Quick observations from the game--
- Good news: This offense should be explosive when Watson returns..
- Bad news: This offense has Brissett for the next 10 games..
- Stefanski knows how to scheme players open and it was the case for most of the game.. I do think moving forward some more slants, screens, and quick rhythm passes to get Brissett going would help... The passing game seemed slow developing and out of sync, which could be because of Watson taking most reps with the 1s all camp, and Brissett having little actual time with the starting lineup..
- Brissett did just enough to help the Browns win the game but if he could have done more earlier, the game could have been put away much sooner... Brissett didn't make any mistakes and only took one sack, but he failed to convert on some key downfield shots... Hit one or two of those and the Browns score 30+ easily.. He was 2/7 on throws 10+ on outside right and outside left but interestingly enough was 4/6 between the numbers.. You have to hit on a few of those to keep the defense honest but also chunk plays are a huuuge indicator of offensive success..
- In watching the game, I thought Stefanski should have called some more bootlegs and play action to get the defense moving and Brissett more in a rhythm.. However, Brissett fared poorly on PA passes going only 1/5 as opposed to 17/29 with no play action..
- Chubb looked like he was at a different speed on Sunday.. I don't ever remember him being that explosive.. But, him and Hunt were both fully rested and healthy compared to being banged up for most of the year last year..
- I really think DPJ can be a very solid #2 receiver moving forward.. He consistently makes tough catches and produces when the ball is thrown his way.. Credit to Schwartz for finding a way to be productive as well.. Hopefully he can build off this momentum..
- The defense looked really stout most of the game.. The frustrating part was 3-4 chunk plays (Baker TD, late sub that lead to 50 yard pass gain and the botched fumble McCaffrey run), largely based off of blown coverages/mistakes, led to the Panthers scoring drives.. Otherwise, the run game had nothing going and the pass game got nothing easy..
- Props to Emerson for stepping up Week 1 and filling in for Greedy... I really like the physicality that he plays with..
- I am a bit surprised the starting defensive line played so much and they didn't rotate the interior defensive line much at all.. The Browns built up their depth on the edges to keep Garrett and Clowney fresh.. The fact that Winovich didn't see the field and Rochell got a few snaps leads me to believe Winovich may still be battling an injury... I also don't need to see Taven Bryan play as many snaps as Garrett and Clowney..
- I really can't fathom why Felton has the yips when fielding punts.. He just doesn't seem to have any confidence back there and I'm not sure you wait for him to cost you a possession before taking him out..
- God I love Cade York..
