2022 Season | Series #15 | Guardians @ Tigers | May 26-29

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'd have started Morgan over Pilkington, especially since the Tigers are hitting 38 points better against lefties. Again, I don't understand what Tito was thinking.

Nice to see Oscar get a couple of hits in his first game. And no strikeouts.

Anybody have any freaking clue why they would pitch to Cabrera? He's by far their best hitter. He came in hitting .343 in his last 10 games. He already had two hits. Putting him on sets up an inning-ending double play possibility and his run means nothing.

WTF was Tito thinking? Take the bat out of Miggy's hands. And then Stephan throws him a pitch up when a fly ball loses the game. If anything you pitch him down and hope he hits a ground ball right at somebody with the infield in.

Just idiotic.
Seems like Tito hasn’t really been “managing” at all this year. A lot of head scratching decisions

I could see not "intentionally" walking him, but throwing nothing but slop hoping he helps you out.. Not a good strategy with a class act bat like Miggy.
The ball he hit to win the game was in the strike zone.

They did try throwing him slop and Stephan bounced a pitch that get away from Maile, putting the winning run on third.

Why? Would Naylor's foul up or Amed's inability to make that play in the hole effected Eli differently? I'm not trying to argue that Pilkington wasn't sharp tonight because he wasn't, but there were other factors in that game and starting Eli, who can't give as many innings as Pilkington might have had worse results.

It's so important for young players to get off to good starts and avoid the pressures of poor performance. Let's hope OGon can keep it going. That double was beautiful.

That's the 2nd start in a row that Pilkington got off to a slow start. I'd be looking to ramp him up a little more prior to him taking the mound.

I thought they would leave Morgan in for the 9th since he had only thrown 35 pitches. In May he's given up 1 earned run in 11 innings.

Why? Because Pilkington has a 5.06 ERA in Columbus and he gave up 7 hits and 4 walks tonight in 3.1 innings. And because the Tigers hit lefties much better than righties.

You're right, he wasn't sharp. I will say this - he gave up a bloop hit and two infield singles along with a weak ground ball single against the shift. They didn't hit him hard other than Schoop's sac fly to deep center. He has potential if he can command his breaking ball better.

Morgan has been lights out recently and he was a starter last year. I'm sure he could gone five innings against a crap team like the Tigers, averaging under three runs per game. Eli can't give as many innings as Pilkington? He could have pitched more than 3.1 innings and with much better results. In fact, he pitched 3.0 innings without allowing a hit or a run.

Was Eli capable of going more than 3 IP after going an inning in relief on Tuesday??
He got thru 3 IP tonight on 35 pitches/ 23 strikes.. That is efficient work...
Instead of leaving him out there longer, Tito went to Trevor Stephan for the 9th....

I don't understand why you would put your focus on such a small window of Konnor's performance. How about his 2.08 ERA or 11.4 SO9 coming into tonight? How about his very good 21 season?

Morgan sure was a starter last year, and he had a 5.34 ERA. He isn't stretched out right now to go more than 40-50 pitches and historically he loses his effectiveness after going through a lineup more than once or twice. I expected him to piggyback with Pilkington, but I expected Pilkington to pitch better than he did tonight. I wholeheartedly agree that he has potential if he can command his pitches better. He's got real good movement on his 2 seam FB that gives hitters trouble. He's a big sturdy kid that has never been injured to my knowledge. I think he's going to be a pretty damn good 4 or 5.

DFA Rosario, I don't care at this point. He's a hyped up Ernie Clement, all weak contact zero anything else, worse defense. But hey, he hustles on outs, great.

He lost the game with his stupid decision to go for 2B on a bloop hit with Jose hitting right behind him. He would have been on 3rd with one out on Jose's Single in a tie game in the 8th inning. That was the game. We need to get rid of him and I don't care if we don't get anything back, just let someone claim him and eat his salary.

At least Chang is gone. At least Reyes is out for a week or so, then hopefully has a minor league rehab for a couple of decades. Rosario is useless. Naylor can’t catch the ball. He CANNOT CATCH THE BASEBALL!!! We have a DH that can’t hit (Reyes) and a first baseman who can’t catch the ball. Anyone see a problem here?

Pitching to Cabrera in the 9th was lunacy. This team drives me nuts…

That 2.08 ERA was due to three scoreless relief appearances where I'm sure Tito brought him in when he had good matchups. In his one previous start he gave up two runs before registering an out.

I'm not down on Pilkington so much as I like Morgan. I think Morgan is a better pitcher at this point than Pilkington and reports are he is stronger and throwing harder than last year. The early returns back this up. Morgan is better and he's right-handed. On paper he was the better choice against this specific team.

In actuality, Morgan retired 9 of the 10 Tigers he faced, hitting the other. Pilkington gave up 7 hits and 4 walks. He retired 10 batters and allowed 11 to reach base.

Yes, Morgan pitched Tuesday. He threw exactly 11 pitches. Prior to that his last appearance was five days before. So he's thrown 11 pitches in the last week.

Right-handed hitters are hitting .268 against Pilkington against .143 for lefties.

The Tigers are hitting .254/.663 against left-handers and .207/.581 against righties. Forget who the pitchers are - I don't get bringing up a lefty from AAA who struggles against right-handed hitters to face Detroit when Morgan had only thrown 11 pitches in the last week.

Also, the Tigers hit lefties much better than righties.

Bieber goes tonight against Alex Faedo in a rematch of last Sunday's game, won 4-2 by the Tigers. Bieber went 7 innings and allowed two earned runs but the G's lost on an unearned run.

Bieber has started eight games this season. He had one very bad start against Toronto where he gave up 7 runs in 3.1 innings. In his other seven starts his ERA is 2.34. Current Tigers players are hitting a combined .144 against Bieber. Robbie Grossman is 4-for-13 with 4 walks against him for a .471 on-base percentage.

Faedo pitched 5.1 innings against the G's on Sunday, allowing 2 runs. His ERA in four starts is 3.00. He's gone 5.0 to 5.2 innings each start. He's a rookie and they're not pushing him too much, yet.

Now that the Guardians have seen Faedo it will be interesting to see if they have more success the second time. He's not overpowering with 14 K's in 21 innings. He's mainly a fly ball pitcher (39 FB's to 27 GB's) and that works playing in a huge ballpark like Comerica, especially when they put Hill in center and Cameron in right. That's a lot of speed out there to run down fly balls. We saw Cameron run down a drive to deep right center by Jose last night where Rick and Matt were thinking it was a triple.

I'd like to see Straw stop hitting fly balls to right field. He has no power to the opposite field and they're playing him shallow. All his bloops are getting caught. With less than one week left in May he's hitting .187 with a .279 OBP - horrible for a leadoff hitter. Heck, it's not good even for a catcher. Pitchers are throwing him high fastballs because they know he can't hurt them hitting the ball in the air.

@Wham with the Right Hand

Morgan didn't start because he isn't stretched out to be a starter, at the moment, you have to consider him a reliever... Morgan showed last season he is very good one time through the lineup, but struggles with the second time. He has a nasty fastball-changeup combo, but hasn't shown a great third pitch. Morgan is in his best role right now. If you don't like him being a reliever, then oh well, cause that's how they are using him and that's why Pilk got the start.

We also will face some lumps this season, we are using a bunch of rookies/unprovens so expect to see a Pilk type in times we don't wanna see them. Also don't always look at minor league ERAs since they don't tell you if they are working on something or not.

DFA Rosario, I don't care at this point. He's a hyped up Ernie Clement, all weak contact zero anything else, worse defense. But hey, he hustles on outs, great.

Tell me who on the roster is hitting better than Amed right now... I think we need to move on from him as well, but who do we have to replace him?
