The Sixers had one of the worst teams in history for five years in a row. They started G League backcourts and it was so bad that Silver eventually got involved and *suggested* they fire Hinkie. Since then, they've been to exactly zero conference finals and were forced to trade Simmons (a franchise player who couldn't shoot). Meanwhile, the best young player on their roster, who is also their best hope for a Finals appearance before Embiid breaks down, was selected at No. 21 after they stopped tanking.
In fairness, Colangelo tried as hard as possible to be terrible at his job and succeeded. Koby wouldve done much better with that war chest

Well, the Cavs don't have that war chest, I'm not convinced the NBA is going to allow teams to go full process again, they deliberately changed the lottery odds because of it, and we're way too good for it. Honestly, we could trade our entire core, as well as every player with trade value on the roster, tank for half a decade, and end up with a worse team.

Getting Allen for cap space and late first was very lucky and only possible because it was a midseason superstar trade. Getting Garland at No. 5 was very lucky. Getting Mobley at No. 3 was very lucky. The Knicks have been drafting top 10 for the better part of a decade and their best pick is RJ Barrett, a player who probably shouldn't get a max deal but almost certainly will.

I agree. Its bad for the product and with the rule changes its just not possible. With the old lottery odds, Hinkie actually did do the most optimal thing with the hard tank. Nowadays, you are better off doing what OKC does by just hoarding picks and rehabbing/flipping vets like they are houses.

Maybe? At some point you need to start winning or you're a glorified farm team for the rest of the league.

It's hard to recreate Presti's strategy as a whole because somehow he has an eye for knowing that a player isn't done and can be rehabbed to be flipped. I think too often teams don't know if the player is in a bad situation or just plain done, usually it's the latter.

Fedor had this today:

Long term, there’s a guy named LeBron James who may be a free agent next summer -- a time when the Cavs could have an abundance of cap space. LeBron would be hard-pressed to find a better basketball-specific situation if he is looking to leave the Lakers.

The question is whether he's looking for another ring or two or whether he's OK just playing out the last couple of years in LA on a sub-.500 team and not even qualifying for the play-in, like last year. But it's sunny out there and his family surely doesn't want to move back to Cleveland.

But if he said, "Hey, time is running out for me and it's just two years" maybe the fam would sign off on it.

Replace Love with LeBron after this season and they could start sizing the players for rings next summer.

PG Garland, Rubio
SG LeVert, Agbagi (Sexton to free agency)
SF LeBron, Markkanen, Okoro, Stevens
PF Mobley, Markkanen, Wade
C Allen, Lopez

LeVert would be gone as well. We wouldn’t be able to re-sign him unless the Lakers are open to a double S&T for Love/LeBron :chuckle:

I wonder if things aren't going well for the Lakers if they would trade LeBron at the deadline to us just to avoid the pending free agency BS. LeVert and Love for LeBron, the Lakers might flip both Love and LeVert immediately. If the Lakers aren't making the playoffs what's the point in keeping him around to lose him for nothing.

I also think Sexton fits in better than LeVert with LeBron. I think Agbaji might end up starting SG if LeBron comes back and Sexton is a 6th man that can play very well with LeBron at the point when Garland is off the floor.

We'll know pretty soon if LBJ intends to stay in LA.

I dont really want lebron unless he is willing to be a secondary star here

Secondary star to who though? I think Mobley has a higher ceiling as a star than Garland. For me the question is if LeBron would stunt that growth of Mobley or accelerate it. If he is willing to help Mobley really hit his peak potential, thats what I would want him to take a step back for.

In this hypothetical scenario, I would start Garland Agbaji LeBron Markk and Mobley - gives plenty of shooting as well as interior scoring, and bring in Allen Rubio LeVert Okoro Cedi Wade and Stevens from the bench - depending on the match-up.
