2021 Draft Lottery

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
The talent that even Chris Grant could stumbled upon even if he couldn't resign them or eventually let them go is what worries me about Koby and his ability to get players from outside the top 8 in the draft.

Chris Grant had way more misses in the draft than hits. Kyrie was his only true hit and TT was nice but not at #4 in a draft that had so many good players. I don't think was a good talent evaluator at all.

Chris Grant was able to stumble upon Sessions, Wayne Eillington, Speights, Spencer Hawes, Livingston, CJ Miles, and Delly. He even had Seth Curry on the roster. Even Alonzo Gee was a solid rotation player for us for a couple years and Koby hasn't even been able to stumble on to that level of talent.

Building this team is going to have to come from avenues more than just the top 8 of the draft. I just don't think Koby has shown he is able to get talent from any of those other avenues.
Well outside of Delly if those stumblebums are an example of what's needed then we're in even worse shape than I thought.

I must have missed the deal on the table or available draft pick that Koby missed which cost us a superstar.
Again if you are going to blame Koby then you can’t say he has a good scouting department because the GM and head coach make their decisions based on the information/advice they get from the scouting department. I have said for a looooooong time that our scouting department is the weakest part of our FO

They facilitated one blockbuster. One.

If the "plan" involves completely ignoring wings, then every single last member of the organization needs fired.
Yep, that's the plan, Koby didn't draft BPA - he has a terminal aversion to wings. If the next Kevin Durant was available Koby would pass because his hatred of wings is that deep. In fact he's such a fanatic on the topic he made sure there were no wings in the top three players this draft. Dastardly plot to keep us down!!

its not what we really needed but if Koby can't even stumble onto that low bar of talent we probably are in bad shape. Those kind of guys can round out your rotations to help develop talent. Livingston and Speights were part of the rotation with the Warriors for part of their run. Shooters like CJ Miles and Ellington could have provided spacing that we sorely need. Hawes was a stretch 5 before it was popular.

I get why the media has an irrational disdain for Altman. He isn't personable and doesn't make himself available for interviews, back-channel conversations, etc. He either has no interest in PR or is just really bad at it.

I'm less certain why a lot of Cavs fans despise the man so. I mean, he hasn't been great. I'm not saying every trade is perfect or every draft has been spot on or he doesn't have blind spots. But, considering the way David Griffin spent all of our future assets like a drunken sailor before bolting, I don't think he has done a horrible job accumulating young talent and creating what might eventually be an interesting roster.

Idk. This year had some bright spots but we were also decimated by injuries (even moreso than most teams) and that's resulted in a pretty damn exciting pick in the draft. Now, if he uses this hugely important spot and does something off-the-wall like trade down or reaches for Kominga, have at it.

But as long as he takes BPA, I like our roster and we might be setup for an exciting core. I really don't have a really strong opinion about Altman one way or the other. I'm not even really standing up for the guy... just don't get some of the hate. *shrug*

If love and irving did not get hurt we would have beaten golden state they got lucky our players were hurt . thats why i like collin garland looks great but he has not played the last three years without being injured. love irving garland miss to many games .

Let's step back a little bit. You left out several aging members of the 2018 NBA Finals team, a bunch of former Jazz players, a metric shit ton of conditional second round picks, a white kid named after hot sauce, Andre Drummond and a pear tree.

I'm not defending what Koby decided to do with the rebuild, but he kept busy with a lot of Chris Grant type of low impact moves and invited a bunch of combo guards to the Northeast Ohio area for a cup of coffee.

They worked out Kuminga, who may be the pick it we flip Sexton for a big guard

Zach Harper has a mock in The Athletic with Houston taking Suggs and the Cavs taking Mobley. Here's the Cavs' write-up:

Mobley as the guy for the Cleveland Cavaliers at No. 3 feels like a no-brainer. He’s going to be a really nice prospect to develop because of his versatility. It’s a little complicated with the Jarrett Allen presence on the Cavs, assuming they re-sign him in restricted free agency this summer, but the hope is that both guys can play a mix of on the perimeter and around the basket. We’ve seen Allen flirt with a 3-point shot in the past. Mobley will likely need some significant development with his shooting to feel comfortable there.

The Cavs can also re-sign Allen and go with a rotation of him and Mobley for a couple years until it’s obvious that Mobley needs to be the full-time guy. While his shooting is still a work in progress, the potential is obvious. He can hit little pop jumpers out of a pick situation and eventually that comfort should extend to 3-point range. Mobley’s going to be a monster in the PnR, both scoring around the hoop and making plays for others. Defensively, he’s going to be a difference-maker, and maybe the rare rookie who is good right away at it. Mobley is a franchise big man in the making.

Is a trade possible? Koby Altman has been very aggressive in trading during his time, and I do think the Cavs would be open to a trade if it brings them back a significant veteran to help them start winning. I just don’t think there is an obvious deal unless someone like Toronto wants to get squirrely.

I would love it if the Cavs got Mobley and put him at the 4 with Allen at the 5. Nance would move to the 3 along with Prince and Windler. Okoro moves to the 2 and the 96 backcourt minutes are shared by Garland, Sexton, and Okoro.

Another option would be to put Mobley at the 5 and either trade Allen or let him walk next year and use the $80-$100 million in savings to sign a veteran that fits with the young core of Mobley, Okoro, Garland, and Sexton. The best move would be to trade Allen now and let Mobley and Hartenstein handle the pivot this season.

If the Cavs see Mobley's ultimate best position as power forward I would just put him there now and run with a lineup of Allen, Mobley, Okoro, Garland, and Sexton with Love, Nance, Hartenstein, Prince and Windler off the bench. They would just need a backup point guard.

As for a possible trade down, Harper had this under Orlando's #5 pick:

Is a trade possible? Magic should be locked in with the fifth pick, although there’s always the chance they want to get someone like Jalen Suggs or Evan Mobley. If that’s the case, would Cleveland be willing to move down for No. 5 and No. 8 as the initial framework of a deal?

Harper has the Magic taking Kuminga at #5 and 6'5" Keon Johnson, owner of the all-time NBA Combine vertical jump record of 48", at #8, giving them an "insane athletic lineup".

Would the Cavs give up a Mobley (since they have Allen) or a Green (they have Sexton at the 2) for the 5th and 8th picks, giving them two insanely athletic talents to mold? Kuminga would give them the young, high upside power forward they need while Johnson gives them the taller guard they also need. We don't know if Orlando would offer the 5 and 8 for the 3, but it would be very interesting if they did.

However, Altman made it clear it will be very hard to talk the Cavs into trading the pick.
