2023 Minor League Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Honestly, he (Rocchio) is forcing something to happen... In some ways I am surprised he hasn't gotten some OF reps. Anything to get him into the lineup is my mind.
Remember:
1) the super 2 line seems to float between early & mid June (2nd thru 19th). Like it or not that does play into the equation/ thought process.
2) Rocchio's own ability to play SS has played into the equation for others like Arias & Freeman to play at other spots like OF. Rocchio is superior defensively to Freeman at SS and is ahead defensively to Arias in many aspects (the biggest exception is throwing arm strength where Arias is ahead of everyone).

This was in CBSSports yesterday on a prospect (interesting stat) watch list ..

4C Jhonkensy Noel: That's "4C," as in "four corners." Noel has primarily played right field this season, but he has experience at both infield corners and in left field, too. (That isn't to say you'd want him at third base, mind you.) He hasn't played well this season overall, posting a .727 OPS in his first 31 games. We're highlighting him anyway because he's only 21 years old and he has immense raw power. Need evidence? Consider that more than 70% of his batted balls against lefties this season have had an exit velocity of 95 mph or better. If he can improve his approach and/or make more consistent contact (neither a given) he could serve as an intriguing platoon piece.

I just feel like they need to find a way, outside of C, to get their best hitters up in the bigs. We cannot sit here and keep losing one run games because we don't have enough offense. Rocchio doesn't seem like he had much left to prove at AAA...

I agree but if they are not playing Freeman who was hitting just as well as Rocchio, why would they play Rocchio when Tito keeps on saying you got to plug in the players you believe in? As Tito says, sometimes they play through it (slump) and sometimes they don't. If Rocchio is the SS of the future, they are not just going to willy-nilly change him. He is better long-term honing his SS/2B skills in AAA than riding the pine like Freeman as Tito plays Rosario who is too valuable to trade per you. I rather see Rocchio up at SS and throw Rosario at DH vs LHP and if he wants to play, he has more time in the OF than Rocchio; therefore, switch him to OF/RF (better arm too maybe).

If I see Rocchio in the outfield because Amed Rosario is our major league shortstop, I'm going to stop joking about placing bear traps in front of Amed's locker.

The entire front office and coaching staff should be flogged if that were to happen.

(Hint: It won't happen)

I mean there is truth to your words, but if that gets Rocchio playing everyday then so be it!

It's bad enough they're moving Arias and Freeman around. I'm starting to doubt their versatility concept in the minors, because it seems to produce no strong defenders at a particular position, but instead mostly only Utility INF. Maybe this is something they should re-think in their development plans. You reap what you sow.

It depends upon how you define 'year'.

If by year, you mean the first 40 games, no offensive regular is matching expectations.

But a year lasts longer than 40 games, and there is a long way to go.

Like Thome used to say after a cold start...

'Get back to me at the end of the season.'

(The same applies to hot starts.)

********

Rocchio has hit safely in 32 out of 35 games, with multi hits in eleven of them.

He hasn't done much damage vs LHers, but hasn't been a disaster....333 OBP.

Two other things stand out.

1) With 2 out and RISP....379/.884.
2) Every pitcher he has faced has been older than him.

Thanks CATS, I didn’t realize a “year” isn’t just the first 40 games. Geez…
