Does anyone have some Intel on Tyler Thornton? Played at Lymchburg out of ASU. He is 22, so not particularly young, but allowed just 15 hits in 34.2 innings with 58 strikeouts. He walked 21 and hit 4 so his weakness seems evident.

I think there maybe something to like here. I would ignore the early season (May) stats as many pitchers are going through our mechanical adjustments and need to feel comfortable in game action. Take a look at June/July/Aug/Sept numbers ... low BAA and his W to Ks are steadily increasing to 4/5 to 1 ratios.

Listening to the game today on Sirius XM and got the Rangers feed.

It was funny listening to them just complain about Karinchak and how slow he is on the mound. Those guys just wanted to go home and this clown was walking around, grabbing the bag, flipping the ball around, stepping off, blah blah blah. It was great.

I've been reading thru a lot of different articles on this team, and a lot of descriptions.

Youngest...play ball the right way...play hard...never quit...unbelievable...surprising...weak division...no one gave them a chance....Guardiac Kids...yada yada yada.

Then talk of the post season, and who we might have to play.

It just hit me.

We may all in a way be over looking something.

This team is good. It may be REAL good.

Can the Guardians compete with (fill in the blank)?

A better question might be...

Can (fill in the blank) compete with the Guardians?

Seriously.

Playing the Guardians is like being pecked to death by a chicken.

*********

Hedges described it best.

'This team doesn't rise to the occasion, because every day is the occasion.'

IMO the two biggest challenges in the stretch run were how the kids would react and how much gas would be left in the tank. Well, they reacted well and it appears that they added some jet fuel to the tank.

If Hedges description is correct and Titos message of having fun while playing one game at a time holds, this team may go into the post season with the least pressure on them of any team left.

Playoff baseball is a whole new ball game, in which the focus is on every pitch of every inning. Seriously, what team plays that way every day? Every play?

If you blink...if you bobble...if you hesitate...if you have to think...if you miss a cut off man...

This team scores another run.

The Guardians already play post season, short series, baseball.

Plus we have a faux playoff set, a practice run if you will against the Rays up next.

Follow that up with a better playing Royals team with nothing to lose, we should get a reality check of some sort.

I'm sure at this point the Royals FO would like to secure a better draft position, but their ML ballclub doesn't play by those rules.

The best thing about Hedges is that he looks like Dave Grohl.

Should we pitch Bieber and Stix against the Rays given that we might meet them in the WC round?

I think it’s more important to keep them on schedule and ready for games 1 and 2 than to worry about the opponent. I’m sure they’ll come out working on some things and likely won’t go past 5 innings, so they won’t give away much in terms of game plan.

adding to this... the integrity of the game calls for best efforts.. to what end I'll gladly maintain have priorities, the first of which is preparing the Guardians for the post season.. after that.. then we'll see..

I can't wait until he takes the mound in a road playoff game. Should be extremely entertaining.

I was looking up a little info on Sam Hentges and if there was anything notable that changed year-over-year.

Two things stand out:
1. His fastball velo is up (even about 1 MPH from where he was as a reliever last year)
2. He is moving away from his 4-seamer to a 2-seamer. He went from 42% and 9% respectively in 2021 to 32% and 31% in 2022. However recently he's been throwing a lot more sinkers (24% / 39% since beginning of August).

His 4-seamer never was impressive because of the "straightness" (lack of "rising" backspin that gets it by hitters). In this sense he was the anti-Triston and Karinchak, who have fastballs that play up a lot more than what the radar gun says.

FG pitch values have his fastball pitch value at -15.7 in 2021 and +6.6 in 2022. He has gone from throwing meatballs to being a successful fastball pitcher.

Even his 4-seamer is doing better but when you have a higher whiff% on your 2-seamer (15% vs 13% in 2022) it may be a sign to keep throwing it.

The other place where his transformation is showing up is in ground ball% - from 45.8% in 2021 to 61.5% in 2022 which is absurdly high and can probably go even higher if he keeps focused on the 2-seamer (he has a GB% of 72 on his sinker this year).

There's one name that comes to mind; converted starter, lefty, throws hard sinkers from the pen, gets both K's and a ton of groundballs... Zack Britton, who at his prime was one of the most dominant relievers in baseball. Forget the washed up version the Yankees have - do we have our own prime Zack Britton? Maybe.

The Guardians have a "few" (as in not many) potential prospects that might fit this profile.. Here are two.. there are more..

Tim Herrin.. 6'6", 230 # former LHP starter that has been moved to the pen in C-Bus.. His low 90's FB as a starter is playing up in shorter stints. He has a slider/cutter (difficult to tell the difference other than the gun/velo) that couples with his FB.. He has steadily improved his command and control.. more is needed..

Randy LaBaut.. a solid ML pitchers body and strong character traits and the ability to throw strikes and command the baseball..
