2020 Offseason

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Drummond is only 27 and just entering his prime. Drummond should help the team win now, without sacrificing the future. It's not as if the Cavs gave up any young players for Drummond, or have any young centers waiting in the wings.

The acquisition of Drummond is not inconsistent with winning now, nor is it inconsistent with the Cavs developing their own homegrown talent. The Cavs can continue to develop Sexton, KPJ, Garland, Windler, Osmand and this years #5 pick.
Right. That’s if he wants to be here, which is still a big IF. If he does, why hasn’t he picked up his option yet??

I don't know what Drummond and his agent are thinking, but I assume they want a multi-year deal, probably 5 years. If he picks up his 1 year option, there is always the risk of injury.

When the Cavs say they want to accelerate the rebuild, does that mean they are more likely to re-sign Drummond?

Probably means they are more likely to seek players that can help now rather than future picks when they try to trade him.

Could they be trying to work out an extension? Maybe instead of giving him that large 1 year contract the cavs are thinking
something like a 3 year 60 million dollar deal? I don't think Drummond is going to take less than 20 million/year without
testing free agency.

I wouldn't mind it for 3 years if he actually fits into the team. If he just takes shots from other guys and doesn't fit in though...

Does anyone believe all this Toppin talk is legit or just smokescreen. I find it hard to believe they're interested in him after all the reports of the Cavs being high on Deni and Okoro for months, more so Deni.

That’s entirely possible. If I’m the Cavs, using Clint Capela’s 5 year/$90M deal as a baseline, I offer:

1) 3 years/$60M
2) 5 years/$90M

Those numbers might even be overly generous. If Drummond feels he’s worth more than that then you look into dealing him. With the de-emphasis of centers and the salary cap likely going down, due to Covid, he will be hard pressed to do better.

I think by accelerating the timeline it is all about having that vet and young player blend and not looking to add another guy like a Lamelo Ball or a James Wiseman.
I've said this a a fan and maybe I've eaten too many marbles but I think this team HAS some talent and it is truly about the younger guys "getting it" more consistently. So, get Drummond and Love to play at a level we know they CAN play it, have Nance grow into the roll he's in and then the young guys...and BABY you've got a stew going!

This is why, a guy like Okoro makes so much dang sense to me. He adds to the core by doing the small stuff. People love to HATE on Exum but a guy like Exum can be a Livingston for us. Is it a long-shot for this roster to pan out? It sure is...but I look at the rosters of a team like the Nuggets or Heat and I think...why can't we do that? It hinges on various things going well ...BUT I think you also have to be fed up about what's been happening and I think a lot of guys are at that point.

We DO have one of the variables to speed up the timeline and that is getting lucky with a pick and Kevin Porter Jr is that guy for us.

Of course, drafting Okoro makes too much but I'm worried that Gilbert or someone in the front office will rather draft a guy that will put up highlight reels every night than winning games. I think Toppin will be a fine player but he isn't the type of player we need now..We already have players that can score at the moment. We need defense now. I think eventually Okoro can he a two-way player because he has that drive to get better just like Sexton does.

I've said this many times, for whatever reason, the defense have gone to shit after the team won the title.

As a senior Isaac Okoro's HS basketball team was 32-0 and won the state title. As a freshman at Auburn they went 24-2 with Okoro in the lineup and Auburn isn't known as a basketball powerhouse (they went 1-2 without Okoro). If that doesn't scream winner I don't know what to say about the kid.

He or Avidja has to be my target. Okoro is a perfect fit from day 1 and can really change the culture among the guys we already have.

Sounds a lot like Kawhi in HS and College

When you watch him play, he is certainly annoying like that. Getting the pass that was meant for the opponent, digging in, deflection your touches. Just the sort of disruption we need on a team like this that can run pretty well, but doesn't get enough steal/stops to get on the break.

Yeah I'm fine sitting there at 5 and taking Avdija, Okoro or Okongwu. They have all proven to be winners at different levels. They all play defense. They all play hard. Their deficiencies are on the offensive side of the ball (mostly shooting) and the Cavs seem to have enough offense already in their lineup with the Sexton, KPJ, Garland, Love, Windler, and possibly Drummond taking the bulk of the shots.

Chris Fedor said on the podcast today that he believes Okoro,Avdija and Toppin(no particular order) are the Cavs top three on their list. He also said that he believes the Cavs should get Okoro due to his defense and upside on offense.
