2022 Season - Week #2 - Jets @ Browns - 9/18 1pm CBS

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
So, you're familiar with what a quarters concept looks like--right? The deep part of the field is divided up into 4 zones (in the same way Cover 2 divides it up into 2 zones).

Sorry if that sounds condescending. That's not my intention. Not sure how else to word it.

It's hard to guess because of how badly Ward plays this, but I believe it's cover 4, with 23, 43, 22 and 21 playing the 4 deep zones, while 38, 5 and 28 are responsible for the underneath coverage. We rush 4 and drop 7.

I think that, counting from left to right (from the offense's POV) that Delpit is responsible for the third zone, while Ward is responsible for the fourth zone.

There are only 3 receivers reaching the second level. As #17 runs a deep post that crosses over into Delpit's zone, Delpit correctly carries him with underneath leverage. There is nothing else for JJ3 to do, so that receiver gets double-teamed.

If JJ3 drops off of that man, it's a potential TD over the top for a good receiver/QB duo. I'm not sure Delpit has the speed to close on NFL receivers if he lets them get over top of him.

But that's all besides the point--because Denzel Ward just sits down in an empty zone and leaves Corey Davis wide open. Either Ward got the play wrong, or he assumed Davis ran an out route and is sitting right behind him--and Ward could bait Flacco into an interception by playing underneath.

Yeah like I get what quarters is conceptually, I'm just hard pressed to give Delpit a pass either way because rewatching it, it sure seems like he's immediately manipulated by Flacco's eyes. I am absolutely not a coverage expert, but Delpit appears to be trying to read Flacco's eyes to make a big play over maintaining his deep quarter. He starts to bite down well before Walker actually ever even releases the left slot and well before he could have possibly known the left slot was even going to be running a deep post out of Johnson's quarter and into his quarter.

The play starts with Johnson and Delpit both standing on the Jets 49 yard line. Johnson instantly backpedals 9 yards to the Browns 41. Delpit doesn't backpedal at all and actually takes a stride to the right towards Johnson's quarter. Maybe I'm not understanding the responsibilities, but I just don't understand why he would do either one of these things.

If Delpit had given as much ground as Johnson gave at the snap, it certainly seems like he would have at least had a chance to make a play going backwards on 84 while still being able to come forward on 17.

Here's my problem with this...

Even if Delpit is in the exact right spot, the decision conceptually to have Ward give a guy a free release down the sidelines to be 1 on 1 with a fucking safety is fucking trash.

If your best coverage man is being schemed to defend for 10 yards and then release guys to second level defenders, that's a bad scheme.

Because ultimately what's the best case there for Ward? He's now available to help make a tackle on JOK's man? It's garbage.

My biggest problem with this scheme is that we play our Corners too soft. I sit at about the 25 yard line. I promise that we are giving guys a 7 yard cushion 90% of the time and it's inexcusable too m with the likes of Ward, Newsome, and Emerson.

I mean theoretically the Browns could have kneeled it to 2:00, kneeled it on 2nd to run it down to 1:15 or so, kneeled it on 3rd to run it to 0:30 or so and then kicked a FG to go up 10 with about 25 seconds left - but ultimately I don't have much issue running a play there since field goals aren't guaranteed, even short ones, considering York missed an XP.

This wouldn't have happened though because NYJ still had 1 timeout left after the 2 minute warning.

They did not.

The Jets called timeouts with 2:27, 2:22 and 2:09 to go.

The Browns faced 2nd and 6 with 2:09 to go and the Jets having no timeouts. Hunt ran for 11 and got pushed out of bounds with 2:02 to go.

Then on 1st and 10 with 2:02 to go and the clock stopped, Chubb scored with 1:55 to go.

It's different because defense by nature is a far more reactionary than offense.

Defense is very much a "if they do this, we do this it" operation which makes knowing your exact assignment far more critical.

I get that, and I understand folks saying we should run a different scheme. I just expect players to know their assignments and to execute them properly.

I missed the live game and I'm glad. I just watched the replay without knowing the outcome and I'm sad. We wasted a great game by Chubb with bad defense.

And the margin of loss was a missed extra point. Ouch.

Woohoo. I'm always worried about the Browns being the Browns, and boom - they proved they will never change. I know it's not wise to give them my Sundays but I let it happen because I always think this year will be different. I'm sick of being a sucker, not gonna lie. Can't believe i let myself get my hopes up.

I just hope we don't get embarrassed on Thursday like usual.

We give huge cushions that get us beat underneath for first downs all game. If that translated into an effective "bend don't break" then I might not like it but I could live with it. But then we still get beat deep regularly on failure to properly pass off coverages or whatever. What ever happened to having someone stay deeper than the deepest receiver? Isn't that one of the most basic fundamentals of coverage? Apparently not in a Joe Woods scheme?
