2021 Around MLB: Return of the Dead Ball Era

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Chang hasn't been getting enough ABs to get over his confidence issues...
I love your positive outlook Coach, but the truth is Chang doesn't appear to be a capable hitter at the MLB level. After all, we're talking about a career minor league hitter with a line of 251/326/436/762. What Chang offered is some defensive versatility and power for a MIF. We haven't seen much power while with Cleveland because he just not a very good hitter IMO. Trust me when I say that I want him to succeed, but he's not helping this team right now. I do feel bad for him in a sense because there are a few teams out there that could probably afford to give him more AB than he's getting in Cleveland.

Challenge Updates:

Trade Challenge

Francisco Lindor (bWAR); 0.4

Andres Gimenez 0.2 + Amed Rosario 0.2 = 0.4 (And we are TIED!)

Derek Challenge

Francisco Lindor (fWAR): 0.3 OPS: .600

Lindor strikes out three times in two consecutive games for the first time in his career Friday and Saturday before hitting a (fairly significant) 8th inning solo homer last night. Hard to tell if he's really turning a corner.

Adam Plutko has been doing a nice job for the O's - gets the start in an opener game v Yankees - 1 inning, 4 hits, 4 runs, 2 home runs - end of day for adam
-
ex Indian Frazier with one of the bombs - ex Indian Urshela helped out Plutko by hitting into a bases loaded double play

Well, another lousy weekend for all concerned in the challenge update:

Trade challenge:

Francisco Lindor (bWAR): 0.1

Andres Gimenez 0.0 + Amed Rosario 0.2 = 0.2 (and we are no longer tied!)

Derek's Challenge (prediction 5.5+ fWAR; over 800 OPS)

Francisco Lindor (fWAR) 0.1, .582 OPS

From today's Fangraphs chat with Kevin Goldstein. Glad we have Hedges, hurry back Roberto.

Q: How valuable is a catcher that calls a good game/handles a pitching staff well? I know those aren’t things that can be objectively measured but how do teams weigh intangibles like that?
Kevin Goldstein: INSANELY valuable. One of the most underrated talent sets in the game. I can’t stress this enough.

Rivera had two passed balls last night which is more than Berto usually has in a full season. He did manage to prevent a few wild pitches, though.

Lots of folks in Oakland are pissed.

I really feel for them.

They are in a tug of war between the city and these ball clubs, and the issue of tax-payer funded venues.

Oakland is a weird situation. In the richest, most productive economic region in the US, that city is poverty stricken.

In the end they lost their football team, they more or less lost their basketball team and now they are going to lose their baseball team.

And with the way that city is, it is actually hard to argue that they should spend a billion dollars on venues for teams who are more than self-sufficient.

Being self-sufficient is over rated or untrue.. more of the latter than most want to admit..

The economic impact / effect of having a baseball team in the Oakland area has been studied dozens of times.. the bottom line: Having the Oakland A's in town annually generates anywhere from $ 350 to $ 400 million dollars to the city of Oakland and the county.. If you're a franchise owner, do you want to foot the bill for a BILLION dollar stadium out of your pocket while your alleged business partner(s), the city and county, rake in hundreds of millions under the misrepresentation that the team's ownership is "self sufficient".. No team.. no economic impact.. no problem.. Other cities will GLADLY take on a billion dollars in debt financed over decades for less than three to five year payback..

MLB franchise owners.. don't have a printing press for money.. they need to work with a community to create a "win-win" for everyone..

or..

If you want to dance.. you have to pay the band..

Thoughts?..

My thought is that you have no idea what the term "self sufficient" means.

Thinking isn't a strong suit of yours, then..
Really?

You continuously use the term "self sufficient" when discussing the finances of MLB ballclubs, but then you don't talk about their internal finances.

How much extra revenue is generated in an area because a business is located there has nothing to do with them being self sufficient.

Your entire post has nothing to do with the topic you claim it does. Next time, you might want to figure that out before you start telling other people thinking isn't their strong suit.
