2021 NBA Draft Safari

Do Not Sell My Personal Information

The issue with Mobley right now is his inability to post up and establish good position(it's technique as well as strength),lack of post moves and teammates not using him to his full strengths.
Also, I'm still unsure about his defensive upside/ability. I'll have to watch more.

Yeah Mobley definitely needs to bulk up some, his value in the post as a screener and rebounder is limited right now by his skinny frame...Right now he's held back by his frame but when he gets in his spot where he's comfortable he's so good. He's definitely got star potential. It's early as hell but at this point have Cade, Jalen Jackson, and Mobley as my top 3 Cav targets in the next draft (with a bunch of guys like Barnes and Z. Williams not too far behind).
Just for now I'm going to assume they don't take anymore guards unless Suggs and/or Green are by far the best on the board.

I think it's far from a sure thing that both Garland and KPJ are on the team and seen as part of the core come next summer. We could very well have need for another guard, though a PF/C will probably be higher priority.

@red nice job posting some guys that off the the radar that could be some nice targets for picks in round 2 or late one in case they buy a pick or trade for one at the deadline. Not only does this draft have a chance to have a really strong top 10, there are guys who might actually stick in round 2 as solid bench guys.
Last draft was not worth it, but really would be nice to come away with two players in July. One top ten pick and another pick where you would target a guy that ends up being part of a 9 man rotation of a playoff team ( which hopefully the Cavs are building towards soon)

Fill in the blank: Luka Garza is the best offensive NCAA center since ______________.
I don’t think you were around but before the Cavs won the lottery and were slotted to pick 8th several posters had convinced themselves Doug McDermott was the next Larry Bird and got really offended when he was compared to non athletic white guys. I don’t feel like looking up the thread, but it would be pretty funny to go back and read. I recall he was a scoring machine his last year in college.

I was around, but I wasn't very keen on McDermott for a couple of reasons. First, while McDermott wasn't a hopeless prospect, he was being talked about in the mid lottery, which was way too high. That's not the case for Garza. Second, McDermott was statistically one of the worst defensive players in NCAA history, which is also not the case for Garza.

I'll elaborate on that second point a bit more...last year, Garza averaged 0.8 steals and 1.8 blocks per game. That's probably below average for a center prospect, but only mildly below average. McDermott in comparison averaged 0.2 steals and 0.1 blocks per game, easily the worst numbers by any wing who's ever been drafted as far as I'm aware. I think defense will be a weakness for Garza at the NBA level, but I don't think he's a lost cause on that end. It's not hard to find centers who're relatively unathletic but still hold their own on defense thanks to their strength/rebounding, motor, nimble footwork, and active hands. Garza could be one of those guys.

Hansbrough? Garza's raw stats are better, but Hansbrough also had less usage with Ty Lawson, Ellington, and Danny Green next to him.

May be the best ever offensive center to go undrafted?

Hansbrough has a case, though I don't really think of him as a true center. Might give Garza the edge with his improving 3-point shot, which ended up being a critical weakness for Hansbrough. Teammates thing is a bit of a double-edged sword, as having better teammates generally means fewer but higher quality scoring opportunities.

At any rate, if Hansbrough can be drafted at #13, surely Garza with his better range on offense and better size on defense deserves a look in the first round at least...right? I'm harping on this so much it's going to sound like Garza is my favorite guy in the draft, which he's not...I just think he's criminally underrated compared to similar prospects in years past.

That's fair. His bully ball post offense and slow pace really doesn't fit with the modern NBA, and he's going to get abused defensively in switches. But at some point putting up 30+ points by halftime every game this season has to be worth something. Giving guys like AD, Jokic, etc. a different look and making them bang in the post has value in itself. His touch and range is intriguing too. A little Brook Lopez-esq, a guy who's provided value as a slow big with his ability to extend his game out to the NBA three.

Not sure I see him as a first, and I don't know if Hansbrough going 13 helps his case (a guy who, if I recall, was thought of as a late first, early second up until the draft). But what he's doing in college basketball is certainly impressive.

I generally agree (though I'd point out that Iowa is actually among the fastest-pace teams in the Big 10). Just surprised because scouts are often quick to fall in love with elite scorer prospects and generally gloss over their various weaknesses. For some reason Garza is getting the opposite treatment even though his weaknesses don't seem too severe. He obviously led Iowa in scoring, but also led the team in rebounds (305, no one else had more than 200) and steals+blocks (81, no one else had more than 50). He's not a prima donna scorer who stands around on defense in the name of conserving energy or avoiding foul trouble...he seems like a genuinely good teammates who hustles up and down the court and does his best to play winning basketball on every possession.
