So, our FO has had at least two discussions...short or otherwise...with Pittsburgh about the evidently unobtainable Reynolds. As part of the discussions, there has been talk of an equally unobtainable package of Cleveland prospects.
Three things that both teams know....
Cleveland covets Reynolds, Pittsburgh is willing to deal him, and would love to have several of our youngsters. Both sides know what the other wants.
Perhaps Pittsburgh is intrigued with the possibilities. Perhaps the Pirates have a vision of what the Pirates could look like in two years, if it had the bevy of Guardian prospects it desires. Would they let a catcher that is not part of their post 2022 plans stand in the way?
Reynolds and Stallings for a plethora of Guardian prospects.
Why would our FO do such a thing?
Well, Reynolds is obvious. But beyond that, we have a need for a solid catcher this year and a bigger need when Hedges hits free agency next winter. This rotation is not gonna be put in the hands of Lavastida and Naylor in 2023.
Stallings replaces a healthy Berto for less than half the cost. The floor for a defensive catcher with some ability with a bat has been set at $8 mil for two years by the Manny Pina signing. Stallings is better and younger. Gomes will cost more.
The FO knew up front that a Reynolds would cost a fortune in prospects. It also knew that it couldn't afford Berto at $7 mil. But if it could get both Reynolds and Berto for a total $9 mil, only $2 mil more than Bertos option...and have control of both for years...what would that be worth in prospects?
When I put a $70 mil budget together early in the GM thread, I budgeted $5 mil for Berto, or another catcher. That left about $15 mil for roster upgrades....a total of $20 mil.
This move would leave about $11 mil for upgrades, while filling one OF spot for four years and catcher for three.
