2020 Offseason

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I kind of like Drummond but he is just not part of the modern game. It is all about 3 point shooting and high scoring wings. No team is going to build around his strengths anymore. You need him to accept his role and unfortunately for him,, that is not a $20 million per year role. I expect he is figuring that out now. And of course a global pandemic doesn't help either.
He's trying to fit his skills in to the modern game and develop new ones - you can see that clearly in the video of him working out. He's dribbling on the perimeter, pump-faking a baseline jump shot (as if that's going to get his man in the air!!!), dribbling by him, passing out to the perimeter, running to the corner for a return pass and then taking a corner 3. That's what he's practicing and that's obviously where he wants to take his game. I wonder what Bickerstaff is thinking when he sees this? Probably "Not on my team!!!"

Or is he open to it?

He'd be better off trying to fit in as a modern center than a modern wing.

Extending his range would be a good thing to do. If he could significantly improve his outside shot, it would indeed make him much more versatile offensively. He could pull the man guarding him away from the basket to open things up for guys to penetrate, become more effective on the pick and pop, etc.. And anything he can do to improve his passing, particularly inside/out, would be great.

But all the dribbling stuff...that's what he needs to forget. Even if he improves his skills there to some extent, they're never going to get to the point where they are going to make him a true perimeter player. Rebound, defense, pass, set screens, make outside shots if possible is how he should be trying to develop his game.

The rest of that shit is what got him shipped out from Detroit for peanuts.

So does anybody know what the deadline is for Drummond to officially accept his player option for the 20-21 season? It would be helpful to know before the NBA draft, which is now less than 2 weeks away.

I did a bit of digging, and it looks to me like that date is dependent upon what the CBA says -- and the NBA and players are still negotiating those dates right now. So the short answer is that nobody knows because that date has not yet been set.

I did find this: it's talking about Olynyk's player option with the Heat, and says that he has until the day before free agency begins to exercise that option:

Options, qualifying offers: Center Kelly Olynyk must decide by the day before the start of free agency (a date yet to be established) whether to pick up his $12.2 million player option for 2020-21. Based on the league’s uncertain economics amid the pandemic, he is expected to do so.

But again, even if it is directly tied to the start of free agency, that date also hasn't been set. So...the answer is the same. Nobody knows because the dates haven't yet been set.

I'm half-way listening to the Wine and Gold Podcast now. Windhorst said alot of executives view Sexton as a 6th man on a good team. I'm shocked by this because I thought Sexton played good enough to have that stigma not attached to him....

Although that also implies that some NBA execs don't view him that way.

I think it would be different if he was able to finish out the season. No problem. Let them underrate him.

My thing is that Sexton has played better than most of his draft class yet he still get the 6th man label. People can say,his numbers are inflated because of him being on a bad team but you can say the same thing about Trae Young too.

The difference between Sexton and Young is that Young is way more flashier and plays in a slightly bigger market than Sexton. To act like the Hawks are winning games is ridiculous.

Never in my life, I've seen a player who has improved in his first two years in his professional career get treated by folks. It makes no sense at all.

There's a lag, and it took Trae averaging 30 to get the attention. Don't sweat it. Just enjoy it as Collin carves up defenses. If he improves again this year, it will be hard to deny he is one of the best from the class.

I write off a lot of the criticisms. Hollinger ranked that class, and Collin wasn't even in the top 10. It was ridiculous. He had Devonte Graham ahead of him who has really very bad efficiency numbers and is significantly older.

People think Larry Nance sucks too. They aren't watching the games.

People who never watch the team should comment. I think Sexton will eventually be the #2 option when Porter stars to reach his potential.

Windhorst said on the podcast he thought the 2017 team was better than the 2016 team. And,Lebron was looking forward to winning his fourth ring before Durant joined the Warriors.

I disagree with him about the 2017 team because that's when the team started slacking off on defense.

They weren't as good defensively, but I still think they would have beat the warriors without Durant.

I can definitely see Sexton playing that deadly scorer Kyrie role on a good team. If you had a true #1 option and Sexton as your #2, you would be pretty good.

Is KPJ that guy, is our new draft pick that guy, or is it Windler? Lol

I agree with you about the Warriors....

At some point, the Cavs gotta start thinking about putting Porter in the starting lineup and see if he can be that guy...

I rather put Porter in the starting lineup and putting Garland on the bench or trade him....imo..Not,this season though.
