2023 Guardians Spring Training Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Your quote: Remind them of Kluber and how we were lucky to get anything for him at all.

Really? Why is that exactly? Were you serious?
I'm sorry, I thought you were disengaged? In all seriousness, you need to go back and reread my previous posts. I'm not hating the FO for not trading Bieber yet, and I clearly explained how I understand others desire to keep him. I have an opinion and it's nothing more than that. I haven't badmouthed anyone for having a opposing opinion.

We were lucky to get anything at all for Kluber because he had exactly 1 yr of control remaining after a season where he went 2-3 with a ERA over 5 due to injuries. The year prior he was 20-7 and it was pretty obvious that we had already witnessed the best of him. I know hindsight is 20/20, but there are lessons to be learned by looking back. Maybe Shane will surprise all of us and accept a team friendly deal to stay in Cleveland. That would be awesome, but how likely do you think that is? The difference here is how we see the "window" and I have no problem with anyone that thinks they should put all the chips in now even if I don't agree. I just happen to believe dealing Bieber now would greatly increase our chances of assembling a WS contender going forward. I'm not even certain how it hurts our chances now because like Kluber, I think we've already seen the best of Bieber.

Brennan does not have a weaker arm or less raw power... Brennan was a pitcher in college for heavens sake. He definitely has the better arm...
Re-read my post. All these were Kwan relative to Brennan. Kwan has a weaker arm and less raw power.

Getting on base is a result, not a skill, and right now Brennan isn't showing the skills to get on base NEARLY as much as Kwan. Nobody here has underestimated Brennan's bat to ball skills, we've all said he has really good skills there. They just aren't the elite savant level skills possessed by Kwan and Brantley.

And maybe Kwan isn't going to get much better than he is now, but Brennan has to get a lot better than he is now just to reach Kwan. I'd give you even money that Brennan never reaches what Kwan is now. Not because I don't think he has some potential but just because I see where he is at now.

Kwan compared to Brennan is:
Better bat-to-ball
Better approach
I'll just give them a draw on fielding but I believe Kwan is better
Faster foot speed
Weaker throwing arm
Less raw power (game power I'm not sure about)

Add that all up and it's pretty obvious where things stand and why it will be hard for Brennan to ever reach Kwan.
Let's see here:
Kwan in Cleveland- 298/373/438/818
Brennan in Cleveland- 357/400/500/900

Kwan in the minors- 301/380/438/818
Brennan in the minors- 296/367/435/801

I don't care if Brennan shares similarities/qualities with Kwan, Brantley or neither. All I know is the fuckin' kid can hit and has been doing so since prior to turning pro which is why they selected him. If you want to talk about guys that can't hit there are a couple of others worthy of the conversation, but Will isn't one of them.

Edited to add that we are blessed to have both of them.

And thus the reason that Brennan needs to start a minimum...a bare minimum.... of 81 games this season.

Anyone else surprised the final roster moves have not been finalized & announced yet??
I figured that 9 pm on Weds would have the final details in place so all parties are ready/ in place for the opening pitch on Thursday..

Hoynes says the Guardians have reached a deal with Trevor Stephan.

But he worded it in a weird way. 4-year extension with 2 club options.

I don't know if he means years 3 and 4 are are club options or if it's 4 years and then 2 club options for years 5 and 6.

It is 4 years with two club options.

That.... doesn't clarify anything at all.

Is it 4 guaranteed years PLUS two more club option years?

Or is it 4 years total, two of which are club option years? :chuckle:

I believe it's 4 guaranteed years and 2 more club option years on top of that.

The Guardians had him under team control for 4 more years (1 year pre arb, 3 years arb) so it makes sense that the two option years would be for after that.

His age 27, 28, 29, 30 seasons and then his age 31 and 32 seasons if the Guardians want it.

this is correct...

@CDAV45 There are several dozen Bieber trades posted at BTV.. the most by any one poster = Sportscoach that still surpass any 3 other Guardian Fan posters... The latest one is by you know who.. has Sandoval and Rengifo along with their prospect catcher Quero and Ky Bush... which is a good deal...

NOT ALL GOOD DEALS HAPPEN..

W/R to the Outfield situation.. the most likely candidate to lose defensive playing time for the Guardians will be SpongeBob.. imho, it most likely will be due to the emergence of George Valera... Kwan (who added good weight over the winter), Straw (who stepped it up in September/October and had a great spring training, Spongebob who doubled his hits in the last ten days or so of spring training and now appears poised to resume what he did last year.. & Brennan who is perhaps the most well rounded outfielder of the group makes these players a solid quartet of OF'ers.. There are many worse situations..

...none as bad as our catching situation, btw & imho...
