2021 Minor League Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Yes.

The MLB (not the organizations) pays guys anywhere from $2000 to $2500 a month (it varies from year-to-year, but everyone makes the same thing, at least pre-Covid) plus a housing stipend in the AFL.

The Indians/Reds also have control over a few apartment complexes around Goodyear where their guys stay during spring/instructs and are available year round if guys want to stick around and use the facilities in the winter.

Most of the established MLB guys don't go that route though.

Biggest name I know that is going as of now is Jose Tena.

Guy they got for Bauers (Casetta-Stubbs) is going as well, along with some lesser known pitchers.

Full group hasn't been notified yet.
Any insight as to why Casetta-Stubbs was a no-show at Lake county?

Stories/ info like this need to be shared... Many teams do provide for players but in many cases it is too little (& too late).

IIRC CLE had built a dorm for the players but with Covid in March 2020 it got closed. Unsure if it got re-opened.

FYI... in case people didn't see the tweet from Indians Prospective today (10/5/21)....

#Indians / #Guardians minor league player releases:
LHP Brady Aiken
1B Michael Cooper
RHP Jacob Forrester
RHP Luis D. Garcia
RHP Kevin Herget
RHP Diarlin Jimenez
RHP Euclides Lopez
RHP Juan Mateo
LHP Kellen Rholl

And I guess so ends the Aiken experiment. I'm kind of surprised he lasted that long.

Man did Kellen Rholl have a lousy year. Was one of those super fringy but may have something relievers who hit the ground stumbling and never recovered. Was pretty wild in 2019 but had intriguing numbers..

He "may" get another look somewhere else.

Aiken stayed as a player on a roster so that the Indians could help him with medical issues, iirc. Please correct if that’s inaccurate.

Probably wrong forum but journalism isn’t about the whole story anymore. It is about creating sympathy, empathy, anger and other emotions to get readers to read whole article.

Yet, if you think about it, how much is your housing and food? Let’s say, 40% of your budget (after taxes)? Now, $2,000 to $2,500 may seem to little per month. If you factor in 8 hr days (workouts and games - being generous) x 6 days a week for 4 weeks per month that’s 200 hrs. So they get paid $10 to $12 per hour (not close to proposed $15 minimum). However, add in housing and food stipend and you may get to $15 to $20 per hour for young kids pursuing a dream. For a guy without kids or spouse, it’s a price many are willing to pursue to be one of the 1% (or less) to live their dream of a callup. If you got kids, it becomes harder but you then got to say is this about pursuing a dream or being responsible and move onto coaching or scouting.

Plus, for 1/3 the guys who make it close (more than 2-3 years in low minors), they usually got a signing bonus to help.

I just prefer to understand whole story. I also wonder if the reduction of teams means those players left got a bump to a more livable wage to raise family. It’s hard to keep a team afloat on $10 tickets or there would be more independent teams. I wonder what they make compared to minor league’s $2000-$2500? I assume it is not nearly that much but they still got to put in same work and pay for their own coaching/trainers.

Part of the issue is they do need to do a better job of taking care of the players in the minors league wide, not just one organization. I personally think MLB has to set standards for all teams to follow, while some have been good others haven't been.

Is Aiken the worst 1st rounder of the modern era for the Tribe? The man showed nothing. Never should have even been promoted out of AZ. Fascinating how each CLE sports franchise rotated taking an absolute, horrendous turd. In 2013, the Cavs took the double deuce of Bennett and Karasev. In 2014, the Browns took Justin Gilbert and Baker Mayfield Sr. I guess at least only one Tribe 1st rounder was useless,as Triston at least looks like an innings eater. But my god, just absolutely wasted 1st rounders.

please dont mix up Baker with Johnny Manziel....

Baker is light years ahead of Johnny...
Then again my dead grandfather is laps ahead of Johnny...

My point earlier had been some of the organizations that are doing well need to have stories about them just like there are stories about the poor situations from some teams..

I guess I'll pile on. If you look at Aiken's complete history, an unsigned (he wanted more money!) overall 1st pick of the draft to ultimately become a mid-level 1st round pick who struggled mightily in Low-A... Forget modern era, possibly of all time and one of the biggest bust in all of baseball.
