2023 Guardians Spring Training Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Yes. I think you have the years wrong.

We bought out three arb years (24, 25, 26)

We earned 4 free agent years (27, 28, 29, 30)

And a club option for a fifth free agent year (31)

With the way contracts keep going up over time, if Gimenez maintains his production, I wouldn't be shocked to see his market value heading into that 2027 Unrestricted Free Agency being easily over 20M annually.

I was just stuck in the car all day yesterday, so I was getting confused with my son telling me the details. Yet, I think there are still some discrepancies ... like yours better (from Passan via ESPN). And, I do think his value was at least $20-25 million (but brought up Tatis and his $25.5 million) which made sense when I did 2030 as option year. But, I was going off of ...

MLBTR - The Guardians previously had control over Giménez for the next four years, meaning that this deal buys out three free agent years and potentially a fourth with the option.

Hoynes - The contract buys all three of Gimenez’s arbitration years and three of his free agent years.

Spotrac - shows club option in 2030

Mandy Bell (MLB) - The deal, which will begin in 2023, is for seven years and worth $106.5 million, with a $23 million club option for an eighth year. (which will be 2030 per my math)

So 1/2 sources are wrong ... like club option in 2031 but think the confusion was when it starts (2023 is probably signing bonus plus original $700,000 or so and thus people at first skipped over it when hearing the years).

If folks think that losing TMac for several months is a big deal for the MLB team, why would they think that trading away Bieber for future prospects would not be a big deal for the MLB team?

**********

Brantley Kd less than he walked in the minors. His K rate was 8.7%. His walk rate was 11.8%.

Brennans K rate was 12.3%...walk rate 9.2.

Brennan isn't in the same stratosphere.

I like Brennan, but he's not gonna be a Brantley.

Brennan does have more power than Brantley did, but Brantley was generally two years younger.

At age 24 in MLB, Brantley had an XBH 7% of his PAs. At age 24 across three levels, Brennan had an XBH 7.8% of his PAs.

thats why we, at the same time, trade everybody for one year of shohei.

Yep, it's hard to tell.

I'm hoping Passan is right.

I don't understand the Brantley comparisons really... a LOT of insane development would have to go right in order for that to happen. Brantley combined patience with god-tier bat-to-ball skills in a way that matches Kwan and not Brennan. Brennan lags in both those areas by a significant degree. Who knows if he can reach them but it would be very wise to bet against it because it's not likely that he'll start doing it at age 24 when Kwan has been doing it throughout his minor league career and Brantley did it since his age 22 callup in 2009. It's mainly that his quality of contact improved over time but the raw skills were always there (see: O-Swing aka Chase Rate and all kinds of Contact% stats). And the sample is high enough when one group of players is chasing 20% of balls and one is chasing 50% of balls, lol... And one is swinging and missing at less than 10% of swings and one at double that.

Brennan has a ceiling of a Michael Brantley with a stronger fielding... That much is true and his style of play makes his floor a solid 4th OF/Platoon type of player.

Brennan is going to be a solid 4th OF/platoon type at the bare minimum in my mind...

So now the question mark in my mind, will Straw hit near 100 OPS while keeping up his defensive prowess? Can Brennan show he is a plus OF defensively, not just in the corners but in CF as well?

For 23, Straw is the CF and Brennan plays all three spots.... Let's see how he handles his time in 23...

Brantley was called up at 22 ona team that didn't have OF production... Brennan at that age wasn't playing since he was just drafted the year before...

Brennan' upside is Brantley, compare numbers between those two and Brennan contact skill/bat control skill is actually really good, plus he has been known for taking walks and being patient at the plate. He has a better ceiling than Kwan...

You're missing the point. Brantley was putting up the numbers that would define him as a hitter at age 22, while Brennan, even at age 24-25, is doing something way different.

"Really good" sure but not god-tier. That's the difference between Brantley/Kwan and Brennan. All this talk about ceilings is always just kind of funny to me because if they're not going to reach this "ceiling" it just becomes a matter of comparing the intensity of your dreams about a certain player's success.

"Yeah I had a vision where I saw that Straw turned into Mike Trout!"
"Yeah? Well I saw Rocchio as Lindor."
"Rocchio will never reach that, I prefer Gabriel 'Correa' Arias."

Brennan now, is someone who relies on really good bat-to-ball skills to try to get the bat to the ball wherever its thrown, as he uses an extremely aggressive approach at the plate.

Could somebody catch me up?
Have we cleared roster spots for our catching trio?

No we haven't yet... I have been waiting myself for the news.

All we know is Gaddis is now in the rotation and Curry is taking his bullpen spot. Plus Gimenez got his contract extension and Stephan is very likely to get one as well...

We shall see in a couple seasons, but I think Brennan can reach Brantleys level of play...

My guesses:

1. Morris to 60 IL
2. Trade one of Palacios, Lavastida, Tena, most likely Richie
3. Waiver claim or small trade for a hitter who takes Viloria's bench spot
