with their depth all 3 of those players are expendable if ownership tells them to get under the tax.

Are the Indians holding off on signing Domingo as a last option?

What better options at that price point are there?

Would the Indians front office be willing to trade a higher-rated prospect if the Dodgers are willing to send cash back for Pederson?
Can the Dodgers send cash back in a deal and not have those funds count against the luxury tax?

That would be great, except all indications are that he is no longer on the market.

My interpretation: the Dodgers originally agreed to the trade with the Angels with the main motivation of freeing up an extra 40 man space, trimming some payroll, and getting compensation for a player they're set to lose in free agency.

What exactly has changed from the Dodgers perspective? It really seems like it was all about the Angels' owner getting impatient and cancelling the deal.

The Red Sox sending $48 million in the restructured deal probably changes the landscape

Do we know what it was before? I was under the assumption they were always paying ~ half of Price's salary

I don't recall seeing anything about the Sox sending that kind of money to LA in the initial reports. That doesn't mean they weren't though.

This is more or less what I'm basing it off. By the same token, I haven't really seen it explicitly stated or really implied that the Red Sox are sending more money in the revised deal than the original deal

And from Forbes, fwiw, on Feb 2/6

"The Red Sox, however, are eating $45M of the $93M still owed to Price over the next three seasons, making him a real asset to the Dodgers, not simply a salary dump that they are being forced to absorb."

Rosenthal's original article on The Athletic:

Any trade involving a cash exchange of more than $1 million also requires the approval of the commissioner’s office, and the Red Sox reportedly will send the Dodgers about half of the remaining $96 million on left-hander David Price’s contract as a condition of the agreement.

"and that the Dodgers deem the trade "unnecessary" after completing a modified version of the Mookie Betts deal "
