2021 Minor League Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
The biggest problem I have with Jones is that I don’t think he’s gotten significantly better as a prospect as he’s moved up. He’s held his head above water, sure, and still showed off some skills as to why people like him… but he hasn’t been a guy who you’ve said yeah, he’s improved this or that in his game that’ll really help him at the next level.

I don’t really think that’s a fair way to look at. He’s been extremely young for every level he’s been at and he’s moved up every year and maintained stellar numbers. He has to be improving every year to move up and not have a significant drop in performance.

I think the big division is what information people are looking at. I completely understand looking at his counting stats and seeing that his power numbers haven’t grown like you may expect based on the scouting reports that rave about his power potential, but his wOBA and RC+ have been outstanding at all levels.

I like Jones, am not one focusing on his K numbers or anything, and am quite pleased to see him get hot of late.

But my slightly lesser view of him as a prospect is where he plays. He came up as a 3B. I don't think anyone here thinks he's going to play meaningful time there at the MLB level. Yet, that's still where he gets the bulk of his PT, with 30 games this year at 3B, 11 in the OF, and only 1 at 1B. As a 1B or OF, I think his prospect standing falls for a couple of reasons. For one, it's pure speculation how well he'll take to those newer positions. For another, some (though not nearly all) of the value of his bat was tied to him being slotted at 3B. We simply have better prospects who are likely to stick in the MIF/3B. So he falls a bit in that regard in my book.

As an OF, is he Chisenhall? Yippee, I guess? Naylor? Keep in mind Naylor is only a year older than he is and has been playing in the majors since he was 21.

I actually just saw Alex Call play in Akron on Saturday... wouldn't have even remotely thought he'd be the guy getting a call to Cleveland..

They haven't announced anywhere from what I can see, who will be up to replace Naylor...
I'd be surprised if it was Jones... I think it'll either be Mercado or Johnson.

I agree with this on principle, but I think Trenton Brooks has "earned" 1st base duties most days.

Jones in RF most days, LF,3B,1B,DH the rest. Miller anywhere needed.

Earned or not, the present situation calls for the FO to develop a back up plan behind Bradley at first base, preferably a 1B with the ability to play RF reasonably well. In other words, Josh Naylor, Jr.

The job description fits only two kids in Columbus....Jones and Miller. Neither can learn the job while playing other positions.

The Bradley backup plan was (and still is) Naylor and Miller. Nolan Jones should be committed to the OF/RF 100%. If anyone ends up playing 1st if Bradley cannot it, will be Chang or Miller or a trade before Jones in 2021 IMO. Brooks can play OF too I guess, if you want to press Jones into 1st base service.. I just don't see any future for Jones at 1st base when RF is such a natural and somewhat pressing need.

Edit. Completely disagree about Miller not being able to learn on the job while playing other positions. Not ideal for sure, but he can handle it. Jones, probably not.

Mercado officially up. Kind of surprised they didn't go with the LHH in Johnson. Oh well, I'm excited to see what Mercado can do. He was lights out as a rookie.

Kyle Nelson down to Columbus. Logan Allen also officially up.

Could Benson make it as sort of a power hitting version of Zimmer? Tools minus the hit tool are all still there.
Benson at age 23 having his best year since turning pro which isnt saying much. 406 OBA ,484 SLG 890 OPS is encouraging despite poor BA of 226. Putting him in at leadoff position was a good idea.
