2021 Series #35 | A's @ Indians | Aug. 10-12, 2021

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Not even close. Ask yourself where we might be had our top 3 SP not gone down with injury and how that might have changed their deadline perspective. Like I've said probably 30 times, this team is on the verge.
By "on the verge" you mean, falling off a cliff, then you are correct.

This team has played nine kids who have never been in MLB before, and five others that are considered rookies...thats 14 rookies.

We have played six who had never seen AAA before this year, three of whom had never seen AA, and one of which had ever played above A-.

It has played five players picked off of waivers this year or previously released...meaning almost nobody else wanted them...plus one Rule Five.

And it is still debating whether players like Harold, Zimmer, Chang, Ramos, Young, and Johnson should be retained.

It has used 23 pitchers, ten of which have started a game...47 players in all.

The current active roster has 12 players that are either rookies or castoffs. It has only eleven that could be considered established every day MLB players, including Quantrill...players that will play and produce in 2022.

This is not a major league roster at the moment, full of organizational depth pieces, and probably half of them won't make a difference for anybody next year.

Heading into the offseason, this team really needs to find an identity on offense and really shore up the defense. I'm not as worried about the pitching staff yet - get Bieber and Civale healthy, have Plesac make some adjustments because right now, he still doesn't seem right. Cal has really taken some great steps forward and then have TMac as #5. With the bullpen... kiss Shaw and Wittgren good-bye. Still very encouraged by Sandlin, I'd use him in higher leverage situations next year. Karinchak needs to make adjustments, but he'll be fine. Clase in the 9th. So we'll need a few arms, but we'll be okay.

But offensively/defensively is where we really need to do some soul searching... I'd let Berto walk and hold on to Hedges and Ramos. At first, roll the dice with Bobby/Naylor. At third you know JRam. Keep Straw in center. Franmil at DH. After that... ????

I'd like a late inning lefty bullpen arm... Chafin will be a free agent, so bringing him in type of thing would be nice. Someone with experience and bringing an Ohio kid back to Ohio wouldn't be a bad idea in my mind. But essentially I want a veteran out there with the young arms that is a lefty...

I am thinking Perez will be back in 22, but at a different rate... Otherwise if Barnhart ends up being a free agent, I would like him instead since he is solid defensively and usually hits at a good clip...

An additional LHRP would be a good idea.. let's give him a name, too.. how about Hentges?

Tucker Barnhart is incrementally worse defensively as a backstop and incrementally better as a hitter.. IOW.. about what we already have.. This is truly one of the most important areas CLEFO needs to address w/r to trading prospect capital..

Thoughts?..

Bring back Yan Gomes on a one year deal.

2021 stats:

Gomes: .272, 11 HR, 43 RBI, .303 BABIP, .320 OBP, .469 SLG, 107 wRC+, 1.3 WAR
Perez: .136, 6 HR, 15 RBI, .153 BABIP, .246 OBP, .318 SLG, 55 wRC+, -0.3 WAR
Hedges: .175, 5 HR, 18 RBI, .237 BABIP, .215 OBP, .262 SLG, 25 wRC+, 0.0 WAR
Ramos: .223, 8 HR, 16 RBI, .228 BABIP, .263 OBP, .446 SLG, 89 wRC+, 0.1 WAR

IMO catching is far down the list of important positions that need to be addressed....and certainly not one to spend much prospect capital on, unless you are talking about a kid like Stephenson.

That's exactly "like" who should be talked about.. retreads and cast offs aren't the answer.. they're the backup catchers.. a backstop that can hit = $$$

He'll go for far more than they're willing to spend
I actually disagree in that I expect the payroll to be substantially increased and Gomes won't command a fortune on the open market. For comparison's sake, Yadi Molina re-signed with St. Louis for one year at $9 million last offseason, while Jason Castro signed for two years and $7 million annually. The Guardians will more than likely decline the $7 million option for Berto this winter, so they can put that money and maybe a couple million more towards a vast improvement at the plate in someone like Gomes. Plus, they're fully aware on his ability to handle a pitching staff, which is obviously crucial for this organization.

Barnhart has two gg's - like perez - he caught a cy young award winner last season - like perez - he is a major league hitter - unlike perez - he is a much better baseball player than perez - not incrementally better

Count me as not on board with how they're handling Andres Gimenez. Having him play almost exclusively at 2B and relegating him to only being in the lineup against a righty is truly baffling considering where we are at this point of the season in being out of contention. Maybe someone here can explain why it makes a ton of sense because I'm perplexed.

If anything, I'd play Rosario at second and Gimenez at SS... but what the hell do I know..
