Well...Twins pitching just got worse.

I don't know if they did or not... it depends on which paddack they got. He was legitimately good as a rookie, but has been dealing with minor injuries and has been so-so since. Lets see how this plays out.

They just traded by far their best reliever, their closer, for a back of the rotation piece who may get better and a middling reliever in a year where they are trying to compete as their best offseason acquisition is potentially only on a 1 year deal. And they traded him on Opening Day.

Their pitching, as a whole, just got worse. And it was already bad.

Pagan can really sling it, and he'll get into that Minnesota bullpen and be a guy who gives them quite a few innings.

But he was -0.4 WAR last year, good K rate but 16 homers allowed in 60 innings...

Not a guy you're too worried about.

The twins pitching did get worse.. rodgers leaving makes their pen weaker... adding paddack might help their starting staff.. but not as much as rodgers helped the high leverage back of the pen.. imho..

The season will depend, as it always does, on health first.

If the rotation and Clase stay reasonably healthy, the foundation for a contending season is in place. The defense up the middle should be much improved...catchers, Gimenez at short, and Straw in center. And no Harold around to butcher everything will be a plus, although Naylor will be an adventure. Eddie, Harold, Gamel, Johnson, and Luplow combined for over 350 games in the OF last season. Amed and Kwan...if they stick in the corners...will be a big improvement.

Run prevention will be the name of the game, and the team is built for it. Even without our rotation intact last year and less than stellar defense, we gave up three runs or less in almost half our games, and went 60-16 in those.

76 games of 3 or less runs is the lowest total we've had in a full season since 2016, also 76 games. In the others we've had between 81 and 94.

Nobody on our offense over performed last season, so I dont expect regression from any position. But we should get an extra 140 combined games from Straw and Franmil. (There are the offensive additions.) Plus, two players I expect to produce much better this year are Franmil and Gimenez. Now, all we need is one other kiddie (Kwan? Miller? Bradley?) to turn into a productive MLB bat.

It is true that Chicago, Minnesota, and Detroit made additions. But pitching is still the name of the game.

Chicago lost 24 starts from Rodon and will lose at least ten from Lynn. Thats 30+ starts from their two best pitchers last year. How did losing 30 starts from our rotation work last year?

Minnesotas rotation is Gray, ?,?,?,?. Detroits is Rodriguez and 520 combined MLB IP.

*****************

We began the off season as a 87 win team. We've done nothing external to improve it, while the others did. Our FO and a lot of fans expect the unknown to vastly improve this team. I expect them to be partially right.

If we stay reasonably healthy, 84 wins...give or take...and second place. But if Chicago loses another SP, things could be interesting.

From The Athletic:

An executive from one club said he is “terrified” by the number of injuries that might occur in April, saying, “We’re not close to being ready to play.” An athletic trainer from another club fears a wave of physical issues arising during the first six weeks of the regular season. Virtually everyone in the sport shares similar concerns...

I'll be glad to see Rogers go, but I'm not sold that Minnesota isn't a better team now. If Paddack regains any of his form then they are certainly better. Either way, they and Detroit are going to surpass us as things currently stand. That's not a big deal to me honestly because this season is about development. Should some youngsters provide enough to make us competitive then that would be awesome. I'm all for it, but reality suggests that we don't have the youngsters that are ready to fill in the areas needed. The optimistic side of me takes the over on 76.5 wins. However, the realist in me suggests the opposite. All I care about right now is that the future for the Guardians looks extremely bright.

How did Paddack look this spring?

Yeah, as much as I respect Falvey & Company in Minnesota, if Ruben Niebla signed off on trading Chris Paddack, I'm not sure if there's much reason to think Paddack will eventually blossom.

Think it says more of how strong the Padres rotation currently is + their win now approach than it is an indictment on Paddack. If everyone is healthy Paddack is probably the 7th best starter on the Padres, not even factoring in Gore.

Makes you wonder if Duran is their closer by mid-season, and years to come. We know Baldelli is a Kapler committee wannabe, however.

Any word on the outcome of De-lo Santos the RP he was killing it in spring training games, I know he not on the 40 right now, someone will have to be remove ( Logan Allen) …….
