2021 Series #26 | Indians @ Rays | July 5-7, 2021

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
part or the problem is that we only have 3 starting pitchers who are mlb quality
What would have changed today if we had 5 starting pitchers that were all star worthy?

1. I would have pulled Quantrill after the fifth inning on Sunday since he was well above his season-high for most pitches thrown in a game with Carlos Correa slotted to be the first batter he faced.
2. I would have not called for Roberto Perez to bunt in the tenth inning of that game and then give a bizarre explanation in the postgame press conference.
3. I would have not thrown Clase out for the ninth on Monday when he threw two innings on Sunday. No reason Sandlin couldn't have pitched in the eighth and Karinchak then close it out in the ninth.
If I remember correctly, points 2 and 3 were even brought up in this forum.

I'd also like to remind you that "nobody has posted their complaints!" is far different than "Nobody has any problems." I think the "Teflon Tito," as you put it is a construct of your own imagination.

Personally, all of my beef with Tito's decision making has been well-documented. I don't care to continue bringing it up year after year when, for example, he bunts in situations where he shouldn't, and I'm sure there are others who feel the same.

How does that explain zero hits in game two?
You're not wrong.

Where the Indians rank as a team..

Offense
20th in runs
28th in hits
24th in doubles
18th in home runs
Last in walks
27th in average
29th in OBP
20th in SLG
22nd in OPs
Tied for last in BABIP

Pitching
19th in ERA
22nd in hits allowed
Tied for 6th in walks
10th in Ks
17th in WHIP
14th in BAA
24th in P/IP

Not surprising as we were overachieving. No team can lose their top 3 starters (including a Cy Young type at the top) and win games for an extended period. In a way we also have lost other starters because Cookie was on last years team and he's been a non-factor for the Mets but that was another arm we had to replace coming into this season.

It was already a tall ask to rely on guys like Quantrill, T-Mac to fill spots 4-5 let alone spots 1-3.

Just sucks it all went to shit just before we were hopefully getting some guys back as we actually had a chance to stay in this if we could hold on just a bit longer.

Why was Daniel Johnson pulled?

What is up with this guy? He's had like 1 hit in his whole MLB career.

The reports on this board this spring were talking about how good he looked and how he was in amazing shape.

Dude just looks helpless.

Insult to injury is the phrase that comes to mind.

I've been saying wait until we have to play Houston and Tampa. Well, now we know. You can't throw minor league pitchers up against these guys.

I was high on Mejia mainly because he passes the eyeball test. He just looks like a pitcher. But I've come to the conclusion that he can't get his breaking balls over and his fastball isn't that fast and is easy to hit. I overestimated him after he started out by pitching five innings in relief and allowed just one hit. Starting is a whole 'nuther ballgame.

The leadoff hitter in the first inning made an out on Mejia's first pitch. He got one out on the next 37 pitches before getting the third out. He simply can't put hitters away once he has two strikes on them. Hentges did a little better but he also has a long ways to go.

Daniel Johnson was hitting .218 in Columbus which equates to a .000 in Cleveland. Looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane.

At least Franmil hit another home run so we didn't get shut out. The final score for the day was 12-1.

Were all the Tampa hits with two strikes or did it just seem that way?

I think the final tally was 11 of 20 runs scored with two out.

In the first game, six of the seven Rays hits were with two strikes. All eight of their RBIs came with two strikes, including all three home runs and the two-run double.

In the second game four of their seven hits came with two strikes and two of the four RBIs.

Overall that's 10 of 14 hits and 8 of 10 runs driven in with two strikes on the hitter. That's what made it so frustrating; Indians pitchers could get to two strikes almost at will but could not put the hitter away.

I wrote on this board a week ago the Tribe may not win another game before the All-Star break. It appears I may be right.

Being able to finish off a hitter.. close out an inning.. stifle the opponents offense and limit damage... are all skills a young MLB pitcher has to learn.. by doing them.. Sandlin's allowing 2 inherited runners scoring would have otherwise permitted Hentges to depart feeling a sense of accomplishment.. alas.. Sandlin is learning too.. The stuff is there.. I doubt anyone would argue that.. When every mistake is hammered.. or a good pitch is fouled off.. or a hitter dumps a 140 foot gork into no man's land.. it's what has been happening during this losing streak.. it's why it's called a streak..

KC is pretty bad too, no way we lose 4. I can see a split.

You can't be a winning manager when all your options are bad. Thats the situation that Tito faces every day, every game, every inning, every situation.

Take pinch hitting Miller for Johnson vs a LHer. If you consider how both have handled lefties this year, Johnson had a 19% of being successful...in some way getting on base. Miller had a 31% chance. It ended up about as good as can be hoped for, as Miller walked. But in reality, neither option was good.

We have four games until the break. Plesac will start one of them, but not be stretched out...not exactly a great option.

Tito has nothing but bad options for the other three.

What options does he have to play the outfield?

Harold can't play defense and the other three can't hit. Unless he chooses to go with Clement or Miller.

Whatever he chooses is likely to be very wrong.
